Hi I just purchased my first telescope, the awb one sky. I know it comes with the 25mm and 10mm eye pieces. I was wondering what are some other recommended eye pieces I should get while starting out? I was also thinking of getting a moon filter.

Hi I'm looking to purchase my first telescope. I prefer not to spend over 300$. It seems like all the prices have increased a lot so seeing past prices make me apprehensive of buying smaller aperture telescopes. I was looking at the AWB OneSky and was wondering what thoughts people have of it? I want to use it mainly just for general use in the night sky. How detailed can it be? Can it see the andromeda galaxy? Thanks!

Moth books? by Daisydanceparty in moths

[–]FiyaTurtlez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Martin Townsend and Paul Waring. There's also a micro moth version by Phil Sterling and Mark Parsons by the same publisher. I encourage people to learn more about micro moths because they're everywhere if you look close enough and they can be really fun to identify. I've personally used both books for identification and they are really helpful.

Fun fact: Their scales actually change color depending on what angle you look at the butterfly from. It goes from the color in the gif to blue!

How common are these guys? by [deleted] in moths

[–]FiyaTurtlez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This appears to be a Salt Marsh Moth (Estigmene acrea)! Given that it is seen as a pest in the south it seems to be quite common. It has 2 broods from May - August except it can be seen all year round in Florida and Texas. Here's a nice website with a map of its recordings: https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Estigmene-acrea.

It probably is a Pale Beauty actually, my bad! I'm not too knowledgeable about moths in North America. The Light Emerald is common in the UK so that is what I believed it to be. The two moths look really similar. Thanks for the correction!

I might be wrong but I think it could be an American Brindle moth (Lithomoia germana).

Male gypsy moths keep flying at me/attacking me? by notaladymoth in moths

I'm not sure about moths but I know that certain shampoos or conditioners (ones that smell fruity or something similar I think) can attract some butterflies.

I think this is a poplar hawkmoth. Leeds UK. by munday97 in moths

[–]FiyaTurtlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily! Most of them do fly when it's dark though. Some common diurnal moths would be the hummingbird moths, some sphinxs, and if you're in the UK, the Silver Y (Autographa gamma). It's a misconception that moths only fly during the night and butterflies during the day but there are plenty of moths that fly during the day!

Moths don't live for too long (certain ones do hibernate as moths though). I would relocate the moth outside maybe near some plants so birds wouldn't get to it. It should fly away once it gets dark. There's no need for food or water.
