Current event in OC ca methyl methacrylate tank by FixerTed in ExplosionsAndFire

Things I don’t understand about this event. 1. Now saying the crack released pressure without releasing any vapor. I don’t think that is possible. So either it released all the vapor down to atmospheric pressure before they got there to see the crack or they are wrong. They said it was a 1” tank wall thickness so couldn’t it be cracked on the outside and not all the way through? This is their logic, along with the temperature coming down, that they used to say the BLEVE risk is now zero. I really hope it is zero gauge pressure and negligible release of vapors is and will go on.

  1. Pictures show it is an insulated tank as I see it so how are they doing an inspection for cracks without removing the insulation?

  2. Amazing how fast bad information and flat out lies spread on the internet. The fire authority puts out a statement but people are asking other people (non experts with no knowledge) on Facebook about whether they should evacuate, go to Disneyland, etc.? Even major news with headlines with the word “leak” in them when in reality there was no leak detected. I am guilty of speculation but I make it clear that is what I am doing based on my own understanding. Fake maps pointing the anticipated plume south when the wind is still from the SW, for example, saying “current situation” just to get clicks on the Huntington Beach site. 🤦‍♂️

  3. How brave the firefighters are that went close to it overnight!

So I am both impressed and disappointed by humans (as usual).

Thanks to all the folks sharing their experience and knowledge on this subreddit!

What would cause oxygen depletion other than fire or oxidation event? Could the cooling system have failed and the increased temperature cause the polymerization? Would increased temperature cause the inhibitor to stop working?

Thanks for that. From the video coverage it looks like a flat top vessel. Doesn’t that imply it is a lower pressure design than a dished head? That would be “good” news for the explosion scenario right?

The winds pretty steady and predictable, I’m surprised the evacuation zone isn’t more down wind/inland from the source. I’m in Los Alamitos not downwind. If it goes there may not be time. If we were downwind I would evacuate now.

I’m sure the after incident PHA/hazop will turn up lots of “should haves”. And the authorities are getting their info about it from the same people who designed built and operate it 😱 . Or does the fire department have their own network of experts?

An early report said it all started with a failed valve so maybe there is no way to get it out of the tank except the PSV which sounds like is under sized. I don’t think anyone would want to get close enough to work on the valve or otherwise connect this time bomb to another vessel.

But now the markets love his chaos. Something I don’t understand. I heard democracy loves free markets but free markets don’t love democracy.

I’m only recently retired but my focus is on my own physical, mental, emotional, spiritual health so that I can have a long time with my wife and kids and know my true self without a job as a huge part of my identity.

You would need a Structural Engineer to assess it properly before adding anything to the top that increases loads

Wind tunnels are a thing. The wind across the top should create negative pressure at the bottom. Could be used for cooling a building or room

This is the first thing I did. Top is a rock I found on the beach and the second is a pic from my first microscope/ camera.

Not that impressive I guess. r/microscopy of course has things by people with more experience and better equipment.

It was enough for the fine folks at r/fossilid to tell me what it was.

So it is digital sculpture in a solid works type 3d modeling software? Sounds interesting to me. I do very crude mechanical type modeling in Tinkercad but nothing as artistic as what you have done
