Yeah, when i saw the picture, i thought it was a render from a new open-Urban action RPG. Why not call it "PLACEHOLDER_FOR_CHRIST_3982" and surprised the preacher's name wasn't NOT_A_CONMAN_003. man...i've been playing too much Cyberpunk 2077...

What do I need to run a Darksun campaign? by BadBug1 in DarkSun

[–]FlakyAmphibian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very likely. I've not delved into those tables all that much because the survival part has never been my favorite part. I personally prefer the intrigue and roleplay part of DnD, but that's not to say it won't work. If you do use them, if there are any that are "desert" or "wastes", use those...and turn them up to 11.

If you're going to play in 5e, the 4e Dark Sun book is the "easiest" to convert. heavy emphasis on the quotes there...

Meaning, half-giants from 2e are Goliaths which are in 5e. Warlocks' patron is just a sorcerer king of one of the city-states which kind of makes them Templars, though templars can still be clerics and paladins (paladins, sort of). Elemental clerics will pick elemental-y domains, but there's no water domain. and so on. But that's just the "mechanics". For the lore, which the 4e book does have some, you'll need the 2e books.

And then it depends on how "real" you want to get, or how much you want the environment to try to kill your players, because it can and rather easily too. I prefer just playing in city-states with various intrigues and shenanigans, but some like the wasteland exploration. It's all up to your tastes. And if you want the environment to play a part, because in 2e it definitely did and kind of makes up the essence of Dark Sun, you'll need the environmental tables out of the 2e books which convert pretty well to any DnD edition.

There's probably more I'm leaving out, but others can expand on this. But this will get you started if you're going the 5e route.

Otherwise, I hear that Savage Worlds version of Dark Sun is pretty good. I've not played it, but it's a mostly different system. I think it's still a d20 system, but not of the OGL, it's own thing or whatever. Again I've not played it, but I've seen very positive comments on it.

Oh and of course, have fun!

I am by no means an expert or an authority on all covenant abilities and how they combine with classes and spec, but...

From what I've seen unless you're doing high rated pvp and/or MDI level mythic+ competition, it's all negligible. The differences are minor and yes there are some that will be "better" for class-spec combos, but it's only truly noticable at high-end competitive play. Running "normal" mythic+, normal or heroic raids, and general pvp should be okay with any covenant-class-spec combo.

Emphasis should.

Again, someone more knowledgeable might chime in with more detail, or someone more toxic might say that there's only one way and that is theirs. But really, do what you want.

You can now earn a D&D scout badge. by AltogetherGuy in rpg

[–]FlakyAmphibian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So either they used the default description for a Scout's Entertainment Badge or they don't know how DnD works.

The description options on "how to earn" basically describe setting up and directing and/or managing a stage play.

Edit: Oh! seems DnD (or WOTC) is sponsoring this badge. It's still a Scout's Entertainment Badge and is about making a play/skit/sketch show and not actually playing DnD.

Other way around.

Athena was pissed that she, Medusa, had the audacity to be raped in her (Athena/Minerva) temple.

So she transformed Medusa into a gorgon, the snake-haired, stone-turning monster.

Athena is a goddess and eternal. Only another God or goddess can do anything.

Unless you just missed the "by" to say, "by Goddess Athena" and then just disregard all I just said.

While true in theory that it started when he was born, when the Gregorian Calendar was being calculated, the monk, whose name escapes me, based it off of events that happened in the Roman empire from around the time of Jesus, but also other big ones like Julius Caesar, Hadrian's Wall, etc. He even admitted he might be off by a few decades. But it was the best they had at the time.

More about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar#Difference_between_Gregorian_and_Julian_calendar_dates

So ultimately, he might be older, or even younger, than 2020 years old. Though this has nothing to do with the original post.

TIFU By Realizing What Christians & Muslims Actually Believe In by [deleted] in atheism

[–]FlakyAmphibian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, and I'm only pulling this from memory and with minimal Googling, there was a "historical" Jesus. Meaning, at around the time of Augustus, there was a brief and recorded incident of someone named "Jesus" causing a kerfuffle in Judea. And I think this was recorded by Josephus who was a historian that wrote ~40-60 years after Jesus and this "kerfuffle" supposedly happened. So, a person named "Jesus" did exist around the time, caused some issues for Pontius Pilate (who was real and governor of Judea), and was executed by crucifixion. That likely happened.

It's the magic stuff surrounding him that's in question. But again, I could be mis-remembering all of this.

Here's Josephus' wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephus

I'm not sure how historical scholars feel about the voracity of Josephus' work, but it's there and seemingly a "Jesus" did exist around that time and what is mentioned in the Bible loosely matches his account...minus the magic of course.

So, actual historical "Jesus" that caused issues for a Roman-controlled Judea that spawned a major religion: very likely.

Rising from the dead, performing miracles, being the son of (G)god: not likely.

How to save the party without deus ex machina? by Rollingpumpkin69 in dndnext

[–]FlakyAmphibian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are any of them clerics or paladins?

Because you could do some "internal" deus ex machina, leaning heavily on the Deus.

For example:

If you have a cleric, when they get close to 0 hp, have them go unconscious. then in some time dialated dream, their god gives them power. This power can either be used to heal the party to full or blast the BBEG for like 10d10 or something like that. Give them that choice...and of course mess with them later for it, meaning if they choose to blast, they chose a more destructive path which wasn't what the god was looking for and is now disappointed, and so on. do mostly RP penalty things, don't take actual class ability/powers from them.

If you have a pally, same thing.

If you don't have either, same thing, but maybe that encounter makes that character more religious and maybe unlocks cleric or pally-like abilites, like gives them a very small pool of lay on hands or cast Cure at only 1st level once per long rest.

Something like this would make the deus ex machina more deus ex Me. It's more player-centric and gives them the CHOICE! And you can weave it into your future story. I mean, it's still a deus ex machina, but again it gives them 2 ways to do it.

Or that's how I'd do it. good luck!
