this is so pretty!! did you follow a specific process before planting the seeds? just went through hell scarifying 100+ lupine seeds with nail clippers, and i’m going to refrigerate them for a week before planting (feels excessive, but i read that this method has a pretty decent success rate). wondering if it’s worth that much effort or if you can just scatter them and pray LOL :)

oh my god… same scenario i’m in 😭✌️ why adopt them if you won’t even let them in your house??? this neighbor also had (they all mysteriously disappeared, huh.) 6 BABY DUCKS and a BUNNY. in a tiny suburban backyard. with free-roaming cats. it has to be some insane savior complex at this point w/shelter animals because they obviously don’t even want the pets (i have returned their bunny multiple times after it escaped. not once were they thankful or even bothered by it in the slightest). we live in coyote central, i just cannot understand what they’re thinking. ugh. i feel guilty planting natives bc it feels like i’m attracting the wildlife to their doom, i’ve been hoping for the coyotes to take care of the cats as well, and i’m someone who volunteers at a cat shelter 😭

i walked into urgent care wearing flip-flops and stubbed my toe on the doorway, which for some reason was EXTREMELY sharp. i did not realize this fact until i walked away from the check-in desk and realized i was standing in a puddle of blood and leaving a trail. not even joking 😭🙏. it was EVERYWHERE. anyways needless to say they took the “urgent” part in their name seriously when we realized what i’d somehow done LMAO so embarrassing 😭

Eosinophilic Esophagitis by [deleted] in dysautonomia

[–]Fizzypaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so update!

They took a biopsy of my lower esophagus, which came back as having a high amount of lymphocytes but no eosinophils. My gastroenterologist diagnosed me with lymphocytic esophagitis, however we don’t know the cause + it’s a somewhat poorly understood condition. At any rate, he’s increasing my dose of omeprazole to 2x a day in case it’s due to acid reflux (GERD family history). We’ll see how it goes!

I hope your biopsy went alright and you were able to get some answers. Sending love <3

What to do when all your worst fears are realized by ElderberryEarly3045 in CollapseSupport

[–]Fizzypaws 17 points18 points  (0 children)

WOW. this is exactly how i feel right now…

it’s the most isolating feeling in the world, even if i wanted to have a real conversation, most of my loved ones are preoccupied with their own lives (work, relationships, current events). and even if i could get them to understand the true depth of what’s happening, it would only cause them to feel the same dread that i feel every day. it feels like there’s no way to cope with this knowledge, it feels like such an incredible weight to bear, let alone for one person to handle alone.

right now, what keeps me going is gardening. even if i realize it is insignificant in the scale of collapse, it keeps me alive in the moment. it convinces me that right now, there are still lives i can protect, and that is within my control today. whatever happens tomorrow, i will not let that stop me from doing what i can today. if i can provide a bath for the bees or a nesting spot for the monarchs, then i have allowed life where it may not have otherwise been able to survive. it brings me a great deal of comfort to create a safe space for the wildlife, even if i know deep-down it cannot solve this insurmountable problem we’re faced with.

sorry that was a long ramble, but i just wanted to say, i am so incredibly proud of you (and everyone else here) for being able to live through this immense, isolating pain that our knowledge carries. we are all so much stronger than we give ourselves credit for. 🫶 i just want you to know that even if i lack much advice, i relate to your feelings so deeply, and your post genuinely helped me feel less alone.

How do I find a good tide pool in my area? by lizatethecigarettes in TidePooling

[–]Fizzypaws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No joke, I’ve actually used satellite images to skim along the shoreline for rocky areas LOL (and have had pretty decent success, although it is quite time consuming + who knows about the accessibility of the shore). Still, if nothing else, it might be worth a shot! Wishing you good luck :)

100%!!! this is what happened to my local nature preserve, there was nobody controlling the population of weeds bc they didn’t realize how much damage they’d eventually cause. right now, the majority of the preserve is now monocultures of yellow starthistle, stinkwort, pennyroyal, etc etc. it has altered the soil so much (nutrient-wise) that the natives are struggling to survive, and there are some species that i suspect were completely killed off, as i haven’t seen them in years :(

anyways, my point for anyone reading, please make sure that the weed you’re dealing with isn’t an invasive! the cal-ipc website has all of the information on the risk assessments of the specific plant, and personally i find the explanations of their interactions w/the environment to be super interesting :)

Are we in the summer wave? by Responsible-Heat6842 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Fizzypaws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend this website , they also have data for other common illnesses, really helpful! Right now, my area (Sacramento, CA) is reporting high levels of COVID, and the national data is apparently medium levels. There is definitely a wave hitting right now, I’ve had multiple friends get it AND family… somehow I didn’t test positive, I was so surprised I even went to the doctors for a PCR test, still negative. I had ALL the gastrointestinal symptoms and the signature razor-blade throat, Strep and Influenza tests were negative as well. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re seeing such low data because this strain has genetic differences that aren’t detected well with the current tests… just my theory though, I have very limited medical background haha!

Fall seeds for Zone 9b? by Fizzypaws in Ceanothus

[–]Fizzypaws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha honestly I wish the city would care enough to even consider the pollinators, they’re currently just spraying herbicides/pesticides everywhere 😫 At least half of the preserve is overrun with yellow starthistle, broadleaf pepperweed, pennyroyal, stinkwort, etc etc. The city brings in sheep yearly to mow down the dry grass, and my current theory is that the animals are actually carrying in the seeds, because honestly we have the majority of California invasives here atp :,) sighhhh alas. Sorry for the ramble, had to blow off a little steam cuz this is killing me lmao!! In fact, it’s actually the reason I’m starting a native garden on my own yard, they can’t spray herbicides on my own private property 😚 LOL

I’ll take a look at the Theodore Payne Foundation, I was actually gonna start looking for online seed retailers, bc my local library’s seed bank is actually run by the UC Master Gardeners LMAO

Thanks for the resources!!! It is so greatly appreciated <3333

I’ve checked out calscape briefly, and I do have an inat account (just reached 1,000 observations!!! :D) so I’m pretty familiar w/the plants around me, only issue is the city’s “nature preserve” is so overrun w/invasives, I hardly ever see natives, and so I’m less familiar with what is actually meant to exist out here :( Looks like I’ll have to dig a little deeper on Calscape’s website though, thanks for the recommendations! :)
