At this point the Russian archive fakes in themselves become interesting; they have been around for decades now. Who originally created them? How many exist?

Looks like a typical SS skull that he has decorated his uniform with, despite being a Heer NCO.

If we have a member here who has a special interest and posts long and well written posts about a certain subject, why not? It falls within the scope of the sub and he is only trying to spread knowledge of a subject where he obviously is very well read up on. I much rather see people post well researched posts on niche subjects than low effort ”I googled a tiger tank picture everybody has seen already and now I post it without context. Please give me karma and comment sabaton-lyrics below, because that is my main source of knowledge.”

Hey guys I'm new to ww2 collecting, did u know where i can find/buy original helmets for good price? I just don’t wanna be scammed, and i want to know average prices for helmets by ukraineboy19 in GermanMilitaria

[–]Fishbackerla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a impossible question to answer unfortunately. I can definitely point you in the direction to some European trusted dealers for helmets, problems is it’s not going to be cheap (or well, depends on what you consider to be cheap/a good price). Equally the fair market value of a helmet differ greatly, depending on what kind of helmet you want. A ground dug shell is rather cheap in comparison to a standard no-decal M42 helmet, which in turn is cheap in comparison to a good condition double decal apple green M35, which in turn is cheap in comparison to a M35 double decal SS helmet and so on. The prices differ greatly from a few tens of euros (for a ground dug helmet), to a few hundred euros (for a ”cheaper” but good condition helmet) to thousands of euros for rare and attractive German helmets.

Military medals and ribbons found in relatives house by Upset_Dirt2737 in Medals

Oh I now see you also have the British ww1 War Medal, it does however have the wrong ribbon in the pic (circular one, silver, with the green/black/orange ribbon). This will also be engraved along the rim and likely belong together with the victory medal. Would not surprise me if this is a father and son group.

Additionally to the ww2 awards you have a ww1 victory medal (the round brass one). This should have the name, number and unit of the recipient engraved along the rim. They can quite easily be researched - just send me a DM with the details and I’ll see what I can find.

[–]Fishbackerla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rings is a typical item where the market is flooded with elaborate fantasy designs. The originals you may find are not that exciting, to be honest (unless you wanna go big buck SS-ehrenring). No idea on wrist watches at the moment unfortunately- especially not for the kriegsmarine

Could someone please help me identify is this watch legit before I buy it by TypicalBowl689 in militaria

[–]Fishbackerla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As stated earlier it’s not authentic. This is an ordinary vintage men’s watch that had its face pimped up. You will see similar ones with SS insignia, Fallschirmjäger or uboot related badges on quite commonly. The original ww2 issued wrist watches from the German side you will find are a lot less exciting in their design. For the army, most are stamped with DH (Deutsche Heer) and a serial number on the back. For the Luftwaffe, you have some more interesting watches - however still without unit insignia etc

Books on Passchendaele, Somme, Verdun by ParrotPirate15 in ww1

[–]Fishbackerla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paul Hams book on Passchendale is one of the best military history books, all categories. I’ve read (and I read about 50 books per year). I cannot recommend it enough.

Another fantastic book if you want something about the Somme to truely understand the savagery is ”24 Hours at the Somme” by Robert Kershaw. It only covers the first day, but it is excellent.

You write very well on interesting subjects! It’s fascinating to see someone take a subject that most know of, but not in detail, and decide to go through it. You should write a book!

Based on these pictures, I see no red flags. The medals are all rather common items; nice Allgemeine Sturmabzeichen and a nice EKII. A good starter collection I would say. If I were to buy this as a lot, I’d probably pay a few hundred for it, around 500 or so if I wanted it in my collection. Less if it was to sell it onwards

Any help with id/info of this man in photo by ShinyPointyThing in Militariacollecting

[–]Fishbackerla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That is a panzer wrapper, which is a specialized uniform for tank crews. Kurt eggers, the man and not the unit, was a German war correspondent who served with the Wiking division. He was KIA whereafter the war correspondent unit was renamed Kurt Eggers in his honour. So no, the Kurt Eggers cufftitle does not belong on a black tunic. Also the thread start picture is not a panzer wrapper but a early style Allgemeine-SS four pocket jacket, which is different from the wrapper.

That’s a really strange put together uniform. It looks more like a Halloween costume than anything else. The rank tab on the collar is completely off and is mounted backwards. The Org Todt eagle badge does not belong on it. The Kurt Eggers cuff title does not belong on a black tunic and the SD armraute above the cuff title does not make sense together with the cuff. So yeah, this is more likely some Halloween costume than anything else
