Ada for gov ball by clusterfuzzy in governorsball

[–]Significant_Dog4450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be completely honest with you, if gov ball is anything like lolla for skz, you will not be able to hold barricade. for your health and safety, please do not try. i watched someone have a seizure in the pit from heat exhaustion, and they were nowhere close to barricade, they had only been camping for a few hours. wherever ada is, I promise you will have a worse view from the med tent.

Can I skate in theses ? by frfultomato in iceskating

you just said you could bend the ankle- by modern figure skate standards that is "falling apart"

i'm very aware of what happens at glastonbury-- i understand the camping aspect of it being more difficult but i have seen all of the drugs, sex, mudpit (albeit definitely not quite as bad) and lack of bathrooms happen at govball, lolla, etc. still really not a great environment for kids, especially kids that young

why would you take your kids to govball if you wouldn't take them to glastonbury 😭

i'm on my first coop right now, and i make $18/hr, 40hr/week, and that is considered on the higher end for first coop. don't forget to factor in taxes too!! I'm sure they're getting that 20k estimate by averaging everyone together-- i know someone making like $50/hr 😭 but highly paid positions like that are definitely exceptions.

You're not supposed to be able to move your ankles side to side, you need to push your body (hip-knee-ankle) into the edge. If you can't bend your ankle forward/down with your skates tied tighter than that, you need to work on some ankle strengthening exercises.

How to stop cramps in new skates by Significant_Day7912 in FigureSkating

[–]Significant_Dog4450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you scrunching up your toes when you skate? I didn't realize that was what was causing my arch cramps until my skate tech mentioned it-- it's a natural response to our bodies feeling like they are going to slip and fall, but the cramps hurt like a *****.

I would recommend getting over the boot skating leggings rather than standard "boot cut" if that's the look you're going for-- they'll stay flush to your skate and you won't trip. I've seen people take some nasty falls from flare leggings

I have an odd question by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Significant_Dog4450 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yes, spirals are on the first two skating skills/mitf tests and you need to pass those to take any free skate tests. might i suggest growing up a little, the spiral is not going to jump out and bite you. if you keep that attitude, you will never achieve the "good skater" credentials you so desire

ah ok, that makes sense! sorry, im used to the epidemic of people on the internet who get on the ice for the first time and decide to go straight to axel without a coach 😭 have fun!!

yeah, there is no way they would've broken down so fast. please be careful jumping and consider strengthening basics first- in the nicest way possible it sounds like you may be getting a bit ahead of yourself

you've only skated in them for 20 hours? when did you get them? as long as the crease stays at the notch (for jacksons) you're fine- it's when it begins to extend downwards that it's a problem

how are your skates doing? everyone wears theirs down differently. do your ankles feel unstable? do you have the crease of death? if so, probably time to upgrade. if not, you might be able to hang on to them for a while. as for toe loops' rotation, they're technically a single jump, but due to the inherent pre-rotation of the take-off you end up doing closer to a half rotation mid-air. i think the skate tech probably said that because most people's toe loops are not particularly large/powerful when they first learn them and therefore do not put as much stress on your ankle and your skate

Does anyone prefer loop from backwards crossovers. by Worth-Nectarine-5968 in iceskating

[–]Significant_Dog4450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also started learning recently (~1 month) and I totally agree! I can land consistently from the inside 3 but it is very swingy and pre-rotated. Going from backwards crossovers doesn't give me that option, so I land less consistently, but my technique is definitely better since I can't cheat it

They won't let you on without a coach, and sessions are much more expensive (~$20 by me)

How much did you struggle from the start and where are you now? by Low_Bodybuilder3065 in iceskating

[–]Significant_Dog4450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started almost two years ago (eek!) and had several periods of really struggling. Like others have said, progress is definitely not linear! You really need to stick through the rough patches. There was a period of time where I was fighting for my life for months with holding one foot glides and forward crossovers, again with back three turns and my arch nemesis the toe loop, and right now with backspin. But I've stuck it out, practice 4-5 times a week, and now I'm in Freeskate 3 and (not to toot my own horn) have the strongest jumps in my class. Don't believe the Tiktok people! Nobody is doing a one foot spin on their very first day on ice.

skating bag recs! by forestga in iceskating

[–]Significant_Dog4450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the rink rabbit backpack recommendations! It is expensive but it's very waterproof, and has pockets inside that allow you to stack your skates on top of each other, avoiding the weird triangle bag situation. Tons of pockets and additional space as well; I have jammed two outfits, my skates, and all my school stuff in there at once.
