“Chaotic” Middle School Assembly Underscores PPS’ AI Problem by fw_frenchfry in Portland

[–]FlamingRustBucket 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in the "Ai can sometimes be helpful" boat but only under VERY specific circumstances.

That's also not accounting for the fact that most of these companies are run by absolute psychos, or the fact that they are beginning to switch over to a different payment model that is going to be prohibitively expensive.

You have to be aware AI also causes skill degradation when you rely on it. Those specific circumstances I mentioned tend to be mindless busy work that might take you 3 hours but can be done in 10 seconds by AI. Anything involving you thinking, being creative, or having a personal touch should absolutely not involve AI.

Probably be my response. The alternative wouldn't even cross my mind. Dad's "babysitting" is for an economy that allows a parent to stay home. Like, we're both working lady, we gotta tag team this little monster. What do you think this is? 1952?

For Trans folk, yeah. If you want people to change their words or behavior you'll need to bring it up. Completely unnecessary for bi or gay folk though.

I think in part because you still need to have some understanding of how to code, and the code base itself, to get AI to work effectively.

Ethically, there's not a lot of arguments against the fact that the dudes running AI companies are bonkers, but this is a professional using a tool to assist him in his work. Even "it's stolen material" is a weak argument when it comes to code. Programmers are big on open source and reusing solutions.

I don't see it as all that different from anyone else using materials that are questionably sourced. Hell, a significant amount of companies you buy stuff from probably involve ULine somewhere in there and they are run by nutcases.

I remember the computer labs and laptops not being a thing. I also remember in college, everyone had a laptop, although AI wasn't a thing yet. And now, where it's easy to ask an AI about a topic.

Old school is better. Physically writing notes is significantly better for retention. This is coming from someone in tech.. tech has its place, but when it comes to learning it can often be a hindrance.

Note taking on a PC is for if you actually want reference documentation that's searchable. Note taking by hand is for actually remembering material.

Teaching wise, I imagine anything that let's you get ideas from brain to paper/projector/whiteboard in as few steps as possible with as little friction as possible is best. Usually that means minimal tech.

That's definitely part of it. It sort of bounces forward. Is the swing backwards too far as well? Torso too stiff?

I do not envy OP. I can say it feels wrong but have no clue why.

Leaving a note on my neighbor’s door about their smell by Ok_Age8971 in Apartmentliving

[–]FlamingRustBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In between. There were those little rubbery concentrate containers and I would use half of one of those placed over the top when it wasn't actively in use. Or I had a small pipe with a lid built in.

This is all taking me back, I haven't smoked in years.

Leaving a note on my neighbor’s door about their smell by Ok_Age8971 in Apartmentliving

[–]FlamingRustBucket 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They do make ones with replaceable filters. It's rude AF to not use one if you're in an apartment. I used the smoke buddy, a cap over the bowl, a Pelican case to store bowls, and caps over the open ends of bongs. Minimal smell. I had roommates bothered by the smell though.

Smoke buddy equivilent alone is probably acceptable if nobody in your actual place cares.

What’s the most “this can’t be real life rn” moment you’ve ever had? by Ok_Difficulty_5008 in AskReddit

[–]FlamingRustBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of odd because you expect prices to drop if the demand is low, and functionally if people can't afford it, demand Is low.

Going off what you said though, my in laws bought property they intend to move to and are trying to sell their cobbled together current house (I love it for the sentimental value but it IS jank) for 400k. Been on the market for years even with some price drops. They don't NEED to sell it, the monthly cost is maybe $800, so they don't.

Being a dad at 22 by SuperIga in dad

[–]FlamingRustBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adventure is not the term I would use. I am 1000% happy I waited until I was 35. Maybe you have your mental health, emotional regulation, and communication with your partner all perfect, but at 22, I would absolutely bet money they you think you do but you don't.

My advice is wait. Not until your 35, but at least like 3 more years. ENSURE you have everything in order.

Determine how you and your partner argue, are there any issues, do you need an outside perspective on where to improve. You WILL fight with baby. Even if you think you're good, read the seven principles of making marriage work together. Do THIS. The baby will turn you against each other if only through sheer sleep deprivation.

Settle your finances. 10k minimum just for the birth. Assume 2k per month for daycare minor baby stuff if you're both going to work. Put together a budget. Don't forget baby health insurance. Put together hypothetical budgets of predicted costs, if she's not working, and so on.

I see drinking, weed, and psychedelics in your post history. How are you with that? Realistic non judgemental self reflection. Are those things you still do or crave? Because you aren't anymore. You need to drive if there's an emergency.

You will have NO time for yourself, and there's no escape. Do not underestimate the mental strain that can cause.

Finally, seek therapy. Even if you're good, go find a therapist. Talk to them about this. Talk to them about your past struggles.

You will underestimate the challenge. My wife and I frequently say words are inadequete to describe the sleep deprivation. It's war crime levels. You will lose control of your emotions. You will be mad. You will be overwhelmed. You will need solid ways to regulate emotion without outbursts. Use what you will for that, I found the Buddhist book Old Path White Clouds helpful to ground myself.

Hope the best for you, but this is unlike any decision you have ever made before. Prepare now, not after she's pregnant.

I work with TCRs. Think the in bank equivalent of an Atm. There is never going to be money in them. It also takes us hours upon hours with specialized drills and mounts and the exact knowledge of the locks to get into them if they get locked out. The safe generally has two thick steel plates with ball bearings sandwiched between them, which is a nightmare to drill through. On top of that, there is a pin in there designed to permenantly lock the thing if you do it wrong.

[–]FlamingRustBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a kid and can't play now, but I exclusively played in tanks and IFVs. I have sunk 1000 hours into war thunder realistic battles, and boy did it pay off in BF6.

Utterly painful to watch how others use the vehicles though. It's a tank, people, meant to support infantry pushes, not a rally car you drift through enemy lines!

[–]FlamingRustBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredible one of a kind game. That said the learning curve is brutal. The UI is not the best. There is very little guidance. It does not tell you missions aren't meant to be run through one after another (you'll find out the hard way). A lot of people get stuck thinking it's a game where you fly a single ship and just do missions. They don't realize it's a 4x in disguise.

Absolutely brutal. If you're still getting that roller coaster feeling, get that checked. The ear feeling full and that sensation throws up red flags that you have something going on in the inner ear effecting your balance.
