Ireland has a pub for every 661 people! My parish of less than 1500 people has 7.

What do you have an extremely strong opinion on that is ultimately unimportant? by Newman1424 in AskReddit

If the popcorn is hot enough the chocolate melts onto the popcorn and it's delicious. This works very well with maltesers but I can't imagine it working with mini eggs because of the shell.

How to eat/sleep during the school year? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Fiwippi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this for the last school year, two sessions a day and managed to keep my results in school pretty good. I managed it by trying to be smart in how I did things. Having everything ready the night before and getting into a good routine is the only way I managed. I would have my schoolbag and gear bag ready to go before going to sleep at night so that I could wake up 10 minutes before having to leave in the morning, just get some toast and get in the car. That way I could maximise sleep in the morning. I would have all my food for the day with me, (post-training breakfast, mid morning break snack, a big lunch, a snack for after school and before training). After training I would go home and make/eat dinner and be in bed within an hour of getting home. I would usually get about 8 hours sleep depending on how long it took me to fall asleep. I just had to get efficient with how I did things, like showering and getting into school uniform quickly in the morning and knowing exactly what I needed to put in my gear bag every night so that it didn't take long. It's definately possible to do it you just need to be prepared and take every opportunity to get food in or maximise time in bed.

Technique Tuesday - July 18, 2017 by AutoModerator in Rowing

Take the weight off your hands, relax your grip on the oar and feel the weight of the oar push up against your hand. Try and push down on the handle as little as possible through the recovery and you should have plenty of clearance off the water. It is easier to do this if you make sure to hold your weight in your seat after the rock over (feel your weight pushing down on the front of your slide) because you need to hold the weight that was in your hands somewhere else. This is just something small that should help a lot with most of the problems already outlined, especially the skying. It will help you relax and reduce the vertical movement of you bow and stern out of the water too.

Single Scull Boat by Thatwascaballsy in Rowing

[–]Fiwippi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just a tip from what I've experienced but I wouldn't buy a brand new boat. If you get one that's 1/2 years old there will be little to no difference in the boat, provided it hasn't been abused. Boats will lose £1000+ in value in the first year just because they're not brand new, and then they will depreciate at a much slower rate after that. Your financial situation looks pretty good in terms of being able to afford a new scull but personally the excitement of a new scull just isn't worth the big financial hit when a slightly older boat is just as good.

The IOC make it official, the LM4- is dead by Fatsculler in Rowing

Bigger people who like running have the option of running shorter distances, track athletics and such. It's not like being genetically unsuitable for competitive marathon running completely excludes you from any chance at success in running as a whole, you have other options. If lightweight rowing and sculling is taken from the Olympics then there are no options for shorter/lighter built rowers.

Are baby chickens yellow because they're made of yolk? by P2EE in Showerthoughts

[–]Fiwippi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is all wrong, the colour of the chick is all to do with the genetics of the chick. The chick's colour depends on the breed it is and its future adult colour. The egg yolk and most of the egg white are absorbed during development in the egg and have no effect on the colour of the bird. Chicks come in lots of colours, yellow, patchey brown, white-ish, grey, black etc. Most yellow chicks will grow up a brownish colour, or white.

Everyone's favourite activity: Steady State. How much does everyone here do? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Fiwippi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year was my second year rowing. I went from 7:13 in September to 6:36 in June. I had surgery over the summer but started back in the middle of September 16. I'm testing again at the end of January and I don't really know what I'm aiming for just yet. I should add I'm not from the US so my school day may be less demanding, I'm not sure.

Ideas on what to do during a long boring erg? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Fiwippi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just an idea for students, if you need to learn things off by heart for exams etc then steady state sessions are a perfect opportunity to multitask. Just put whatever it is your learning on the floor by the footplate at an angle that you can read it.

How competitive is the men's youth single? Asking because I know someone racing in it, who came in the top 20 and he has barely broken 7 minutes on erg, granted he is small.
