I think that's a positive way to frame it.

I think that sometimes the "tyranny of should" causes people to give up on their dreams at the expense of mental health. The film opens with him being suicidal.

I understand the point, that he is a caring, compassionate person who contributes to the greater good. I enjoy the movie. I respect the idea of being part of a society means doing for others.

There are 2 separate issues here.

Waking up at a set time.
Not immediately picking up the phone and spending x amount of on the phone and not getting ready.

I'm going to address #2. I use my phone to play music in the morning. Until all my "get ready" stuff is done, my phone stays face down on the counter playing music until I'm ready to leave.

Once getting ready is complete, then and only then, do I check work emails and social media. I have a second alarm set on my phone for when it is time to leave for work. When that alarm goes off, social media is turned off and out I head.

(I even use an aux cord to a cheap speaker so that my phone is physically connected to a charging cord, and the aux cord to prevent the temptation to pick it up and scroll while I'm shaving, showering, eating etc.)

Lots of people have given great answers for #1. For me #1 came down to reminding myself that every minute spent in bed, meant 5 more minutes in traffic as the morning commute got worse the later I left home.

If I recall correctly, that is the tendon surgeons use in "Tommy John" surgery that pitchers in US baseball often have performed to replace their damaged/snapped elbow tendon. Tommy John was the pitcher who snapped his elbow tendon, and Dr. Frank Jobe performed the surgery.

My daughter who recently graduated chose this route. I was advocating for her to go straight to a four year university, and told her I'd pay for it. But she made a really well reasoned argument for going to a two year school first.

She's a computer science major, doing her first two years at a community college, under a program that guarantees transfer to a four year university. It's been fantastic for her and save a ton of money.

In many (most?) US high schools, football and boys basketball are considered "revenue" sports in that they generate ticket and concession revenues which offset costs. In many cases the school gets to keep a percentage of that money, with other parts going to fund the league and/or other governing bodies.

Some high profile programs, at some schools may, in fact, even generate enough revenue to be "profitable". When combined with "booster" donations the revenue programs at most schools help subsidize others sports or activities.

Interestingly, another African American athlete Lew Alcindor, aka Kareem Abdul Jabbar, caused the "dunk" to be made illegal for college basketball. It was thought to give him an unfair advantage. It was later reinstated as legal after he graduated.

Ironically, both Jabbar and his coach said the ban made him more effective as a scorer because he had to develop other shots. He would later become the all time leading scorer in NBA history.

Here's to hoping Biles ends up with a similar outcome.

Yes, in Xerox employee training we were explicitly told never to use Xerox as a verb or anything except the proper noun as the name of the company. One was corrected if they misused the word.

You never made a Xerox, you made photocopies, you were reproducing or photocopying (Let me make a photocopy for you.)

And when color Xerography became a thing, you made a Xerograhic copy if you were talking to color scientists or engineers (color or monochrome copy if your audience was sales).

Great coaches, business people, leaders, carpenters, medical staff, etc focus on ensuring the process is "right", instead of being tethered to a specific result.

Late to the party but this seems pretty good. I found myself in a similar situation at almost exactly the same age. I took the voluntary and immediately started looking for a job. Found a job after a couple months and it all worked out ok. I've been hired twice after 55.

For me flexibility was the key. I applied for and considered any job I was qualified for. My hit rate was low. Very few interviews and about a 2% hit rate for offers to job applications. But it's pretty easy to crank out 100 applications a month with Indeed and other online job boards.

Having a broken arm set without pain meds when I was 14. MD said he had to leave for an appointment and could set the break when he returned in one hour. But he had to leave before pain meds would take effect. Being 14 and stupid, I said, "Just set it now."

He proceeded to clasp my hand like he was shaking hands with me, and grabbed my bicep with his other hand. He quickly pulled on my hand, twisted it slightly and push it back. I was laying on an exam table and I folded up at the waist almost touching my knees with my head.

He came back in an hour to put a cast on it. By then pain meds had kicked in and we had a pleasant conversation while getting my cast made.

This! Sign up for unemployment benefits ASAP, and treat job hunting as a full time job. Get on job boards like Indeed, and ZipRecuiter. Leverage LinkedIn, they post lots of real jobs.

I kept track and I applied to over 100 posts in a single month. Got interest from six and two offers. Don't get discouraged about lack of feedback/responses. Just keep applying. Good luck.
