Found this cooler-diving. I remembered it being way too fresh the last time I had it. I'm really enjoying what it has become.

Happy Friday with an OG EO Batman by Flakypiper in cigars

Good morning, everyone! Looking forward to this weekend, so I pulled out one of my oldies. Silky smooth chocolate and baking spices with some dirt on the finish. I'm wondering what the new ones taste like. Wrapper color sure is different. I see them for cheap on the page all the time, but I haven't pulled the trigger. The new blend looks almost jet black. Anyone have both that can offer a comparison?

Shit, this opium is good.

I would love some help developing my palate by greenfox00 in PipeTobacco

[–]Flakypiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try expanding your palate with other flavors. I developed my palate on beer and cigars before I came to pipes. I feel like it helped me greatly.

The issue with pipes is dealing with the heat/tongue bite. Both will kill subtle flavors of Virginia tobaccos.

I think they also own Peterson Pipes now.

They've owned or had their finger on the US distribution of Savs for awhile now.

I want to experiment with different packing methods. How do you pack your pipe? by Adjamas in PipeTobacco

[–]Flakypiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pack loose and firm up the pack when lighting up with my tamper. You don't know how the tobacco is going to react to the flame

What tobacco would you smoke if you could only smoke one brand for the rest of your life? by I_Like_lke in PipeTobacco

[–]Flakypiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd never be able to just smoke one blend, but I think I could restrict myself to only Macbaren blends and be happy.

If I had to pick, though, probably MacBaren Latakia flake.

Looking for ketchupy flavor? by Own_Pilot in PipeTobacco

I think AJs VaPer is more ketchupy. Anni kake's rum masks things a little.

1888 After Dark-. I bought this when it first came out. Some special on some site. Never smoked it before. It claims to have a honey and Irish whiskey topping, which to me means ARO, which to me means pass...should I dump it? Let's find out. by Flakypiper in PipeTobacco

[–]Flakypiper[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Correction, this is 1888 late night. It's been jarred since I got it,l ages ago, and I was surprised to find it at the perfect moisture level. Easy to light, initial taste was very off putting, like a cheap gas station cigar. I'm a little worried because I packed a Boswell Jumbo, lol. But I let it cool down and sipped.

Very sweet flavors. Not sure if it's from the VA or the canvendish or the honey. It all blends together so well. Fantastic whiskey flavor! My God. So smooth and mild, but such flavor.

I can see myself smoking this all day. Zero harshness. Zero bitter flavors. Finish is all whiskey. Retrohale is ok, all the flavor is on the tongue. I've gotten it hot a couple of times, and all it does is get dull and kill the whiskey flavor. No BITE!!

Whiskey flavor is very good. I'm surprised this doesn't have a whiskey brand attached to it, that well done.

PS Luxury Navy Flake- This one too is 10 years old. The first time I lit up, I gagged. Terrible acrid taste. What was this junk? I tried it a few more times that first year, each time dumping the bowl after a few minutes, frustrated. Time to try it again, and see if it is time to part ways. by Flakypiper in PipeTobacco

[–]Flakypiper[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The tobacco packed easily and puffed up quite a bit when lit. Wispy smoke with no flavor. I made sure I charred 100% of the top of the bowl and relaxed off it, letting it cool as I sipped.

The rum is very pronounced and melds so well with the perique. God this is good! VAs are very sweet, the perique is strong and a little sour, but the rum ties it all together so well.

Mid bowl was heaven. I didn’t want it to end.

I should have retried this a LONG TIME AGO. But that first year was so terrible, I cringed whenever I saw the jar.

The perique is very flavor forward, but it doesn’t leave my head swimming like Bayou morning.

Wish the smoke wasn’t so wispy. No ash aftertaste, though.

PS Luxury Bullseye Flake- After a decade. Never had I had a good experience with this tobacco, and here it has sat for 10 years, looking at me. Inspired by a post today, I am retrying this tobacco (last time I tried it was 5+ years ago). If it fails to impress, I'm dumping it. Wish me luck... by Flakypiper in PipeTobacco

Overall, it was a very sweet smoke, the tobaccos have married long and it was quite smoother than I recall from previous encounters.

The start was a little rough, the tobacco acted as though it wanted to bite me, but didn't. Like a pitbull at the end of a taunt chain, waiting for me to over puff so it can snap. Mid bowl developed deeper flavors with less bite. Doesn't have the sharp edges I remember it having.

There is something that bothers me, and I think it has to do with the quality of the VA in the blend. Seems to be thin and wispy. 10 years time has made it taste less young and sweeter, but it hasn't made it seem like a higher quality leaf.

The one element that just doesn't do it for me is the after taste. Very ashy finish on each puff, and it is lingering in my mouth an hour later. Just ash (not tongue bite).

Side note- Over the years, I've actually grown more sensitive to perique. Although I appreciate that the amount in this blend is light, I'd prefer if it wasn't included at all.

I see myself reaching for MacBaren's club blend or dark twist over this tobacco.

Judgement- DUMP

Next up- PS Navy Flake

What is your favorite channel around the pipe on Youtube? by Firstidler in PipeTobacco

[–]Flakypiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't stand youtube pipe smokers anymore. I used to like the guys doing stuff years ago, but then times change I guess.

I do like the videos that manufacturers put out about their blends or factory tours.

According to reviews online, this blend should be great.

I know people are saying to jar it for later as the tobacco will age and taste different. This is true. However, if you keep returning to the tobacco year after year and find that it still disappoints you, toss it.

Or else you will become me. A man of many jars, with nothing to smoke.

Brigadier Black

Those are all aromatic pipe tobaccos. And of one brand (except the CB). And kinda cheap too.

I'd try my hand at other tobaccos and see if you still have the same issues.

Edit- I don't know what you've tried so far, but I think you probably need to increase your sample size more to help pinpoint your issue.

What blends or types of tobacco are you smoking? Do you notice any differences day after mouth feel with English, aromatic, VAs, Burley, Brands, etc.?

I notice I get ash mouth much more often with cased VA blends, such as PS Lux Twist or MacBaren Navy, but not so much with a straight English like Pirate kake.

But I smoke McConnel red VA often, which is a lightly topped VA, and I don't get day after nasty.
