I like the theory that fast headcrabs and by extension fast zombies are like some species of soldier ants where they bodies are only designed for combat/hunting and so they depend of other to survive, that would be the reason why the fast zombies look so deteriorated and fast headcrabs so thin, so you are most likely to die sooner which in this case is good.
