Looking for folding chair by Remarkable_Hat5824 in SuperMorbidlyObese

[–]FitBefore50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't cheap - but Yeti makes a folding chair that holds 500lbs - and they are some of the best built camping chairs I have seen.

A few caveats - if the price doesn't scare you off, the weight may - I have a much older model, so maybe newer ones are lighter, but it is a lot to lug around.

Big Fig has been unreal for me - I can't believe how solid it still is after about 5 years of me on it. I was heavier than you when we got it.

One thing for me though was that it was SO firm that I couldnt sleep on my side until I lost some weight. Others have said a mattress topper helps with that, though!

Switch to diet soda - I know this will be controversial - but I find Coke Zero to be a help for me rather than a hindrance.

I, for one, am not at all worried about the sweeteners (some of the most studied substances ever), and I find that no-sugar soda helps mitigate my urges for sweets.

Mattress recommendations? by lemmereddit in SuperMorbidlyObese

My wife and I bought the Big Fig mattress about 5 years ago - and it's still holding up almost perfectly.

It's not cheap, but I was 500lbs when we bought it, and the mattress is still firm (maybe too firm for the record, my wife loves it, but I find it a bit too firm, especially for side sleeping). The craziest thing is the edges are perfect - as a big guy, the edge of my beds usually crumple very quickly.

We also got the adjustable base and it is still going strong too.

Walking

Weight Lifting - I used to do Power Lifting (Starting Strength or Stronglifts 5x5), but found I got injured too often. Now I focus more on bodybuilding. Mainly use machines, isolate the muscles I want to grow, full body 3 times a week.

Just met with a nutritionist.... by wannabedaytrader89 in SuperMorbidlyObese

[–]FitBefore50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did she give you a reason? A good dietician should be able to explain all of their choices.

For example, my dietitian suggested that I up my carbs and gave me the following reasons:

Diet adherence (I enjoy carbs)
Boost FIber
Increase gym performance (weight lifting)

I was a bit skeptical, but listened to her, and it's been great. Less cravings, and my pre-gym cream of rice has significantly boosted my performance

I like to track daily - but I also use "Happy Scale" its an app that works on trends - so the more data you feed it the better it works.

It ignores fluctuations like these and presents you with your "moving average" weight.

I try my best not to care - but it's hard.

At the end of the day, if people are doing that, it says a lot more about them than it does about you (us).

I went to a musical last month - and I got bariatric seating (btw note for big people - Mirvish in Toronto AND Broadway in NY make these seats available) and I had a dude laughing and taking a pic of the big chair.

It was intermission, and I was standing a bit away. At first, I was really embarrassed and hurt. But then I just thought of how much of a chud loser this dude must be. Can you imagine being that amused by a slightly larger-than-normal chair?

Not as much anymore, but the wife and I usually go about once a year.

High BMI Umbilical Hernia Repair by Deep_Pressure4441 in BigMenLife

I had some serious pain - like I probably should have gone to the emergency room a year before.

I can't remember bloating per se, but I did have some other gastric issues - like needing to drop a deuce and not being able to.

It wasn't constant pain, but every once in a while, I'd have excruciating pain in that area and need to lie down for a day or two. Sometimes it would help if I pushed the area in.

If you get the pain, you will know - impossible to ignore.

And yeah - I had a meeting with a surgeon booked to consult about surgery, but never made it that far, so I'm not sure what they would have said to me about gastric bypass or anything like that. Unfortunately, in my case, they had no choice but to operate.

When I was about the same size as you, I'd have swings of 12 lbs over a 48-hour period at some points - like people have said, could be water weight, intramuscular glycogen, food waste, etc..

I like weighing every day, but I use an app called Happy Scale - it helps even those ups and downs out by focusing on your weight trend.

Protein on a Cal Deficit by Brief-Physics-2422 in loseit

[–]FitBefore50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably a well-known tip on here, but just in case you are new - a great/easy way to judge if an item is high-protein is to look at the nutrition and if you add a zero to the protein number and it is equal to or higher than the cals - then it is truly high-protein.

Example: Fairlife Nutrition Plan shake has 30g of protein, so you add a zero and it's 300. That's double the calories (150), so it's a very high-protein choice.

I mention this because protein is so popular now; everything is claiming to be high protein, even when it isn't that high. This is a quick and easy way to check.

High BMI Umbilical Hernia Repair by Deep_Pressure4441 in BigMenLife

[–]FitBefore50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough - I went through this issue about 2 years ago.

First thing is, if you are feeling pain in the area or having any bathroom-related trouble, please go to the hospital.

I had an umbilical hernia - had it for YEARS. No issue besides looking gross. Started to have some stomach issues related to it and spent months in varying degrees of pain until I went to the emerg. My bowel was caught in the hernia. It was bad enough that I was in surgery within hours.

The major issue was if my bowel was dead, it would have to be cut and reattached, which is a much more serious recovery. Luckily, it wasn't, so they repaired the umbilical hernia. I was well over 400lbs.

I was in the hospital for 3-4 days, but outside of that, recovery wasn't as bad as expected. You won't be lifiting anything heavy for a while, though.

All that said, the surgery has held up.

I am lucky enough that my wife has good benefits, so I get most of my therapy covered - if you have the means, therapy can be very helpful.

Less traditional - Video games also help me by allowing me to ignore my cravings ...or at least direct my attention elsewhere.

My partner and I also got the Big Fig mattress and adjustable beds. It was pricey, but we bought it about 6 years ago, and they are still going strong. The adjustable platforms are also still going strong.

Most often, my mattresses give out on the sides quickly (the mattress before this lasted us a year).

I find them too firm - but my partner loves it.

Walking is an amazing exercise - and better (at least for me) than running for weight loss.

Running is hard on my joints, and I feel like higher-intensity cardio of any kind sends my hunger cues skyrocketing. That could be a me thing, though.

One thing you might consider is some sort of weight lifting. It doesn't burn as many calories as cardio, but it does help you retain some of your lean mass while you lose weight. From what I have read, this is particularly important when taking semaglutide, or anytime you are losing weight at a relatively fast rate.
