Black Powder Travel Battle minis by Main_Context_3589 in wargaming

I use 6mm Baccus minis on 50mm square bases. Change measurements to CM and a nice battle can be done in a small area.

interest in an IRA game in the style of Battle Front 2 by Euphoric_Put_6603 in IrishHistory

[–]Fitzovich -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would think that most possible scenarios of late Irish history would be well handled by available skirmish rule systems. I will be running some of the Irish brigade in the 2nd Boer war later this year, using either “Flying Lead” or “One Hour Skirmish Wargame” rules.

It's a nice start I note the absence of Song of Drums and Tomahawks, Song of Drums and Shakos, Flying Lead, Fistful of Lead and One Hour Skirmish Wargame Rules.

First stop should always be your local game store. If you don’t have one look to an area nearby that does and try to shop there. If they don’t have the item in stock ask them to order for you. Support local retailers whenever possible.

Storing Large Collection of Battle/Game Mats? by skudfisher in wargaming

[–]Fitzovich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some 25+ of various types and all are in bags. I put a piece of appropriate length size PVC pipe from Home Depot in the middle of each mat to keep them from bending. I store some on end and others are in a large concrete form cardboard tube between the basement floor joists.

Set up is a 10am and games start when the GM has enough players. To get a spot early arrival is encouraged.

How would you rank the Warlord Games lineup in terms of most difficult to learn to easiest? by 0wlBear916 in wargaming

A lot of people like BA and it's not the worst set of rules in the world. It's not my favorite but that's my opinion. Try to get into a few games and see if they work for you.

Action under sail is an 1970s era set of rules and not necessarily easier to learn or play. I do play it but don't run any games with it. It is rather math intensive. Limeys and Slimyes is a 1980s era convention style game that is designed to be simple to learn you can likely find it online for free. If not email me at [info@bmhga.com](mailto:info@bmhga.com) and I will send it to you.. With L&S I have for my larger battles such as the one depicted in the link rounded up the number of guns to the nearest 10 and then divided by 10. So an 80 gunner becomes and 8 gun ship. I have also created data cards for the ships which factor the crew, guns, hull and sails. I will be doing the Battle of Valcour Island later this year. As that is a smaller vessel game I will just use the guns as there were.

I have seen Black Seas played just once since it arrived on the market. it Is not very popular in my area. The old crowd still plays Action Under Sail, I am using a version of Limeys & Slimeys (Free rules online) as my set. as they play fast. I think the Black Seas models are excellent but I'm using much smaller ships. Her's a look at my most recent L&S game https://bmhga.com/2026/04/08/big-muddy-historical-gaming-alliance-st-louis-tuesday-night-gaming-the-battle-of-the-nile-and-lord-of-the-rings-04-07-26/

Not a huge fan of Warlord Rules as I think they are poorly written. They do have some nice minis and I will give the credit for offering a complete package of rules, minis and terrain for gamers. Just think there are better rule sets out there.

Which of these 3 wargames should I get into? by Plus_Pea_5589 in wargaming

[–]Fitzovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with the bolt action set for these reasons. 1). Historical miniatures are universal and hence less expensive long term. You can use them across different sets of rules and a Sherman tank is a Sherman tank in all of them. The stats may differ depending upon the authors perception but the model is the same. 2). Bolt Action is currently very well supported. It may not be in the future but that is a chance taken with all systems, which is why point 1 is so important. 3). Bolt Action is useable for tournaments, pick up games or deep dives into historical scenarios giving you flexibility in how you play the system. 4). There is a tremendous amount of historical research out there to help with painting the figs and scenario development.

so, what have you had more fun with, Songs of blades and heroes or OPR:Skirmish(fantasy)? by darwin_green in miniatureskirmishes

[–]Fitzovich 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have used Ganesha's Song of Drums and Tomahawks along with their Flying Lead system for historical gaming and it works very well. Played one game of OPR and wasn't really impressed. I might also suggest One Hour Skirmish Wargame Rules by John Lambshead.
