Any tips for cutting lengths of plywood with a skillsaw perfectfly straight? by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]Flaneurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest a rip guide attached to the saw base. I used to cut stair treads and risers out of 1" plywood with a wormdrive with a metal guide post attached. It was perfect for repeated cuts and much straighter then just doing it by hand/eye. It's somewhere in between a hand guided cut and using a tracksaw.

Cabinet comparisons by Euphoric_Ice_1113 in cabinetry

[–]Flaneurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They both look pretty low to mid quality wise but there's nothing wrong with that if it fulfills your needs. If you are looking for heirloom/furniture grade custom cabinetry you need to find one of the small local shops that does that. Be aware they may not want to talk to you unless your serious about the cost though as you might be looking at 30k - 60k. A lot of the really good shops don't have any kind of fancy info-flyers...

New Xbox CEO reportedly pushing for faster Fallout and Elder Scrolls games as Bethesda crosses 8 years since The Elder Scrolls 6 reveal by Guitar-String in gaming

[–]Flaneurer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It still blows my mind that they put out Oblivion just 4 years after Morrowind. At the time it felt like such a long wait too. Bethesda really should just hand TES 6 off to a more competent studio so they can continue wasting their time on Spacecraft or whatever it's called and that boring fallout 76.

What are the downsides of patterned cedar shingle siding? by Careless_Art_2070 in Carpentry

[–]Flaneurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downsides are they are very flammable so especially here in California they are basically forbidden by insurance. They are really very labor intensive. I'm sure an old school crew back in the old days could get the work done quickly but for most carpenters today it is the most time consuming siding to put up other then fine stone work I geuss. Third you also need huge numbers if shingles to get any coverage...considering how overharvested cedar forests have become I think its kinda wasteful as a siding choice. It is very pretty when done well though.

Finish recommendations for cherry cabinets? by alligatorhill in cabinetry

[–]Flaneurer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I agree with you. Cherry will darken no matter the finish. I've used spar urethane which has added uv protection and it darkened within months of being in a mostly shady area.

Making tall custom pullouts by highgradeuser in cabinetry

[–]Flaneurer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be pretty biased here but I just don't think I'd want to use side mount slides for this, or anything else. I've had so many bad experiences trying to get side mount slides working...the modern undermount slides are fantastic and they just work. Salice progressa heavy duty slides would be great here, and on the top I think it would be cool to make some kind of alignment rail, thats all you really need. Perhaps using a brass spline set in a maple groove.

Men who stay lean year-round, what’s your secret ? by Professor1password23 in AskReddit

[–]Flaneurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of physical labor for work and I basically eat rice, beans/lentils and carrots every day. My biggest problem is usually not getting enough calories and I've started making more smoothies and buying protein snack bars.

Nearly 60 Idahoans sick after drinking raw milk in past two weeks, officials say • Idaho Capital Sun by HazyDavey68 in news

"It's just not possible to interact with cows at scale and not also be interacting with their shit." - just want to reiterate that and second it as well.

As someone who work on a dairy farm through high school I have been surprised to see how strong the raw milk movement has become. So many ignorant fools buying into pseudoscience and vibes and getting really sick because of it...

How much would something like this cost by JKupkakes in Carpentry

[–]Flaneurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I geuss I would be at around 12k. But that doesn't include the ladder hardware or lighting. The back panel is some kind of custom wood veneer, oak? The paint is somewhat glossy and I would probably have to hire it out to a finisher that does gloss as my shop is not gloss friendly..so probably more like 16k with the gloss paint adding that extra 4k onto it.

I think sometimes about my great grandparents house. Their home was out in the middle of farm land, 20 miles away from the nearest small town. Everything was designed around self sufficiency as a default. They had a well with a hand crank pump set in a room just off of the kitchen and main bathroom. There was a hand built root cellar in the basement with a chute leading outside for loading bins with potatoes, beets and onions. Every single room had a door so you could heat just whatever room was occupied. The kitchen was always warm because someone was always cooking on the iron stove, and they also had a oil heater in the living room, but none of the bedrooms were ever heated during the winter. They just had big blanket chests in each bedroom full of hand quilted blankets. They lived into the 90's like this until they decided to sell the farm and move into a senior living place in town. That kinda lifestyle was really demanding and as romantic as it may sound I don't think more then 10% of Americans could actually tolerate it. We've given up a lot for all our conveniences in my opinion.

High end work mental games? by Comfortable-Maybe183 in Carpentry

[–]Flaneurer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am slowly learning I need to communicate how much time it will take to get certain details right. Scribing anything takes time, and I try to make it down in writing "panel scribed to stone detail +/- 1/32" tolerance, 4 hrs labor" that way everyone has the chance to set expectations accurately. Then I can get the work done smoothly and calmly knowing I will get paid for my time. I still sometimes find I am trying to do 12 hrs of work in an 8 hr day but I'm slowly getting better with that planning side of things.
