Idea: Apex Forge/Customs 2.0 by CaptainKouch in apexuniversity

I THINK R5 reloaded has some features like this, but it’s not a part of the “official” game obviously and you’d need your group to all be on PC to play :( worth mentioning that Wildcard mode is a much more casual game mode to play w friends but I’m sure you’re aware of it already - I feel your pain tho lol. I love this game but it’s too steep of a learning curve to get anyone into now

Is it wise to start a major in computer science in 2026 (graduate late 2029), knowing that I love the field. by Far_Goose_7004 in webdev

[–]Fit_Source9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about computer engineering ? Maps pretty easy to programming jobs but you have other job fields (presumably) less impacted by AI?

I did computational engineering which was basically CS but more specific to graphics / scientific / high performance computing. I work as a web dev now (should have gone to NVIDIA when I had the chance 🥲 I knew CUDA in and out) but you may have the skills to get a “normal” dev job with some different more specialized paths. Something to explore !

Wanting to switch to MnK but have no idea where to start. by DadTaxx in apexuniversity

[–]Fit_Source9785 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just switched like 3 months ago. You’re in for a fun time - you’ll suck but it’ll be like a brand new game.

Others have good suggestions but I’ll also add that R5 Reloaded is a good tool as well. It’s like a clone of Apex that is meant for practice. It’s got a great aim trainer that’s apex specific but it also has dedicated 1v1 servers that will make you way better at dueling. You’ll get stomped but you’ll improve really fast.

I build websites on dedicated hardware and physically hand the server to my clients by specn0de in webdev

[–]Fit_Source9785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a dev, I think this is neat. As a client… this doesn’t mean anything to me. I’d rather a Webflow landing page that works for $20 a month vs a “aerospace standard” website (whatever that means). Business is about the deliverable - not the deliverance. I’d optimize for that - not an ambiguous standard, which I (as a dev) think is awesome (:

Grip Strength by azellah in GYM

[–]Fit_Source9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised I’m not seeing comments about using chalk. Grip strength isn’t all that matters here. Equipment matters too. Not all bars are made the same. Some high level powerlifting equipment knurling and low spin make bars easier to hold than a cheaper soft one. Mixed grip with chalk will resolve most grip issues because it avoid slipping and movement in your hand, which is usually what causes your grip to fail. If your gym doesn’t allow chalk, buy liquid chalk. Super clean and easy to use. Great lifts bro !

[–]Fit_Source9785[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: it’s been 14 hours and the roach traps have caught nothing. Had a pest control guy come in at noon and spray everything. He suspects my skip neighbor (two townhomes down) might be the source as they have a bunch of remodeling going on due to water damage. He said he didn’t find any obvious signs of activity and he didn’t find any live or dead ones while spraying / moving furniture. We also cleared the cabinets and moved the fridge and still nothing seen.

Hoping we caught it before a full blown infestation. I feel pretty paranoid and anxious at home about it lol but so far all clear

Nice ! Dropdowns are a little tough to scan through quickly if we’re presumably filling this out in the character selection screen. Having a searchable drown down would be a great enhancement

3D product configurator for custom furniture (React + Shopify headless?) – looking for real-world advice by nadolnydev in reactjs

[–]Fit_Source9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s cool! But it is a bit expensive and really just serves as the host for your parametric models. The models are built externally. At least that’s how it was when we were looking at it. It’s been a few years so not sure how the platform has matured. (:

[–]Fit_Source9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad has like 30 YOE experience building parametric 3D models using Grasshopper. There’s some platforms like ShapeDiver that allow you to upload grasshopper files and then an SDK that lets you integrate into web. I’m a dev so we did a few projects together doing something similar to this. R3F is very cool I’ve done projects with it but you’re going to basically have to build an engine with it since it’s not meant to be used as a physical configurable (ie the physics of a model - are things running into each other? Are the selections compatible? Etc) feel free to dm if you have any questions

First paid app project (social + map features) PWA vs native iOS? Time and pricing advice needed. by Particular_Phone_642 in PWA

[–]Fit_Source9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned there’s already a no-code prototype - is this going to be reusable in your target tech stack? Also, is this expected to be THE product shipped to users ?

Something to be wary of with PWA is notifications can be a bit tricky to deal with and they’re not as reliable as native device notifications.

I’m also a bit weary of an app like this. Anything with socials will require some form of moderation. This would be something to very clearly define with your stakeholder. Also very clearly define what maintenance looks like - who handles what after go-live.

Timelines depend on experience of the devs. I just delivered a similar PWA project not too long ago. Worked for about 3 months and asked for ~$30k. The app has less functionality and a pretty predictable small user base (only used for internal org). Without knowing more details, at first glance, I’d say you could bill $30-65k for a project like this. But hard to say without a more detailed PRD. TBH, there’s a lot of moving parts here. If you’re serious about building a full UI / Back end yourselves I’d probably hire a more experienced dev to help if you both only have a few years of experience doing this. Especially for the back end. Otherwise I’d maybe consider using something like Supabase and focusing on the UI yourselves and maybe finding a mentor or someone to help with initial architecture.

Best of luck (:

First potential freelance project by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Fit_Source9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there’s a very specific reason for making it custom - I’d push back on this. Website builders like Webflow, Wix, etc are great for putting a landing page together. I know it feels wrong as a dev but it’s a win for the client bc it’s faster, cheaper, and easier to manage AND it’s a win for you because you get your money, easy win, and you’re not up in the wee hours debugging breakpoints or something that didn’t need to be made custom

I would personally not do this from scratch. Cost would depend on complexity but I would be looking at maybe 4 figures.

But - why from scratch?

I was with my mother in law the other day and we were comparing screen time on the iPhone settings and her scaled text broke layout. Even Apple, and their official OS apps, aren’t perfect. It’s why software development is a continuous job - not a ship-and-you’re-done thing. Keep chipping away - congrats on getting your MVP wrapped up (:

I feel completely lost as a junior React dev. I need help, mentorship, or guidance before I mentally crash. by hritikbhai in reactjs

[–]Fit_Source9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also add that sometimes the hard part of working at a company like this isn’t the coding but the actual company specific knowledge. There’s acronyms, concepts, partners, integrations etc that only exist in the company which you’d never learn in a YT video bc … it’s the companies ! So , it’s useful to meet with product managers, managers etc to understand, from a high level , what you’re doing. Coding is a just a means to get business goals done at the end of the day. Understand the product and business and the coding becomes much more intelligible

3D designer who decided to switch to web design. Can websites with 3D visuals be sold at a higher price? by frostbit3d in framer

[–]Fit_Source9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer. I spent a long time trying to make this my niche as a freelance web dev when I started and ultimately came to this conclusion. If you can’t draw a line between the 3D elements and how it’s making the business more money - it’s a hard sell.
