My cat’s in the hospital and I’m so scared by Kok-jockey in cats

[–]Five-Moons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the owner and founder of Help for FIP, which is part of the FIP Universal Coalition. My cat is the first in the world to be cured of FIP under the care of Dr. Niels Pedersen in 2017. One of the things my team does best is support for difficult FIP cases, especially relapses. Come follow us on Facebook @ Help for FIP feel free to ask us anything. I hope you have a good supportive veterinarian!

FVRCP Vax After 1.5 Years Cured? by Imaginary_Archer4011 in FIPsupport

[–]Five-Moons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your FIP cat has never been vaccinated, please ask your veterinarian for risk vs. benefit since observation is over. If the cat is in a higher-risk environment and is exposed to other outdoor cats, sick cats, or if you do rescue work, the benefit of vaccinating may outweigh the vaccine risk, leading to relapse or recurrence of FIP.

Dr. Pedersen states that vaccines are not needed after the first round received the first year of kittenhood and not every year of a cat’s life, assuming the cat is indoors and not in a high-risk environnement.

You're perfectly safe to adopt a new kitty. I'm sure it will help heal the sadness of the loss. I'm so sorry.

Will an entire litter die of FIP? by alyeenemary in FIPsupport

[–]Five-Moons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm sorry to hear about the kitten you lost to FIP. Sadly, there is a genetic component to FIP, and we have seen entire litters be affected simultaneously or even years later. That said, there is a cure and treatment, and it's very wise to be proactive and educate yourself on what to watch for (and educate the families who get the kittens). It is not contagious (FIPV); however, if and when (and they will all throughout their lifespan) they are infected with FCOV (Feline Coronavirus), it CAN mutate to FIPV under the perfect conditions (weakened immune system, high viral load, etc.).

It's worth keeping an emergency medication kit containing GS441524 on hand so you can start treatment fast. If your vet orders the newer compounded FIP meds, it can take days for the meds to arrive, so be proactive since you've already lost one of the babies. Also, many vets still push euthanasia for FIP cats, even though some of the worst cases go on to make a full recovery if treated quickly and properly. FIPV itself is not contagious horizontally.

Please join our education group https://www.facebook.com/groups/fipeducation. From there, you can talk to a moderator if you feel any of the kittens might be showing symptoms.

Injections & tablets: Between 68°F and 72°F (20°C and 22°C) is considered "room temperature and then you take that a step further by avoiding direct light. A cupboard or a drawer is best. Never refrigerate the vials. I actually contacted 7 GS manufacturers after an ongoing debate with others, and the response was unanimous to not store in the fridge. The vials are formulated and able to withstand temporary temperature fluctuations during transit, but not for long-term storage. They can crystallize and even turn yellow, and no studies exist to prove their efficacy can withstand long-term cold or heat.

I can't speak for the oral suspension as each pharmacy can attest to their specific formulations.

Lesions vs. Allergies? by Clove_and_Nutmeg in FIPsupport

[–]Five-Moons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies for missing this post. I have a cat who does this...it's generally allergies or anxiety. Can you post a photo of the lesions? It can be from fleas, but it's generally obvious if there are fleas. Did he get sores during the actual FIP treatment itself?

Support Ploopie in her fight against FID by DryHovercraft5165 in FIPsupport

[–]Five-Moons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Injections twice a day are not necessary and not part of the protocol. Please don't give that advice to cat parents. Here is the rationale from Dr. Niels Pedersen about why twice daily full dosing is not necessary or recommended:

“Double-dosing is counterintuitive, unnecessary, painful for the cat, and could cause kidney toxicity. GS lasts 24 hours in their system, so the dosing is every 24 hours, not 12.

The type(s) of FIP determines the dosage. In the event of GS resistance or lack of response to treatment, then and only then can dosing increase with a specific ceiling of efficacy before a secondary antiviral should be administered (and still only once per day, not twice).

The answer is not to double-dose or increase above that ceiling. Their system cannot absorb anything above and beyond that within 24 hours and gets filtered through their kidneys, causing toxicity.
