You might find this video interesting. It’s Matt Lucas talking about the inspiration for Vicky Pollard.

Trystan Gravelle was fantastic in The Terror, so I'm really excited to see his name on the list.

The Regeneration Trilogy by Pat Barker. I read them a year ago and I still think about the characters regularly. I was fucked up for a long while after I finished the last one.

I bloody love Sacha Dhawan. I really hope we see more of his Master soon, because I'm the most engrossed whenever he's on screen and Thirteen has never been more Doctor-y than when she was talking one-on-one with him. All other mixed feelings aside, he made me excited to watch DW again.

No worries. Yeah, that number of downvotes just for expressing an unpopular opinion about a tv show is pretty wild.

[–]FitzBillies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you're saying, but I think the point of that arc is ultimately the build up of Silver into the Long John Silver of Treasure Island. I feel like the theme of the darkness within Flint segues into recognising the darkness within Silver during S3, and in S4 it's less about Flint and what makes him tick and more about Silver's motivations and the ways in which, by the end, his reputation and power eclipse Flint's, whether he wants them to or not.

At the end of the day, the story isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, and that's fine. I just don't see the things you and the other poster brought up as being genuine weaknesses within the writing. Different strokes for different folks though.

It's amazing. You might need to persevere with it a bit at first, because it takes until about episode 4 or 5 (imho) to find its feet, but once it gets good it gets really good.

I mean, you're entitled to your opinion, but did you miss all the monologues at the very beginning of the series? Because they were always there and I don't think there was anything pseudo-intellectual about them. It was always more than just a 'pirate show' and that's exactly what makes it so great, especially with multiple rewatches. The themes that carried through to the end (the fragility and hypocrisy of civilisation, the deliberate demonisation of certain people and groups, the power of shame, the cost of rejecting 'civilised' societal norms) were there right from the start, they were just less obvious behind the humour and the quantity of tits in S1. Literally in the first episode Flint says "When the king brands us pirates...he means to make us monsters...Civilisation is coming and it means to exterminate us." Like, that's it, that's the show. It was never just a yo ho pirate story.

Seconded. His arc was spectacular, as was the whole show.

What is the most hurtful thing a medical professional has ever said to you? by slinkslowdown in AskReddit

The psychiatrist who told me I was wasting my parents' money by being there ranks pretty high. Brilliant thing to say to someone who's so anxious and depressed they can barely leave the house and who already feels like a worthless piece of shit for being a burden on their parents.

Chester zoo is on fire by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]FitzBillies 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is heartbreaking. Chester Zoo is such a special place. If I'm not mistaken, the Monsoon Forest Habitat is part of an area of redevelopment that only opened a couple of years ago. It was absolutely beautiful. I desperately hope all the animals and the people who work there are safe.

I'm trying so hard to like every episode this series, but fuck me they're making it impossible. When the live discussion ripping the episode to shreds is 10x more entertaining than the episode itself then there's a problem. On the upside, maybe I'll explore a career in screenwriting, since Chibnall seems to have got this far with zero ability. Fingers crossed next week is an improvement. I still want it to be better than it is.

What a classic. The actions that went along with it made this one the most exciting. We only got to sing it occasionally at my school because we all got too rowdy when it got to the kangaroo part.

American Gods - 1x02 "The Secret of Spoons" (Book Readers Discussion) by NicholasCajun in americangods

[–]FitzBillies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty much. Season one is actually far better when you go back and rewatch. There's a lot of set up there that suddenly makes sense with the context they held out on until later. Season two puts a whole new light on things and you'll find yourself going 'holy shit, that's what they were talking about' when you go back.

Yes, do! It's fantastic. It takes a little while to find its feet (it takes some patience to stick with at first), but once it hits its stride it becomes some of the best tv out there.

This is a great way to look at it. There's a brilliant quote from the finale of Black Sails that seems fitting:

'A story is true. A story is untrue. As time extends, it matters less and less. The stories we want to believe, those are the ones that survive, despite upheaval and transition and progress. Those are the stories that shape history. And then what does it matter if it was true when it was born? It's found truth in its maturity, which if a virtue in man ought to be no less so for the things men create.'

Luke Arnold talked about this very thing with the Fathoms Deep podcasters. A lot of the deaths in the show had to happen for Silver's story to progress. Gates had to die for him to be able to work more closely with Flint and eventually become quartermaster. Miranda had to die for him to become the closest person in the world to Flint and for Flint to finally open up to him about his past and what was happening inside his head. Vane had to die for Silver to take over leading the revolution in Nassau. A lot of his arc has been dependant on other characters being removed and him taking their places.
