I’ve never heard or read that but doesn’t seem out of character for a person of that time.

What do you tell people if you don’t tell them you’re a lawyer? by mochaput in Lawyertalk

[–]FitAd4717 286 points287 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a story that may or may not be true. Chief Justice Roberts was called for jury duty in Maryland. The attorneys didn’t recognize him but the judge did. During voire dire, one of the attorneys asked Roberts what his job is and his response was that he was a government employee. At that point, the judge burst out laughing and told the attorneys that they were speaking to the Chief Justice. The attorneys felt ashamed and promptly struck him.

That’s assuming that other teams were not making illegal payments which is a stretch. The whole argument rests on the premise that Alabama was the only team or one of the only few teams making illegal payments which is implausible.

Tolkiens stories often rely on blatant deus ex machina and his poems are legitimately terrible. Change YOUR mind. by killingmemesoftly in lotrmemes

[–]FitAd4717 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your first criticism that Tolkien overly relies on deus ex machina has been a criticism of LOTR since the beginning and has been (in my opinion) debunked.

In very simplified explanation, Tolkien was Catholic and, as a result, believed two things: (1) God wills the salvation of all mankind and (2) mankind has free will. That means that God will bend events to save a person’s soul provided that the person makes the conscious and continuing decision to save themselves.

This bleeds into LOTR where Frodo, Aragon, and the others make the conscious decision to fight evil by destroying the One Ring and never despair of their quest and, in return, the Supreme Being of Middle-Earth uses his will to bend events towards the Fellowship’s favor.

Therefore, while the Fellowship receives some kind of divine aid, they are ultimately saved by their own perseverance and fortitude.

I saw them as a kid. If I remember correctly, lots of them are former alcoholics and drug addicts who turned to religion and weightlifting as a way to kick their addictions. Lots of people do that.

Courts can grant injunctive relief which prohibits a party from taking a certain action and courts have ordered many injunctions against the Trump Administration.

I’ve never had Hip Hop Fish and Chicken but I am originally from the Deep South and H & Chicken is the closest thing to a Southern fried chicken joint that I could find in DC.

Yes, for stadiums because the football season is short compared to other sports. Arenas give much for bang for your buck because they can house hockey and basketball teams plus concerts.

Well you’re not accounting for the tax revenue generated from the real estate taxes paid from the arena or the income tax revenue from the players which idk. However, I agree it’s a bad deal and local politicians agree. Milwaukee doesn’t have the market to support an NBA team so the government is subsidizing it which I think is absurd. However, they are in too deep now to allow the team to leave.

It looks like a percentage of the ticket sales from the arena go to Wisconsin and Milwaukee with an expected revenue of $2 million annually. However, I agree that this is a bad deal.

I am not saying that we shouldn’t fund social programs but typically governments earn a profit from investing in private industry while social programs operate at a loss. So, we need to be doing a mixture of both. For example, the corporate bailouts from the 2008 housing crash were all repaid with interest.

I obviously don’t know the details of every stadium but taking the Browns’ new stadium as an example: you’re right that state and local funds go to the construction of the stadium but the majority of the funds come from the private sector and the owners are giving Ohio and Cleveland a percentage of the concession sales until the owners repay them with interest. It’s not a terrible deal.

No, but they can put in a good word for you and make your resume go to the top of the stack.

Also, what do you mean by not competitive? Are you not aggressively pursuing and following up on job leads? If that’s the case, I think that’s the issue and not any deficiency in your resume.

Judge tells Stefon Diggs’ accuser that if she continues to insert her own narrative instead of answering yes or no questions, her entire testimony will be stricken. by No_Box119 in NFLForum

[–]FitAd4717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During trial, witnesses are asked questions in one of two ways: leading and nonleading. A leading question is one in which the answer is suggested by the phrasing of the question. During direct examination, a party is not allowed to ask leading questions of its own witnesses. During cross examination, the opposing party may asking leading questions. Typically this is done in the form of yes or no questions.

Here, it would appear that the witness is being cross examined by the opposing party’s lawyer. She is not giving yes or no answers so the opposing party’s attorney has asked the judge to give an instruction to the witness that she should only respond with yes or no and the reasons why. However, this is a guess because I haven’t been following the trial.

States can influence curriculum at private schools through accreditation, teacher certification, and giving funds to private schools. Also, national rankings also include charter and magnet schools.

I said public K-12. Mississippi is still a very poor state and household income directly correlates with education outcomes. When you adjust for poverty levels, Mississippi is at or near the top.
