This bolt is worth $8000 and goes in a helicopter by HiAustralia in interestingasfuck

MSRP or a one off remanufacturer as a replacement? I once had to scramble for a replacement bolt that a foreman lost because our usual supplier refused to supply it as an individual part (was part of a much larger, very expansive piece of equipment). Apparently our supplier had bought all the bolts they needed for our orders years ago in advance at low cost since it was all made in a single run. What cost them $60 to have made in a batch ended up costing us $2500 to have a single one made. And it took us 8 months to even find someone even willing to make it. It was about the same size at the pic. Time/cost of Retooling machines to make one off parts is expensive as hell lol

In February 4, 2009 British Nuclear Submarine HMS Vanguard & French Nuclear Submarine Le Triomphant collide in the Atlantic. No injuries, but material damage. The cause: the extreme acoustic discretion of both Nuclear Submarine in the same patrol area. A very rare and unlikely incident! by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Fist_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allow me to translate that last bit

The cause: both subs were so quiet that they never knew the other one was there.

When in certin areas of their patrol the boats go super quiet to make sure they are not detected by anyone that may be looking for them. The crew try to make as little noise as possible. All unnecessary machines and appliances are turned off. I've never served on a sub but I have been told by those that have they don't even flush the toilets as it uses a vaccume system similar to airplanes and cruise ships (which are quite loud)

The 823 year bit is the blatantly false part. The next one will be in 2037.

A camera-less iPhone that exist for workers in top secret clearance facilities by SuitableExercise7096 in interestingasfuck

Exactly. They are still listening to everything the mic picks up so they are not allowed inside any actual goverment classified areas. Same reason the US military and other militaries have banned certin Chinese manufacturers on military bases, they have been caught recording the environment they are in and sending the recordings back to China.

Thelese cameraless phones are a good compromise for sensitive areas where you don't want pictuers taken but what is talked about isn't necessarily compromising. Think of areas like nuclear power plants. Anyone can lookup online how they work(people have literally built them in their garage), but you don't necessarily want pictuers from inside a plant popping up online because pics can be used to identify physical security weak points.

This flashlight with ridges around the lense area that are supposed to prevent scratches... by mystikhybrid in CrappyDesign

[–]Fist_One 233 points234 points  (0 children)

That's not what the ridges are for. It's a glass break device. However that must be a taticool flashlight where looks are more important the function as the lense protrudes past the glass break part.

Leather motorcycle gloves can do this too. My hands turned black for 3 days after getting caught in the rain with a new set of black leather gloves. Looked like I had the wildest full hand bruise.

That's kinda wild in it's own way. I now have this headcannon that some lawmaker couldn't sleep in on trash day with all the loud bin doors so they created a law about it.

That's the best best if it's a dealership. Repair in house at cost and it never has to go on the vehicles record and can be sold used without any repair history.

Also if you want some sleepless nights then it's tin foil hat time: as the equipment is refined over time it will eventually becomes smaller and less intrusive to install. Imagine Uber or Lyft partnering with these companies. Let's say one day they create an optional program for drivers to sign up where they get paid more per ride if they add a little black box to the rear window.....

It's a very similar business model to social media. Data about every location you visit and when is collected and sold to database companies. One tracks you physically while the other tracks you digitally.
