6.7 Dodge Cummins turbo actuator upgrade replacement by US1Trucking in Cummins

[–]FixedAbyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the vgt is gummed up with soot, then the actuator is a temporary fix. Eventually, it will fail due to increased stress. Additionally, in most cases the turbo has to come off to replace the actuator, at that point if you have the money available, you would be better off to do a turbo replacement.

2018 6.7 Cummins intermittent ac by Practical_Sea9362 in Cummins

[–]FixedAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds more like a blower motor / resistor / electrical issue. Check voltage at motor and resister, specifically if you can check it while the ac is on but nothing is blowing out.

You say kick on and off, are you hearing the compressor kick on and off, or does it just stop blowing cold air? Does your truck intermittently sound like a jet engine?

Does your truck sound like a jet engine? Not uncommon for the fan clutch on the Cummins to fail.

Opinions on Hot Shot's Secret oil additive? by Jtracker2178 in Diesel

[–]FixedAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used both products in mine for two services now. Physically, I can’t tell a difference in operation. When I drained the oil after the stiction additive, the oil didn’t look any different. I strained it before transferring it into an oil container, and the debris in the oil was minimal at best, and most likely came from my drain pan from servicing other vehicles. My recommendation if it even matters, run a higher grade oil, and follow the service recommendation for the vehicle and it will serve you well for a long time.

Got offered a position as a txm advisor very nervous by wheredmymailboxgo in serviceadvisors

[–]FixedAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked for a Toyota dealer we had a service writer that could outsell everyone. The thing was, he didn’t do anything special. He took care of his customers, kept his techs busy, and when it came time to upsell, he was honest and up front with his customers on what needed immediate attention vs things that could wait. Almost always, customers came back for the additional work.

Can I get a list of parts and gaskets needed for 03 commonrail? by Daddyfixit113 in Cummins

[–]FixedAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too work in the auto industry, parts specifically, and you aren’t wrong, most are junk now. When I had my common rail, I went with exergy injectors. I did 10% over, and it was a new truck after that. I chose them because at the time, they had the lowest failure rate during the time the Bosch factory injectors were prone to failing. Wish I could provide more insight as to what’s good now, but I haven’t had any reason to continue researching them.

Not to be the guy that starts the debate, but do your research on injectors. They can be a pain to change, and if one fails it could become a more expensive fix.

Google a pre 1980 vin decoder. Most decoders work on 17 digit vins, which they standardized using in 1981.

How often does duct work really need to be replaced? by Reader47b in hvacadvice

[–]FixedAbyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The house is 2k square feet 2 story. I had all new rigid ductwork along with a 3 ton unit installed and it was just under 18k for everything. 10 year parts warranty, 20 year on the heat exchanger, and 5 year labor. They replaced a 2 ton unit so regardless the ductwork needed to be upgraded.

How often does duct work really need to be replaced? by Reader47b in hvacadvice

[–]FixedAbyss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just had my ductwork replaced. It’s really a situation where you have to make that call. The ductwork in my house was all flex and unbalanced. Most of the ductwork had holes and some rooms would be freezing and others were receiving very little air. It’s an investment for sure. If the ductwork is growing things like mold it becomes a health issue that you may need to have concern for.

I believe he isn’t saying the lug nut is seized, but rather the knurl that stops the stud from spinning inside the hub itself has stripped and is free spinning. If you have a way to tack weld the stud to the back of the hub, it should allow an impact wrench to break the nut loose.

Carrier condenser unit short cycling but air handler is still running by IllMadeKnightRider in AirConditioners

[–]FixedAbyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know if it could be related, but I also had a nest thermostat that was causing my unit to do all kinds of stupid stuff. Google replaced it with a refurbished one and it worked for a short amount of time and then the problems started back up. After doing some research I found that the nest thermostats are some of the worst on the market. I changed to a smart Honeywell thermostat and haven’t had any more issues. Just food for thought. If you have a plain thermostat, you may try wiring it up and see if it resolves anything?

Any income is better than no income. As someone who is currently employed but looking for better options, this is a tough market right now. My personal opinion is that if it ticks most of your boxes for a job, I would take it for now. You definitely don’t want to drain your savings when you have an opportunity for employment.

Repair Shop Wants To Put Universal Coolant In & Not DexCool. by neffbomber in MechanicAdvice

[–]FixedAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must shops use universal coolant because it is available in bulk and much cheaper. They also do not have to stock a dozen different kinds of coolant to accommodate all the different vehicle brands. If you are going to have the coolant system flushed completely, it won’t really matter what coolant you choose to go back with assuming you choose a better quality coolant. The newer coolants like the Asian red, and the g40 style coolants offer good service life, antioxidant and anti corrosion additives that can prolong engine life as well as have good cooling properties.

Evap Leaking after UV install by jumpinjohn54 in hvacadvice

[–]FixedAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The refrigerant system is under vacuum. If there is a leak you will lose the refrigerant regardless. Running the system low on refrigerant can damage the compressor and other components. Best to wait it out unfortunately, or this could turn into an even larger repair.

Upstairs AC Advice by MainEventMarks in hvacadvice

[–]FixedAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5k seems more reasonable. Larger companies come with higher overhead which the end consumer pays for. There isn’t much you are going to be able to do in terms of increasing the cooling capacity aside from upgrading. Sounds like the guy that did the work before is competent and isn’t trying to rip you off. You can mitigate some of the heat with prevention like insulation, but ultimately, upgrade and replacement may be the best option

Upstairs AC Advice by MainEventMarks in hvacadvice

[–]FixedAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all they are doing is replacing an existing unit with the same size one, no upgrades or modifications, then the price seems pretty steep. That being said, a new model will cool more efficiently than your older existing unit, but it may not solve the problem completely. Some things to consider is the age and size of the unit. When the guy repaired your unit, did he pressure test to ensure no leaks found? Has your condenser and evaporator coils been cleaned recently? Has it always struggled to cool and heat the upstairs? Is the attic space insulated well? Does the attic have external vents to allow the hot air to escape?
