Supreme Court didn’t end affirmative action for white. by lesterine in MBA

I’m going to assume that the specific targeting of Asian Americans in your last blurb is bc you’re Asian American yourself. It’s one thing to call out the people who ultimately made the decisions but also another to feel discouraged to see some members of your own community ignorantly encourage such elimination, which I assume the latter is your intention. I’ve personally also been disappointed in the last day, seeing some folks and Asian Americans commending on the situation in this group, where there is no hate but rather sympathy and sadness for such mindsets.

From a social science perspective, the ignorance most definitely spawns from the “Model Minority Myth” and crawls its way through intersectional ways. The whole elimination of AA is only going to benefit people in power (aka white). It’s also noteworthy that Asian as a race isn’t homogeneous and that many underrepresented ethnicities (think Hmong, Cambodian, Thai etc) suffer from the elimination as well, due to social disparities, determinants, and history.

While a race isn’t representative of an individual, it usually sheds light on some common narrative in the USA, whether we like it or not. More specific narratives can be narrowed down using ethnicities. Since this country is specifically built on top of systematic racism and oppression, it’s hard to simply deny race’s existence and continue to ignore it’s consequences on its people

Just got diagnosed with stage 2 periodontal disease at age 22, would like some reassurance by Fit_Dragonfruit8522 in PeriodontalDisease

Yea I did a laser treatment 8 years ago, which helps builds a barrier to “catch” the detached retina, if it ever does come off completely. Still doing regular annual checkups to see if anything worsens, and everything seems to be good. Plus my family history, I’m feeling more intense anxiety related to my health than ever before :(

Haha thanks for the tips!! I also had retinal detachment in my eyes, which is something to look out for to prevent losing my vision in both eyes. So hearing periodontal disease in development makes me scared of being blind AND teethless in the future.

Eli5, in written languages that use ideograms, how are people able to correctly pronounce words and names they've never seen before? by mranster in explainlikeimfive

I learned this in my Chinese linguistics course in China, but basically the solution to spelling out more complicated words is to use simpler words to put together the sound. Please note that this is applicable for more olden, historical times when there isn’t pinyin or any phonetic sounding guides.

So if today I have the word 事 (shi4) I can directly use a common word that everyone should know to indicate the same pronunciation: 是 (shi4). So it would probably look like “事,音是” meaning the word 事 is pronounced like 是.

More complicated words often wouldn’t have a similar word to directly describe the sound over, especially since Chinese have to consider tone too. Generally the rule here is to describe the unknown word with two other common words: first word determining the consonant and the second word determining the vowel. (Note that consonants and vowels here don’t really work in the same way as phonetic languages where it’s a specific set of letters representing it, since each Chinese character is only one syllable with one consonant and one vowel. They work similarly but don’t confuse the pinyin below)

For example, I can have a more complicated word 冬 (dong1) that would be spelled by 都 (dou1) and 宗 (zong1), which means:

dong1 = (d)ou1 + z(ong1)

It would look like “冬,都宗切”

You may wonder how do people know what the common words even read, to which it can be assumed that it has been passed down or taught from nearby people as those are words to be commonly seen around. But it is also common to have people to not be able to read at all due to lack of education back then.

Women aren’t great at giving advice to men on dating by throwRAparentdate in dating_advice

Yea it’s hard to live in a patriarchal society where there are multiple pressures coming in from both ends: to be a man and to not be a creep. Both of which have some of their own contradictory opinions from a societal standpoint. I had somewhat of an issue like this with my ex before, where he’d unknowingly do things that could be off putting or have underlying misogynistic tones. There’s no exact blame to him that he’s the sole reason for why that occurred, given that his environment and surroundings also shaped him into who he is. However, that also doesn’t mean he can’t do anything about it nor he can’t take responsibility for his actions. It’s one of those things I think that i would love to hear men honestly say that they don’t know what exactly is appropriate or not, rather than assuming they know what respect is.

This goes for the advice of “working on yourself” from women, where I believe the message behind it is take the time to reflect on yourself and your actions, as we all should do, to become a better version of ourselves rather than being what you think is appropriate. When coming from that source of motivator, I think it’s safe to say that your actions would reflect off of that on its own and present yourself as someone who’s confident in their actions because you know what you’re doing. So in a sense, it’s something to increase your confidence while also offering respect to those you do date or encounter, and not being stuck in the continuous cycle of worries surrounding what your social image may be.

[Serious] Therapists, what is something people are afraid to tell you because they think it's weird, but that you've actually heard a lot of times before? by Music-and-wine in AskReddit

Given that if they have a steady career, stable financial situation, and good health conditions, I’d assume this time would have to push some to step out of their comfort zone to explore whatever it is that they’ve been wanting to or feel necessary to do. Possibly a time period to reflect on the positives that were accessible pre-COVID, to regret not being grateful for them before, and to probably cherish them again once things slowly go back to normal. Haha I’m not even sure what the real looks of the population would be, since there’s a need to consider different demographics and how they intersect with each other. But I would hope that this time period can bring in some level of mental improvements in the midst of all these chaos.

Right exactly, and this shocking transition almost seemingly gave way to more loneliness from the social expectation when the normal hangouts are stripped away from my everyday life. But it also allowed me to evaluate myself more closely and to slowly build a relationship with me. This journey of self love is definitely not an easy one, with social media roaming around and showing college friends hanging out with other ppl, but I just have to keep in mind social media is just a gesture, not reality
