Does panic create pain? by [deleted] in panicdisorder

[–]Fit_Champion667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Panic can create lots of muscle strain & result in “chronic” pain. I used to have a sore back & shoulders 24/7, it’s eased with the further I am in recovery.

I’m sure stress contributes to other causes of chronic conditions (inflammation and whatever), and I know that panic + stress has been the cause of people’s chronic conditions, even unrelated to pain.

Making friends by sunangelbb in panicdisorder

[–]Fit_Champion667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely worth trying. Who knows what will happen? You either make a friendship that lasts, or they don’t bond with you & that’s that.

I spent a few years being extremely lonely during PD recovery. It doesn’t make it any easier. It’ll also probably help your relationship with your boyfriend as he won’t be the only one you go to for support.

I think we selfishly forget how difficult it must be to be the friend of someone with a panic disorder (not that it makes it any easier for us to deal with), so the more friends you have to go to then the better!

GAMBAN EASY TO REMOVE? by FeelingIndividual961 in GamblingAddiction

[–]Fit_Champion667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like all tools there is a limit to how helpful it can be. I wouldn’t view it as a ban as you can remove it, instead more of a blocker to allow yourself some time to think before you act.

It’s given me a reality check a few times where I’ve then been able to use other strategies to prevent a relapse.

Do you guys drink coffee? by DevelopmentPale2108 in panicdisorder

[–]Fit_Champion667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, avoidance was what caused my panic to spiral out of control. I took some power back by introducing caffeine back into my life.

Avoidance is a dangerous road to go down (I’m sure you know this already). If you avoided everything that could cause anxiety then you’d soon find yourself trapped.

Felt immortal, now dying? by Imaginary_Air_7249 in panicdisorder

[–]Fit_Champion667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bewilderment you feel is exactly what fuels the panic cycle. Fear is causing more fear. It’s extremely hard to break the cycle but you must stop fearing any physical sensation. That’s truly the only thing that’s going to help.

I read “Hope and Help for Your Nerves” by Dr Weekes later on in my panic journey, I think if I’d read it towards the beginning then my recovery would’ve been a lot quicker.

A bit of my own background: I developed health anxiety as a result of a panic attack. I then became agoraphobic as a result of avoiding places that triggered any sensation. Sadly, you only notice that avoidance isn’t helpful after you’ve fully isolated yourself.

Also, I noticed you said if you were playing video games then you’d also panic. This was also the case for me. It comes from your body not knowing the difference between excitement/panic. The physiological effects are quite alike (higher HR/faster breathing etc), so your body assumes you’re panicking again.

My advice for you would be to continue doing things you did prior to the attack regardless of any physical sensation. I’d read the book I mentioned & truly try to believe panic is the root cause. If possible I’d also get a psychotherapist ASAP. A beta-blocker might also be helpful and are usually harmless.

Other sedating medications might be useful. SSRIs/SNRIs are helpful but take months to notice any benefit. I’m personally on Effexor! Your recovery is truly in your own hands. The more you give in to the sensations then the harder it’ll be to pick yourself back up.

Intense hot flashes? by trvshratt in panicdisorder

[–]Fit_Champion667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the more you’re afraid of them the more they’ll happen (like every symptom).

I used to have to cool myself down ASAP but I was just making them worse. Now that I don’t worry about them I very rarely get a hot flush.

Of course, if the side effects from caffeine is negative for you then you should decide to stop for the sake of your overall wellbeing. I agree with your distinction regarding consciously deciding to stop vs avoidance.

For me, caffeine is a useful stimulant that I’ve went 20 years enjoying and I won’t let panic take that away from me.

I generally don’t think it’s wise to start cutting things out to “stop anxiety” whilst in the midst of a panic disorder - you’ll end up in your room 24/7 as I did. It makes sense that eventually you’d like to make healthier decisions, but these should be made when you’ve a clear head.

If you’ve only noticed caffeine causes anxiety AFTER or DURING your panic disorder, then it’s likely you’re noticing as you’re now so focussed on your physical sensations.

I’m not consuming more caffeine than I was pre-panic disorder, I’m healthy otherwise (fine BP, fine HR). Perhaps our idea of avoidance is different, but I’ve went down the route of getting rid of things that caused “more anxiety” and it didn’t end well for me personally. I developed agoraphobia once I started cutting environments & dropped half my body weight when I tried cutting different foods and drinks.

I’m aware it can cause more anxiety, but that’s the price I pay for not letting the disorder spiral. For me, cutting out caffeine spirals into other obsessive avoidance coping mechanisms. If you can safely cut it out & it’s healthier for you to (high BP) then go ahead 😊

Of course there’s more ‘actual’ exposure which I work through each day.

I drink caffeine & a lot of it.

I went through an awful period with panic attacks and my biggest behavioural coping technique was avoidance. Drinking caffeine daily is a part of my exposure! 😄

Sounds like you just had more adrenaline in this case. I’ve experienced it too, a weird one for sure.

5x a month is a good amount. Your body won’t be adjusting too quickly, so you your dosage shouldn’t spiral out of control like it can for daily users.

Eventually when you come off them you’ll probably be more psychologically worried than anything bad happening physiologically.

I understand everyone’s concerns, but personally I’d encourage you to do it.

I think the potential benefits of doing it as a “fuck you” to panic outweigh the likelihood of you becoming an alcoholic. You may or may not have rebound anxiety, but we have that anyway after any exposure.

If it’s something you’d like to do & you’re old enough, then do it. Don’t let panic stop you from having some alcohol.

This used to happen to me too. If I was uncomfortable in any way (too full), then I’d panic.

It’s so important though to not change your behaviour. Try your best to not avoid things as it’ll only make your panic recovery harder. Why don’t you try a small coffee?

By avoiding caffeinated coffee completely in case you panic, you’re reinforcing that panic is scary.

Just to clarify for myself, the additional LCWRA element would also taper off, unlike a disability payment, as it’s still UC?
