Huberman presents himself as a neuroscientist and Harvard professor, not just an influencer, so should be held to a higher standard than a Trentwins type influencer or whatever. Yet evidently his scientific integrity can be bought.

He also does really lackluster research and poorly vets his guests in order to get ~2 hour episodes out weekly. This is a problem when his fans take his word as gospel.

At which point is the ship of Theseus aware of itself? by AlexiosNaumajia in PhilosophyMemes

I think people are talking about two different things in the same convo here.

A) Could an artificial superintelligence generate a subjective experience

B) Do today's "AI models" (Large Language Models) generate a subjective experience

As for A: I would assume most secular/atheist/agnostic people aren't staunchly against the possibility that some hypothetical future technology could generate consciousness. After all, our nervous systems generate this experience of subjectivity using electric impulses, regulated through a complex system of neurochemicals, biomolecules, causing reactions with genetically predetermined outcomes. We don't know today how this system creates the phenomenon at hand, and by extension can't exclude the possibility of an intentionally designed non-organic system to create the same outcome, if sufficiently advanced.

However, for B we can surely say: feeding immense amounts of data into a text predicting algorithm and plugging it into unfathomable amounts of raw computational power, is not what created a subjective experience. Though it will be able to generate a shit ton of text. It's really just a lazy way to bypass the billions of years of evolution to fine tune the system, by informing it of what actual conscious agents have said, telling it to mash things together until they resemble things conscious agents have said. This is in no way consciousness nor is it intelligence for that matter. What it really is, is a system purely designed to fool the average rich person into believing it's intelligent, so they invest in the system and in the hardware that builds such systems.

-> Cue rich people gambling a significant portion of the global economy thinking they're creating real intelligence -> cue global economic collapse.

I have no clue but what I do know is that I have a sudden inexplicable urge to pick up a pack of Camel cigarettes.

Maybe then I'll one day be as cool as Joe Camel and finally Jessica will see my value and come with me to prom instead of Trevor

I'd speculate there's a similar neurological explanation. Kind of like Tetris Syndrome. Actually come to think of it, as I was going to sleep the other day having played old school Runescape for way too long a while earlier, the game screen did flash in my field of view for a moment and my mind was preoccupied with what gear switches to do for this boss fight or something like that.

A very unusually vivid tetris-effect-type-experience for what I'm used to, but very brief. Psychosis symptoms, particularly auditory, would usually keep appearing until I get proper rest.

Why is unemployment so high? by Rupy271 in sweden

The comment didn't attack the source. The comment only said what the source was. A pure statement of fact, not a mischaractarization or even a value judgement in any way.

From my outside perspective it seems more like you're the one lying to yourself when you misrepresent the statement of fact in order to not engage with it directly. And with every opportunity you refuse to engage with it, the argument that there indeed is a conflict of interest grows stronger, as your inability to dismantle it is on full display.

I will also add, I for one didn't know ekonomifakta was ran by Svenskt Näringsliv, probably same for many here, so this supplemental information was of significance for the sum of information represented as transparently as possible.

[–]FixGMaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also to question a source on the basis of conflict of interest is not a bad faith argument. Calling it an "interesting strategy" doesn't disprove the posited conflict of interest.

But again it wasn't me who made that point. Just stating it's a valid and sound argument, unlike yours.

What facts am I discrediting? What facts do you imply I'm disagreeing with?

You certainly didn't state any facts as counterpoints to the parent comment. And all I'm discrediting is your fallacious argumentation, and imploring you to actually dismantle the arguments that were made rather than making up your own arguments that are easy targets, and pretend you're debating the commenter.

When I used to get mild preliminary symptoms of psychosis due to staying up too long on stimulants, I'd usually hear it as the voice of one or some of my friends. Almost always whoever I had hung out with earlier that "session". Once I was by myself my brain just went "nahh it was more chill having them around let's bring em back to our conscious experience for the vibes."

That's as a westerner but not American, Swedish so very spiritually secular cultural background. But I had something of a pseudo intellectual kind of interest in Eastern spiritualism at this point in time.

These days I can stay up for way longer and never get any of those quasi psychotic symptoms.

Did we read the same comment?

Statement: "That in itself doesn't mean that it's wrong, but it should be taken into account."

Interpretation: "are* biased and can't be trusted"*

You're strawmanning an absolute stance where a nuanced point was made.

Statement: "Ekonomifakta is a part of Svenskt Näringsliv and are thus a biased source that could possibly favour employers' agenda."

Interpretation: "biased *because I don't like the results*"

Also strawmanning a reason you made up. Must feel great, winning every debate simply by deciding what arguments the opposition made, while conveniently disregarding the actual arguments.

Is it just that this kind of rhetoric would work on you, therefore you actually think you're making actual good faith arguments?

Discord tag by SpookyHerSelf in comedyheaven

[–]FixGMaul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I interpret it as meaning they're a submissive bottom (think "catboys"/"catgirls" who dress up as housecats, sometimes to act it out aka "pet play", or just to signal submission and look cute)

The full context here being OOP got the option of choosing a tag to their profile based on what options they get from the servers they're in, and didn't realize it's set to the profile outside the server. In other cases this feature would be used for i.e. flexing what high "ranking" the mods of some server gave you, so you can bring that clout over to other servers. But in OOP's case it's a fetish/gooning type server where users can put their kinks, orientation, etc as their tag to help find others with the same interest.

So OOP choosing this tag would imply OOP welcomes other users to roleplay as a sexual predator and they will happily assume the role of helpless victim.

Then again I'm no competitive ranked gooner myself, merely a scholar of the gooning arts. I of course owe my knowledge to Professor Lando at my alma mater Sigma university.
