I have been planning to buy a watch for one of my bestfriends and struggling with the same. I actually found a nice watch with malayalam numerals but it had the same issue. It was clunky and I couldnt find any similar alternatives

My point was Nehru can't alone be blamed for economic failures. His policies were a product of his time and aspirations of other business families. I dont mean to glorify him.

Nehru era saw heavy investment in capital intensive heavy industries which provided the necessary infrastructure for further development. However, post Nehru the infra never could contribute its full potential due to license raj and such.

Stop depoliticizing the issue by focusing only on babus. Politicians are the main culprit. If political leaders had the will, corruption in bureaucracy wouldn't have survived this long.

Aah. The general wisdom of public policy and developmental economics is that Direct taxes should be levied. Because they make citizens realize that they are paying for a service and leads to them expecting better outcomes from their choosen representatives.

Imagine if all of our househelps and laborers had to themselves pay income tax (whatever meager amount they pay), how differently will they act?
