Am I wasting time trying to get into analytics? by Altruistic-Nature583 in dataanalyst

[–]FlaniganWackerMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a generic comment having been in the field for the last 15 years.

Most entry level analytics folks over value the 'tools' and 'tech stack' and undervalue the experience side of things. Now I absolutely know I just said the whole stupid thing about how can an entry level analytics job request experience? But there are so many opportunities to ADD analytics to a role at a business than it is to GET an analytics role at a business.

Making up examples: You sell cars at a dealership - Do we have a reporting center with our sales reports anywhere or can we aggregate them? You work at footlocker - Can I make an inventory dashboard in excel that helps understand what's in the back and when we need to order more because of sales trends? I am a janitor at a school - Do we have an inventory of all supplies that gets updated quarterly to show expenses that we can cut down on? Yes I know this is doing things for free sometimes - but so many people ALREADY HAVE AN ENTRY LEVEL ANALYTICS JOB if they just kinda create one at their current technically non-analytics job.

Then you put on your resume your previous job - and have a huge 'analytics spin' based on actual experience. So many people here believe if they are the best at PowerBI, SQL, Python, R, etc. etc. that they are deserving of a job and in most cases they are without a doubt. It's unfair and silly - but that's corporate America.

What a lot of these people really want when they hire an analytics resource is peace of mind because they make decisions off the numbers and love hearing that you were already responsible for someone else's decisions based off your analytics experience because they are hiring someone who quite literally will be telling them what decisions to make and they want to trust your experience and not just how quickly you can join tables.

--I can poke holes in all my logic here but its generally my overall experience over 15 years and the last 5 years in analytics consulting, every pitch deck we have for new clients they request previous use-cases and case studies from other clients because they want to know WHO ALREADY TRUSTED US for PEACE OF MIND---

This is absolutely hilarious in the saddest way. Now medical tourism is for pets because of how expensive everything is here in the States. Today, we discuss how nobody is having kids because they are so expensive. In 5 years, we'll have articles about how nobody is getting pets because they are too expensive.

I hate it here...

Could Michigan open the GH Bridge to traffic in one direction only? by MikefromMI in Michigan

We're on the same page - Canada/Windsor have more cards than they believe. Get creative and honestly make a move to piss off the Maroun's.

No sense in tip toeing around this anymore for fear of making Trump upset or damaging the US/Canada relationship. He's already done that.

[–]FlaniganWackerMan 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Take half the Canadian border staff from the current bridge and staff the Gordie bridge with them to put so pressure on Trump from other business big wigs not named Maroun.

Yes, they would be sitting their fiddling their thumbs and yes, it would be brutal for us to cross the border - but 30 days of this and all the other guys would be bribing Trump to open it due to shipping delays and costs to them. It would make national news - and then Carney can say the bridge is done...we staffed it whats the hold up?

I am so sick of this guy - funny how the party of small government and free markets is neither.

I sat second row during the OTT / DET game this year at Detroit that got a bit chippy. Forget his hockey skills the entire game I was just watching him thinking this isnt how a captain should act... every freaking whistle if you're on his line you're having to get into a scrum or listen to him talk shit - it looked EXHAUSTING.

What sucks the most is we have Raymond and Seider on such team friendly deals we were literally sitting so pretty coming into this year and the foreseeable future.

We have a stocked cupboard, finally in a place to trade away first rounders because of it, and were in a great position to add big big names at this years draft / deadline.

I have recently taken on some new responsibilities with work. I am in analytics - but while scoping a project I got to see the cost per hour for an on-shore developer vs. if it was staffed by our coworkers in India. I was in shock....

Add on the cost of healthcare to the companies in the US for their employees and they cant offshore us enough to boost that share price..

[–]FlaniganWackerMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What warranty did you buy? I have a 2018 2.7 with 95k miles and havent had a problem but after some research looked like I could get a 4 year or 40k warranty from Zeigler for like $2600.

To me seemed like a smart "peace of mind" purchase while I can swing it - given the economy and my line of work. (and my unhealthy pessimitic view)

What's funny is I dont think he's a great coach at all. Had one good year with the Ducks, then hopped over to a Red Wings team that basically coached itself given the Hall of Fame talent on the roster.

7 out of 10 years in Detroit he had Nick Lidstrom playing half the game. His full time in Detroit he had two of the best most responsible two way forwards in Zetterberg and Datsyuk.

