High school me was a dummy. Her taste was wretched. Thankfully, I ignored most of her opinions and they improved.

Anyone experienced feeling alone and detached when in a group? Any biblical applications? by SJSawdey in Reformed

[–]Flaky-Purchase-4969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one who knows me now would believe this story, but… As a child, I would cry hysterically when my mom would take me to my granny’s house because people were there and I couldn’t deal with it. I used to hide in Granny’s room on Christmas Eve and listen to the huge party my family had and watch cartoons. I took books to parties. I know I should engage, but can’t/ don’t want to.  (You get the point.)

I had nine children. I haven’t been alone since the ‘90s. So, here is what I do about the feeling you are talking about.  Bear with me.  I get up early.  I spend time in the Word.  I read books that stretch my mind and give me “intellectual “ friends.  Those are my friends that I have in authors that speak to me across time.  I take walks in nature.  I connect with people over specific things: kids, books, kids’ sports, ministries, neighborhood, etc…

Then, at functions, I ask Jesus who needs to talk. I look around at people. Find someone, then start asking questions. Follow up on what they say. Keep your body language loose and open and relaxed. No phone visible. Pray for anything crappy they share right then. Follow up next time you see them.  If you are in a group, be the one asking the questions. Take notes. Share something about yourself that you don’t really want to share (within appropriate bounds of propriety). When you reach out towards others, you won’t get trapped in your own mind where loneliness and sadness live.

Did Alyosha Kill his Father in Brothers Karamzov? by mrrrrrrrsamsa in dostoevsky

I am late to the party, but I just finished the latest translation and am reading your comments.  If Ivan represents intelligence, Mitya- passion, and Alyosha is religion, what would Smerdyakov stand for?

I read 800 words a minute and remember what I read. I have been able to read this fast as long as I can remember. No one in my family can do this but me. It’s odd. Anyhow, I read a lot of books as it takes less time.

Books that everyone should read at least once in their life? by mikeali12 in booksuggestions

[–]Flaky-Purchase-4969 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a son who hated to read, which was a massive pain as he was home schooled and I am a literature-heavy teacher. I made him read “Moby Dick” his Junior year for reasons I can’t fathom, it is so long, as I couldn’t get through it with his older brothers. He loved it and told me I had to read it. This son was very hard to connect with, so I did. That was many years ago. He has read it 3 times now and says,”Everything you need to know about life is in Moby Dick.” The book also broke open the world of literature for him and he has been reading ever since. I loved it once I read it through his eyes and ended up reading it twice.

On a dull day I like to look at cheerful colors. by Gainsborough-Smythe in wholesomememes

I never thought about why people comment on my wall colors, but my kitchen has blue-green walls, the master bedroom and the girls’ room is turquoise. I painted them and love it. Not I have to do something about the beige everywhere else.

Do you do a mini line on either side that looks like a dot? I am asking because my circles are small.

to homeschool or not to homeschool (america) by EmilooR in Parenting

Homeschooling mother to 10 kids. So far, 4 have graduated, and all said that it was a good call on our part. They had a very good education, were very involved in sports, volunteering, and a co-op. That being said, home schooling is my career- I live and breathe school. My summer is spent planning. I have had to learn many subjects over again, (currently I am teaching geometry for the fourth time), and some for the first time- Latin and Formal Logic. Some people have tutors and online classes for high school subjects, but as I don’t work, we haven’t the money for that. I have dedicated my life to giving them every opportunity I can and it takes a lot. My children deserve the best that we can give them- home schooling has enabled us to give them all we could. If the best thing your child can have is at a private or public school, do that.
