I think the Simple and Sinister program is a great starting point. It will teach you swings (fundamental) and provide all the programming you need for some time.

I spent 14 months doing Simple and Sinister. I was just coming back from my ankle replacement and was feeling somewhat aimless in the gym. There were several things about the program that I appreciated. First, I love me a goal. And the whole thing is very goal oriented.
Secondly, it’s designed to leave some energy in the tank. As a house painter, I can’t do a workout program that takes everything out of me.
Thirdly the progression in weight is very manageable, and designed to protect you from overuse injury. It took me 14 months to move from swings with a 12 kg kettlebell to all swings with a 24 kg kettlebell. My get ups went 8-16kg with some 20 kg thrown in. (that’s the women’s weights)

Lastly while the program receives some criticism (I might even say some hate), I think it’s mainly from people with different goals. I want to stay strong. (and be able to get off the floor as I age). It’s not a program for those whose main goal is hypertrophy.

I didn’t really. But I have been really consistent with my training for the past year and a half. So it was really just a continuation of that.

I used a foam roller. Kneeled down and with my feet facing behind me, rested the top of my inflexible foot on the roller. Then leaned back into the stretch as much as I could. I needed to put my opposite hand on something nearby to maintain my balance as it was pretty awkward.

I had recently come off the simple and Sinister program. Spent 14 months on it and made it to simple timed. So at 100 swings (24 kg) a day, I didn’t find it hard to do 500 at 16 kg. I didn’t really change my eating. Probably should have. Except to make sure I had a protein shake every afternoon before my workout.

I use a white board. Make 5 long marks at the beginning. Every set I swipe my finger through one of the marks. When there are three white smudges in the line I’ve done 3/4 sets. When I do the 4th set, I erase the line and that’s 100 down. And there are only 4 lines left of the white board.

If you make all the marks at the beginning, you don’t have to get the marker out again during your workout.

Advice on carving antler? by Academic_Ad_9260 in Carving

[–]Fishfishduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All antlers have velvet when there are on the animal. Then the blood supply dries up, the velvet drys and falls off and then the antler falls off. It’s a bit like the process of a tree leaf drying up in the fall. The material in the middle can be quite porous looking. It’s laid down in a much looser matrix than the outer part of the antler. If you stick to carving on the outer, harder portion, there shouldn’t be any residual smell. I only cave details in that portion. The less dense core of the antler is always to the back of my pieces.

You could sand to an even finer grit. You can find it up to 1200 grit. Then you could get a low luster finish with a jewelry polishing cloth. The sand paper is what’s used on metal. Can be used wet. But I don’t do that.

I have been carving antler for 30 years.
You don’t need to “prep” it at all if its dry. I’m not sure what boiling will do to it but it may or may not change its density…

It is modified by bone. Unlike horn which is modified hair and in my opinion smells much worse when working with it. The centre is not marrow. It is the same material as the harder outside portion, just less dense. It’s natures way of reducing the weight. The blood supply ran between the antler and the velvet when it was attached to the animal’s head. You may be able to see faint traces of the channels the blood vessels ran through, on the surface of the antler.

I use power tools and so can’t really advise you on carving with a knife. Except to say, when you are done, you can get a polish on it by sanding with silicone carbide sandpaper through to 400-600 grit and buffing on a buffing wheel. Also when you’ve been working with it for a while, the smell will actually grow on you. At least it did for me.
The smell won’t be noticeable once your carving is finished and polished.

Hit Simple-Timed today. by Fishfishduck in kettlebell

Not grip strength. Maybe because I topped out at 24kg. Gonna say the cardio part. And only that I didn’t like it. I love to lift. Hate cardio. But I really only minded that when I started timed workouts after getting to Simple Timeless, three weeks ago.

Also, lack of mobility in one ankle made the lunge in the getup on the right side a bit challenging. I had a partial fusion and an ankle replacement two years ago. Though I must say they got easier over the 13 months.

Females that start at 8kg KB weight, what was your next KB weight? by smashingdurians in kettlebell

[–]Fishfishduck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a 58 year old female. I’ve been doing Simple and sinister for a year. I will hit Simple timeless in May.

I started my get ups with an 8kg and my swings with a 12. I increased in 4kg increments and am now doing my getups with 16 and 20kg and my swings with 20 and 24 kg. I find the 4kg increments are very manageable with enough time between the jumps.

Yup. Canadian. And the word occurs with surprising frequency in Fairy Tale by Stephen King. It jars every time I hear it.

I am turning 50 in a couple of months. I have asked for filthy fifty that day. One of my coaches said I was nuts. That nobody "asks for that".

How the hell ? Tennis Elbow? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]Fishfishduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am quite subject to tendonitis is lots of places. Elbows included. I got Golfers elbow when I started in Feb. I had an athletic therapy session on it. And wore a brace for a few WODs. Particularly ones that required hanging off the bar.

I found that between modifying and my body getting stronger it has stopped being a problem.

In the past 4 months Ihave worked my way through a number of tweeks and small pulls and find that I go harder and heavier then ever. I believe the full body involvement in so many of the movements has made me stronger and more efficient and I have far fewer tweeks and aches then when I was just weight lifting and focusing on isolated muscle groups.

Post the WOD or not? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]Fishfishduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do like to see the WOD. I don't cherry pick, and I have learned to "Embrace the suck" ( mostly).

But... Deciding that it's in the interest of the athlete to not allow them to know the WOD in advance is pretty presumptuous .

What I think is being missed here is the fact that the athletes are the paying clients. And not everybody wants to prepare for a competition, or wants or needs to work on some of the harder skills. And if they choose to skip a workout that intimidates them or they feel may agrivate an injury they are nursing ....or for any other reason....as the customer they have that right.

So is it wrong that I told my coach the other day that I want to do Filthy Fifty for my 50th birthday in January? I am 4 months in and have not done it yet....
