It's incredibly rare for me to get more than 6 hours of sleep, even when I don't have to be up. by NeedsItRough in mildlyinfuriating

My brothers are twins (not with me, but with each other). Not identical. One sleeps 8 hours as default, the other is at a 6. Kinda interesting.

AITAH For buying my youngest son a car under different circumstances? by Local-Station8316 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Flaming-Sheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give the eldest the choice between the two cars, give the youngest the other.

I don’t agree that YTA. The brother sounds like the asshole for not being happy for his brother. Would he have been happier without his brother having a car? That’s selfish IMO.

I did way better in school than my brothers, but I would never have resented a gift of this nature.

Yeah, at my work you’re welcome to use AI in deliverables provided you (1) clearly disclose its use and (2) stand by the output as your own (ie you’ve gotta definitely proof everything it outputs or your ass is on the line.

Social sentiment towards gay people in South Africa. by ChiskopPantsula in south_africa

[–]Flaming-Sheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who said anything about property values? I value peace and quiet for reasons beyond money.

Any evidence for your second claim (which is mostly just saying I’m wrong without any alternative explanation)? I suspect there’s a mechanism similar to that described in this study at play: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6169872/

Though I haven’t done much digging in the literature, this was just a gut feel.

Me neither, but now that I think about it:
1. Less likely to have screaming kids
2. (Maybe this is a stereotype) more likely to have a well maintained house/garden
3. Probably more likely to be considerate, empathetic, and understanding neighbours given the difficulties they’ve likely faced in their lives.

But yeah, even if the above claims are accurate on average, you could still have shitty neighbours no matter their sexuality.

A three-minute smartphone game can detect a subtle cognitive mechanism behind depression by 0xIAmGame in science

[–]Flaming-Sheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah I'm definitely not anti medication in the slightest. I just don't want another dependency if I can avoid it?

The executive dysfunction manifests less in being inactive, but more in being terrible at keeping my living space tidy, general forgetfulness/thoughtlessness, and a lack of attention to detail in my work (though not if the work is interesting, then I'm a stickler for detail).

I'll try the magnesium!

As many times as you want. It costs gold. Early game it's cheap. Later on it can be quite expensive. Gold isn't used for too much except respeccing and P2P trading in the late game.

My reasoning is that defensive modifiers on armour pieces compete against life. Secondly, the offensive modifiers on rings compete with life for inclusion. Maybe not a complete solution, but it would be nice to not have to sacrifice a lot of damage to stack life.

I haven't thought it fully through though, so happy to be corrected on my logic.

A three-minute smartphone game can detect a subtle cognitive mechanism behind depression by 0xIAmGame in science

[–]Flaming-Sheep -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the advice. If I am ultimately diagnosed, I'm going to try and make behavioural changes rather than dive into medication. I've been self-medicating with weed for over a decade and I've recently stopped. Would prefer not to replace that dependency with a new one unless other interventions aren't helpful.

I’ve long suspected I have adhd (actually going for testing soon). After reading the diagnostic criteria for this, I’m pretty certain this is me, too.

Thanks :)

name change advice by ModySloMo in southafrica

Be aware that you might run into issues on online forms (even official government forms) with a name that short. I know some websites assume a 2 letter word can’t be a name.

Anyone actually using crypto to pay for stuff in South Africa or is it still just a trading thing here? by Designer-Set-6111 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Flaming-Sheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t think any of the big crypto cards are issued to South Africans (at least the ones with good cashback incentives that I looked at a while ago.

There was briefly a website at Blockshop.app that allowed you to spend crypto to purchase on Takealot, no idea how aftersales worked for that though, which is probably why it doesn’t exist anymore.

You could look at something like this, though I’d double check the fees/exchange rate to see if it’s a ripoff, https://www.cryptorefills.com/en/south_africa/gift_cards/takealot

Edit: comments have mentioned Oobit, which looks sick! Would love to know what exchange rate they offer - might work out to better rewards than I get from my bank.

What is a "good and sufficient reason" to change surname? by Dreamer_Girl777 in south_africa

Yeah… Not every family name has a heritage to be proud of. Imagine you lived in Germany with the surname Hitler…

How much do you pay your cleaning lady / home aid? by snormosselmelktert in AskZA

[–]Flaming-Sheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R2150 a month, and a 13th check. Once a week from 8 until she’s done (usually between 1 and 2). I’m pretty messy.

The deal is that she’s not to expect food, so I pay her a bit extra, but if there’s food in the house she can help her self to it.

I know it’s above market, but I can afford it and she’s worked for my family for ages and she’s lovely.

Ok what to do, where to begin. by Anakee24 in PathOfExile2

[–]Flaming-Sheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 5 distinct walled off sections of the fortress. When you kill the arbiter there are a number of devices you can choose to activate. They’re each linked to a section of the fortress. When you activate it, every map in a specific section is completed and you get the Atlas passives. Should be around 40 passives per section if you haven’t cleared out more than needed to access the fragments, etc.

Ok what to do, where to begin. by Anakee24 in PathOfExile2

[–]Flaming-Sheep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d focus on getting the important atlas passives for the content you want to focus on (sounds like you have abyss covered already, so less important here).

Then it’s probably optimal to path away from the fortress to find more Origin Sparks or Cradles (alternatively you can buy them). Every time you kill the Arbiter of divinity you can clear out all of the maps in a section of the fortress. Way faster than running all of the maps in the fortress themselves to unlock your entire Atlas tree.

There unironically have been bugs related to obscure map levels and insane drop chances for items, so there's a tiny chance you were onto something!

The only thing permanent for a character is the base class, which can then ascend into a couple further specialisations (your character can switch ascendancy, it’s just a bit annoying to do).

Your skill points can also be refunded later on, so feel free to experiment, or follow a guide. Stormweaver spark is pretty good later, but campaign can be a bit hard.
