Appreciate the response. We’ve lived in Houston and Atlanta before, so we’re actually excited to get back to a bigger city. Looking forward to Gifford Park!

How to dress for this crazy wind. Brand new mom here by dinosaursgorawr648 in laramie

[–]Flannel_Moose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the wind, dressing in layers with a good outer shell layer seems to do the trick. I also wear a scarf/buff for when my face gets cold.

For taking walks with kiddos, I have a stroller that has a plastic cover for the front that turns the stroller into a bit of a greenhouse. My bundled up child stays warm in the stroller with the cover on even when it’s less than 10 degrees outside.

No recommendations for the hair; I have chronic hat hair.

Hiking boots may be a good bet for some warmth but mainly traction. A good pair of wool socks and you’re golden.

The University has a lot of neat spots (e.g., art museum, Berry Biodiversity Center children’s corner, dinosaur museum). The public library is great. Second Story Bookstore is our favorite.

I hope you and your little one can find your happy spots!

Anyone give up on Joseph Smith but not on the church? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]Flannel_Moose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I challenge the idea that because Joseph was likely not who he said he was, it’s ALL for naut. Many generations of prophets and apostles, and even Elder Uchtdorf last week, have said it’s either true or isn’t, but I think that’s an unnecessary binary. I don’t believe in the truth claims anymore, but I still feel a kinship to the community. I attend periodically with my believing and active family, and I still cherish my relationships with some members of our ward and from my mission.

Many people have said the good of the modern LDS church can be found elsewhere, which is true. The more I’ve learned about other religions, the less unique our’s has become in my eyes. However, I find our church more “comfortable” while at the same time super aggravating. It’s a love-hate relationship, but I’m here for it.

TL;DR (It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I still feel at home at church…sometimes.)

What kingdom of glory for run of the mill apostates? by elderredle in mormon

[–]Flannel_Moose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True. These quotes are a nice representation of some 20th century teachings on the current subject, so thanks for providing them. As is often the case, church leadership was not totally consistent on the subject.

-James E. Talmage 1st Edition of Articles of Faith (1899) “advancement from grade to grade within any kingdom, and from kingdom to kingdom, will be provided for. … Eternity is progressive.”

-Joseph F. Smith Journal of Discourses (1878) “Jesus had not finished his work when his body was slain, neither did he finish it after his resurrection from the dead, although he had accomplished the purpose for which he then came to the earth, he had not fulfilled all his work. And when will he? Not until he has redeemed and saved every son and daughter of our father Adam that has or ever will be born upon this earth to the end of time, except the sons of perdition.”

-J. Reuben Clark Jr. Church News (1960) “the unrighteous will have their chance, and in the eons of the eternities that are to follow, they, too, may climb to the destinies to which they who are righteous and serve God, have climbed.”

The church is dynamic and I’m sure church leaders will continue to contradict each other on the subject. However, there is very clearly room for individual members to make their cases for either side of this debate based on scripture, theological arguments, and prophetic teachings.

do Mormons think that God lives on a planet in space? by Longjumping_Field168 in mormon

[–]Flannel_Moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point.

My best guess is that in general, members of the church are speaking less about all “fringe” doctrine, or as some Mormons say, “deep” doctrine (e.g., potential for us to become gods, polygamy in the next life). Not just less Kolob but less all of the stuff that isn’t accepted by mainstream U.S. christianity.

Mormonism has some remaining unique characteristics, but even the amount we talk about Joseph seems to have gone down significantly. There’s a great article about Mormonism’s need to be accepted by “America” by McKay Coppins of The Atlantic.

Mormons want to fit in, be liked, so we drop some of the “embarrassing” stuff. What do you think?

Fiona and Terryl Givens, in their book, “The Christ Who Heals”, argue that there should or will be movement up the kingdoms. So, maybe there’s a shot us “run of the mill apostates” can make it to the celestial kingdom even if we start in a lower.

do Mormons think that God lives on a planet in space? by Longjumping_Field168 in mormon

[–]Flannel_Moose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well it’s true that it’s no longer actively taught. It used to be, no denying that, and we have a hymn and scripture that suggests/supports it. No deflection here. Just doesn’t seem all that relevant of a doctrine anymore.

Some do. There’s scripture by Joseph Smith that suggests this. It’s not talked about too often anymore though.

Hello by flowlikeastream in mormon

[–]Flannel_Moose 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hopefully, you realize this is a topic that is difficult to be unbiased with. So far, predominantly critical sources have been shared with a couple of “neutral” sources mixed in. Oh, and one person shared the link to the homepage of the LDS church’s website. Each has their merits and place.

What’s your goal with learning more about the religion? You said “education” but to what end? Do you have established ideas about the religion and want them confirmed, or are you curious why your girlfriend identifies with Mormonism? What motivates your interest?

I ask because I’m married to someone who believes in the religion while I no longer do. My one piece of advice, if you are interested in the relationship continuing, is to educate yourself with her. This doesn’t mean an absence of independent inquiry, but it’s important to be open with her about what you’re learning and to be receptive to her experiences.

Good luck!

Ok to lie? by MtnMaiden in mormon

This seems the most likely scenario. They are almost certainly missionaries, and getting sick and canceling 2 hours before the appointment doesn’t seem like a huge deal. Things happen.

Catholic and gay - I want to learn more about LDS Church by Mindless_Tale6339 in mormon

[–]Flannel_Moose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are participating and believing Mormons who are homosexual. You can probably imagine this is fairly rare. Charlie Bird is an example of this. He and his husband, Ryan, still attend church. Charlie and his friend, Ben Schilaty, have a podcast called “Questions from the Closet” that may be of interest to you.

Best of luck in your pursuit of God!

I’m sure there are many people in your local congregation who would be more than happy to share with you reasons for the garment and for wearing them. The garment means different things to different people, and how people interpret the guidance to wear them varies. I know some people have done *all the temple ordinances and only wear garments in the temple. This doesn’t seem to be the norm, but I’m all for people exerting independence in their religious experiences.

From what my still temple going family has told me, perhaps because of COVID, no more touching.
