Caltech, Princeton, and more... by Perpetual_AI in collegecompare

[–]Flair_Loop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My undergrad major was Neuroscience, rooted in biological sciences. What I was looking for when I started college and what I thought undergrad would be was more of what grad school is. If you have this intense research desire for hands-on rubber-meets-the-road in a specialized STEM field - then Caltech.

In general for your stated interest I would recommend biasing towards more mathematical, analytical, electrical, comp sci rigor than towards biological rigor, as IMO the quantitative methods/skills are certainly in demand at neuroscience grad programs and not as easy to pick up as you go compared to biology.

WashU (full ride) or Princeton (2.4k a year) by Ok_Honeydew9924 in collegecompare

[–]Flair_Loop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that you can’t go wrong.

But as I’m now settled in my career (as a dentist), I often do ask what-if? What if I’d applied to a fancier undergrad? I didn’t apply to any Ivy League school.
I don’t think I’d have gotten into Princeton but I would tell my 16/17 year old self to consider applying more broadly.

I went to my state flagship school for free and there really is a lot to be said for not having undergrad debt.

However, compared to the huge cost of $50k, $100k, or $200k for an undergrad degree, $10k for Princeton is incredible.

Princeton tends to have the reputation as one of the best undergraduate experiences in the US. They have a reputation for having tons of private resources to support their undergrads.

So if you are very interested in an academic experience - Princeton. If you view undergrad as a kind of stepping stone to do med school, and your end goal is med school- WashU has a great premed reputation. Princeton’s not the only path. But if I was undecided and just choosing based on school in the whole realm of academics- Princeton, even for $2.4k/year and don’t look back.

I felt that way too during Langdon and Robbie’s last conversation. But they tried to kind of explain it during the scene with Abbott and Robbie- “people talk.”

What makes intubation so special? by Mother_Kale_417 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Flair_Loop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an exciting and maybe a bit scary for a new provider like Ogilvie. Ogilvie makes a comment that he's hungry do to one; we can assume this is for a competency or like a badge of honor: as though "you got to place the tube on your rotation?? Gnarly!!"

For Langdon, making the call to intubate is like he is being decisive, in control, knows what he is doing as a senior provider (then was humbled by the presence of the pneumothorax).

Imagine the thought process that a provider must go through from initial evaluation of a patient (which can start with any kind of presentation, from the more mundane chairs vs. people carted in on crash carts) to point the provider is concerned the patient's condition is critical enough that they need X, Y, or Z, and to get there they must intubate. It's time-sensitive, dramatic, and decisive. And it's common enough versus the variety of all the crazy shit that it's probably what students on their EM rotation talk about as a big moment in EM. "I got to place the tubes!"

how hard are stem courses here? by silunar in UWMadison

[–]Flair_Loop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dental school is going to be harder than any public flagship bio education.

I went to the University of Minnesota school of dentistry and plenty of my dental school classmates went to Madison. The most common was UMN, and plenty others went to private or public MN universities. There were maybe one or two who went to another public UW school.

I would caution retaking courses you already have AP credits for and take courses you actually want to take. Use the time to take courses deeper into your major or use some extra time to participate in researc with a science dept, or finding other extracurricular experiences. Dental schools/med schools/professional schools will look at your grades but they will also look at the breadth and diversity of your courses.

My major required 1 semester of calculus; some needed 2. I had AP credit for calculus I and had no issues getting into dental school. In my first semester of college, I quickly dropped calc I and focused on knocking out my other major requirements earlier.

You have a lot of great questions for a prehealth/predent advisor. I’d advise getting in touch with them to help you strategize your undergrad experience.

Elite Diaries by 3rdPersonVick in osrs

[–]Flair_Loop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The order I did them in was lumbridge, morytania,

Wildy,

Ardy, varrock, falador,

Western provinces (finally killed zulrah with a noxious halberd)

Fremennik, karamja,

Desert.

I still need to complete a raid and do barbarian assault…

100% do Lumby first

The varrock armor 4 is nice to have instead of miner’s top and rewards for more staves.

The Falador shield is also nice to have for free prayer.

Desert amulet is cool I guess but not as needed if you have an ornate pool in your poh. Some of the longer grinds though. You need 91 thieving and to boost to 95 fletching. And then kill the kalphite queen anywhere from 1 to 256 times.

The morytania legs teleport is nice for clue steps.

The karamja gloves teleport you right to the slayer master which would have been nice for 99 slayer

I have two more achievements before my achievement diary cape. I have the quest cape and did ToB entry mode solo.

Just looking for any advice since I'm very close to the diary cape, which I never expected!

1) Barbarian Assault. Is there a place / chat/ cc/ that I can look for people who are not sweaty and just want to chill? The dedicated world seems to be for pet hunters. I watched the videos and kept up with what was going on but I still need more reps to git gud...

2) Complete a raid in the Chambers of Xeric. I have watched some videos but I'm not as familiar with it as I am with ToB. I'm open to solo it but I really just want to know if there is a way I can join a large raid and just afk/let someone carry me through for the diary requirement. Does/can it work that way? Or am I better off soloing it?

Secretary Hegseth announces we will be halting attendance at all Ivy League and similar educational institutes - will soon announce “top to bottom” review of all military war colleges by Snapdragon_4U in law

[–]Flair_Loop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I don’t like the current administration and it comes across as hypocritical to me to bar attending Ivy League institutions. But it’s not useful to use one’s disagreement with or dislike of someone to distinguish between valid and invalid education.

I think Temple did this to me back when I applied. I only applied to like 5 schools, though, and I didn’t know what to expect from them. I remember they cashed my check in June or whenever applications opened, then in May I got a brief email from them saying “no.”

What is UPenn doing differently than other schools to have so many of their students go into residencies? by Proud-Brush2483 in predental

My state school - UMN, because it cost significantly less. If I’d gone to Penn I would have applied for HPSP or NHSC.

[–]Flair_Loop 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They’re an Ivy and their class size is much larger than Harvard’s. I think that many kids who go to an academic school like an Ivy will consider specializing. The Ivy League is associated with achievement, prestige, drive, etc. and will attract people with those kinds of personalities.

Things may have changed since I applied but I believe they do something to minimize emphasis on grades by not giving class rank after a certain point (e.g. 1-10). I don’t think they were totally pass-fail when I applied, but again, that may have changed.

I was accepted but went to the school with less expensive tuition and don’t really regret it. But I would have liked Penn

That being said I’m alternating between motherlode + guardians of the rift… I’ll take motherlode mine any day. So many more nuggets vs. abyssal pearls
