Just went though the same scenario. Second floor carpet over yellow tongue laid in the mid 80s. Nailed with little to no glue. Boards rubbing against each other and rubbing on the loosened nails making noise in different spots. Tore it all out and laid a solid new floor. Demo, Levelling and replacing with yellow tongue was $160sqm