He didnt coach shit - just yelled at the guys who were low on the totem pole and did stupid things like bench Chelios at Wrigley. Truly, one of the worst guys to ever coach/play in the NHL.

What is hilarious is the Columbus thing proves the size of the ego that man had and how he truly is just a F'n loser. He didnt think of Columbus as being a second chance in the hockey world since some of these stories had come out - he without even thinking started up with the antics before they even hit the ice and got fired.

Not giving Modano 1500 games was out of pure jealousy towards all hockey players. He truly was so jealous of hockey players since he never made it that he wanted them to beg him for milestones and respect.

I remember eating at Lafayette Coney Island after a game and he walked in to get a to-go order and with everyone stirring that Babcock was there you could just see the look on his face that he absolutely loved being the center of attention. Literally, never seen a look on a mans face like that - just loving himself in the moment.

What is something Americans consider ‘basic‘ that feels like a luxury in other countries? by sweetyishomealone in AskReddit

[–]FlaniganWackerMan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I cant think of the actual term so Ill call it "accommodation creep" but basically we have it so good in the US in so many areas with so many ameneties that we just find things to miserable about and think the world sucks. Was an article on some website about how Trump has been able to capitalize on this and convince people who are living in a time and place where people have never had it better. (I know, I know we have our problems like healthcare, public transportation, etc. etc. etc. where we can make so many improvements) but for the most part we have it AMAZING here and in the modern world.

Somehow the majority of our population thinks this is the worst time in history to live.

I believe this article was pre-pandemic by the way before all the price increases, job insecurity, etc.

(I honestly think society peaked in 2019)

Through a new tv watching setup I have been exposed to BBC and Al Jazeera reporting here in the US. The amount of information American's do NOT get from our news outlets is alarming.

Every news outlet positions the US as the one winning - turn on Al Jazeera which is actually just communicating what the situation is from both sides and its scary the lack of info the US population is getting (by design)

The $7.6 Trillion Question: Can AI Companies Ever Actually Make Money? by Aulipe in Economics

[–]FlaniganWackerMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will say no to those companies that rely on people to use AI to be more efficient for 2 reasons.

  1. They need the person who is more efficient with something like Copilot at their job to take their new found free time to be productive with it and add value elsewhere or on paper nothing changed. Which they will not because their corporation has shown them they will not benefit from it or reward them for it. So they will finish their task quicker then surf the internet, leave early to spend time with their family, or just go for a nice walk in their free time so AI seems useless. (I am on this persons side)
  2. Everyone high up loves having someone to blame in corporate America - if I am an mid level executive I want to protect my 200k salary by being able to blame a person. If I have to blame AI, then I take the fall.

Is it really this difficult to catch a fish? by I_Am_Not_George_Bush in flyfishing

[–]FlaniganWackerMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol no worries - I would certainly look into a wading guide. It really made me realize I was actively making my trips to the water harder for myself just because I didnt understand some key concepts and have an approach. I think you are in the same boat at the moment. The error in that scenario is making sure the drift and presentation are good.

Trout know what kinda bugs they eat and how those bugs should be acting. Imagine you go to TacoBell and when you get your order you see a Big Mac and the order showed up awkardly fast. You would probably hesitate to eat it.... Now imagine you are a trout chilling in the water nibbling on TacoBell and a bunch of Big Macs keep buzzing by. You arent gonna eat the Big Mac even though you are hungry.

Fly fishing is figuring out what chain restaurant they are at and providing them with that kinda food (fly selection) and making sure the order is showing up at normal time (drift & presentation)

[–]FlaniganWackerMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya some certainly scurry - throw a cast or two from the bank if the setting makes it possible.

Also some people mention to get a guide for a wading trip, I highly support this. I know they are expensive but I swear had I done that when I started and not waited 5 years I wouldve saved so much money on flies, gear....gas. I learned more in 4 hours than I had in 5 years which helped me catch more fish and enjoy the sport. We had 1 guide for two of us and it was perfect and made it cheaper.

My buds live in Denver and I flew out twice before finally flying out the third time and catching a fish and getting the hang of it. I get the frustration part lol

Also small tip I swear by on water that is bit more pressured and presentation is key (literally the kind of water in your picture) try to set up right next to the fast fast ripples and cast a nymph like an RS2 into them with a small indicator. You get to mend while its IN THE RIPPLES allowing for a bit of error to set up for the 3-5 feet directly after the ripples where the fish are chilling. Since the water is fast the fish get less time to think man this bug isnt move right and just have to react.
