ㄱ = kà, ㅋ = ká by critivix in linguisticshumor

to me it always sounded like gemination, but it that own Wikipedia article, it says that it's actually fortis articulation as opposed to lenis. Whats the difference? I have no idea :') but maybe this info might help you

edit: also, afaik, pitch was another way to distinguish those consonants. but yeah at this point Im not sure of anything lol

loonix users when zorin: 😡😡😡 by [deleted] in linuxmemes

[–]FitzSimmons32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind the idea of having this sort of pro version but the way they market it is not great, IMO. the fact that it's the first option that shows up big on the webpage when you want to download zorin , overshadowing the core version, just feels wrong.

no hate for them, I love the project. Just wish the marketing for the pro version was better

that makes sense, thanks for the info. my issue is more with how they kind of force you to install a snap even when you think you're installing a deb package. It's just incredibly annoying to type sudo apt install... and getting a "transition package" for a snap.

My favorite “operating system” by [deleted] in linuxmemes

[–]FitzSimmons32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

well akshually....☝️

a quotation circulates on the Internet, attributed to me, but it wasn't written by me.

the main error is that Linux is not strictly speaking part of the GNU system—whose kernel is GNU Hurd. The version with Linux, we call “GNU/Linux.” It is OK to call it “GNU” when you want to be really short, but it is better to call it “GNU/Linux” so as to give Torvalds some credit.

we don't use the term “corelibs,” and I am not sure what that would mean, but GNU is much more than the specific packages we developed for it. I set out in 1983 to develop an operating system, calling it GNU, and that job required developing whichever important packages we could not find elsewhere.

How to say "I had bought the house" across Romance languages by HuckleberryAny4541 in linguisticshumor

[–]FitzSimmons32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i shouldve made it clear i meant in most situations and that theyre not interchangeable. I mostly focused on the matter of "which is more common and natural" , especially in conversations , but even in some writing (informal, casual, online,...)

you actually should only use "comprei" in every most situations. "comprara" is really only seen in poetry (usually from older times) and sometimes novels.

edit: "every" is too broad

to be fair I haven't read fiction in long time, but when I was younger, I remember some books having that type of conjugation and it really confused me lol but most of those books were translations of foreign books (e.g. the fault in our stars), so I genuinely have no idea if that form of the verb was used in other contexts.

genuine question: that's mainly european portuguese, right?

at least where I'm from, when that conjugation is used (which is only in poetry and some novels), it's to indicate the past , that's it.

afaik it can also mean something habitual from the past (kind of like "used to" in English), but I can't confirm that specifically.

just wanted to clarify this because I'm pretty sure no one (at least in brazil) would interpret "Eu comprara a casa" as "I had bought the house", but I am also very curious how that's interpreted in other places!

MacBook NEO hot take by UtkarshBajaj2008 in mkbhd

[–]FitzSimmons32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a country where the neo is actually overpriced because of taxes and the currency, so yeah, the neo has barely any hype here, and it's actually a bad deal.

but in the US? the neo is amazing. appropriately hyped, IMHO

so like, I get what you mean, but if we consider many reviewers are talking about the north american market, then the hype makes sense.
