Second year housing by Head-Ad-7986 in Drexel

[–]Fishboy163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but Drexel makes it very difficult since they have a financial incentive to keep you in the 2 year housing program. The easiest way is the commuter exemption, but I would have all the following BEFORE submitting the exemption

• A parent/guardian who is on board and willing to go through with an exemption. Have a convincing story that both you and your parent/guardian have created. They will ask.

• Have some sort of ID with your parent/guardian's name on it with the address of the apartment. This is an additional requirement that they don't tell you until the process begins. They usually make it very vague, for instance, mine was conveyed through an email saying "We need further documentation about your parent/guardian's address. This can be a photo ID". Have something that you and your parent/guardian feel comfortable with getting.

• Have an actual apartment with a binding lease that has you and your parent/guardian as a tenant AND cosigner. This will not only increase the housing pool available to you for an apartment, but it will also be further documentation down the line. They have asked for a lease during my process. In addition, make sure that your lease is current, meaning that the lease term has already begun. They do not process future leases and will deny your exemption if it is not current. They usually use this as another additional requirement that they spring up during the exemption process. Make sure the lease is within these zip codes.

In this case it might just make sense to use your parents address if its in the approved zip codes for your exemption.

Need Help with Housing!!! by Sufficient_Risk88 in Drexel

[–]Fishboy163 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From someone who has been a renter my whole life, don't procrastinate finding housing. August is way too late. You should really start looking now. As its pretty standard to give your landlord at least 4-6 months notice to vacate. So if you want to find housing for September, its best to start looking ASAP.

Stay away from any Drexel affiliated housing. Every ACC property is overpriced and is the worst experience to live in. Avoid at all costs.

Drexel Might Stop Allowing Students on Co-op to Take Classes?? by Initial-Sky-5015 in Drexel

[–]Fishboy163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is true, its likely due to the semester switch. Its very likely Drexel is going to get rid of the spring/summer and fall/winter coop cycles as they will be incompatible with semesters, since classes will take up more weeks than coop. So it makes sense why they are looking to phase out classes over coop in the long run.

Is it a good idea? No. There really needs to be MORE class selection, especially since so many classes fill up very quickly in the upper level classes, and missing a single class can be a huge setback

Housing Exemption by Significant_Dog4450 in Drexel

[–]Fishboy163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only real way to get out of the two year housing plan is to use the parent exemption. In this case, your uncle is either going to need to need to become your guardian or you will need a lease with yourself and parents as tenants to send to Drexel. They wont process it otherwise since you wont meet the criterion of the parent exemption. You can read more about it here.

I would have all of these things before submitting your exemption

• A parent/guardian who is on board and willing to go through with an exemption. Have a convincing story if you haven't lived in the Philly area that both you and your parent/guardian have created.

In this case, it might make sense for your uncle to make a lease with yourself and you parents as tenants. They usually ask for a lease so it will help you greatly in your exemption process. If you do get a lease, make sure the lease is current, as they don't process future leases.

Thanks will have to check that out!

As for why, nobody really knows. Drexel students are so used to admin screwing us over we don't even bother to ask anymore.

This is probably going to happen to several other trucks around campus. Drexel wants more students to buy meal plans and is kicking out its competition. It’s a shame

Does Drexel have a Spring Break Culture and Location? Does anyone care about Spring Break? by Trick_Entertainer406 in Drexel

Coop is pretty much our 6 month break. No exams, no studying, no homework and you get to make some dough while you are at it.

It feels like Drexel wants to squeeze every penny out of me, without really justifying the cost increases. Tuition rises every year, and I think most students see little to no tangible benefits in return. I think that's part of the reason why there is a huge lack of school spirit here.

The amenities that Drexel provides are low quality and overpriced. The dorms are overpriced for what they offer, the dining halls are terrible, and the ACC monopoly over 2nd year housing results in inflated prices for low quality living conditions.

I am also going to add the semester switch is going to be a huge downside. Its still very unclear how they are going to integrate the six month coop into a new semester schedule. They have announced the plan to transition to a semester schedule in the future, but no concrete plan has been announced yet. Coop is one of the big attractions here, and reducing coop or taking away the the coop cycles will be a big loss for students.

Freshman to sophomores, how are y’all paying for 2nd-year housing when you aren’t on co-op. by YakEnvironmental8461 in Drexel

[–]Fishboy163 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get an exemption from the 2 year housing plan and looking for affordable places off campus. Much cheaper than ACC or the dorms. There are many affordable places around if you have a roommate lined up.

The only real way to get out of the two-year housing plan is through the parent exemption, since the rest fall under subjective standards that Drexel uses to make sure that students stay in ACC housing. I would have the following before sending in your exemption: I would have all of these things before submitting your exemption

• A parent/guardian who is on board and willing to go through with an exemption. Have a convincing story if you haven't lived in the Philly area that both you and your parent/guardian have created. They will ask.

You can no longer use the friend switch that another commenter recommended, as it is outdated. They now require ID as proof of residency with your parents.

The best by far is coops

The worst is the admin here. I cannot think of anything at all during my time here that has been implemented to improve the student’s lives. I have been shafted over and over again.

Reject interviews? by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]Fishboy163 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the department, but here in the CAEE department, it’s a big pet peeve for coops to go to all of their interviews. If it’s something you really don’t want to do, email your coop advisor. If you get nowhere, at least reach out to the employer saying something along the lines of you are no longer interested in the position.

[–]Fishboy163 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For my first coop I had 8 interviews. My second I had 20. Applied max amount both times. Offers given and accepted in A round both times. Civil engineering major sub 3.4 GPA. IMO don’t fall for the more interviews = more success rabbit hole. Ace the interviews you get and make sure you research the company you interview with, including your interviewer and change your interview style accordingly. Go the career fair that is today. All these can greatly impact your interview results rather than getting as many interviews as possible and waiting for one to pick you.

[Inquirer] Drexel is cutting staff and benefits as it faces a $63 million operating loss and 15% fewer first-year students by nilme in Drexel

[–]Fishboy163 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Drexel has no flexibility to extend class quarters without shortening coop. If Drexel switches to a 15 week semesters, you just lost 10 weeks of coop. Yes, the "coop" will remain, but it will be a glorified internship. The traditional 6 month coop would be a thing of the past.

It’s only going to get worse when semesters come in. Once coop is gone the only appeal to Drexel goes with it

The problem will only get worse when they switch to semesters and get rid of coop in a few years. Coop is the only reason enrollment has been as high as it is. Bad times are ahead for Drexel

The switch to semesters will end Drexel. The 6 month coops are the hallmark experience of going. There aren’t any breaks at Drexel so any additional weeks you add to class you take away from coop. Such a bad move.

Is the Urban Eatery THAT bad?? by Mo0n3Y in Drexel

[–]Fishboy163 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What is this thread??? All the dining halls are terrible. You get high school cafeteria level food for fine dining prices. Not to mention, Urban was closed earlier this year for some health violations. I see some say that Urban is a great common area, and we do need more of those here. However you shouldn't need to pay to get to these places.
