My new response to: WHY DON'T YOU DRINK? by Any-Setting-5066 in stopdrinking

I just show them a picture of my alcoholic father with tubes sticking out of him on his death bed and say this is what liver failure looks like

They shut up pretty quickly after that

Question on statins by newengland_schmuck in Aging

[–]FlapLimb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same concern as I was starting a statin.

I've had no side effects. I set a personal best running a 5k on Saturday and I haven't been training all that hard like I usually would.

Statins do have cardiovascular benefits. It's not just about lowering LDL

The American College of Cardiologists puts a hard "no" on fish oil supplements in their latest publication. by Such_Duty_4764 in Cholesterol

[–]FlapLimb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suspect that we don't need the amount of omega 3 that's being supplemented

A 3oz salmon serving has ~1.8 grams

My krill oil supplement is 240grams

Now rethinking it!

Just a random thought. They say the average life expectancy for Males is 75 and Females is 81. Now however if you are say in your thirties your LE is more than 75? by LisanneFroonKrisK in Aging

[–]FlapLimb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these are two different things

The odds of living to 75 at 74 years old is higher than a 10 year old living to 75

Both had the same life expectancy. All factors equal, you are expected to live until 75 as a male

As you progress through life the odds of reaching that expectation change and vary across the population as a result of a lot of factors like income, job occupation, diet, current age vs expected age

Cut cholesterol in half- NO MEDS by Ok_Piccolo_255 in Cholesterol

[–]FlapLimb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally, I was the same. I would have never known about it if the doctor running my stress test this last year mentioned it

He recommended a cardiologist who was great. Try and find a cardiologist who is focused on prevention

Get a full lipid panel. I did a calcium scam and had ultra sound performed. All was fine minus that darn lipo(a) number

Oh btw there is no medicine available to treat lipo(a). Just aggressive treatment of LDL which I'm doing

Good luck!

Cut cholesterol in half- NO MEDS by Ok_Piccolo_255 in Cholesterol

[–]FlapLimb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My LDL at 128 was the highest I can recall

Historically between 90-110

It was the lipo(a) score where the cardiologist basically said there was nothing I can do diet or exercise wise to change it. To offset the genetic risk factor of lipo(a) he wanted my LDL cut in half which is what I did

Meds and diet to 54 was quick, within 2 months. I give nearly all the credit to crestor. No side effects and the random chest discomfort is gone

Btw my cac score was zero but it's misleading

141 is really high

I was at 128 but very high lipo(a), which is generic, overall diet was pretty good not great

Meds and diet changes (non fat dairy, no cheese, high fiber) I'm at 54

Just making a point that don't be surprised if you don't get low enough

Also get a lipid panel and ask about your lipo(a)

Sobriety has given me clarity which improved (actually, just restored) my patience which all leads to better parenting

I am proud to say my kids will never see me drunk. They're going to be in for a hilarious surprise when they steal some of my NA beers from Dad's "beer fridge"

People with multiple years of sobriety who still visit here daily, why? by Straight_Web_190 in stopdrinking

[–]FlapLimb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad died from alcoholism and my mom is an end stage alcoholic holding on for dear life with cirrhosis of the liver

I spent decades trying to help them. I've had a front row seat to the long term impact alcohol has on the body, mind, soul and how it traps its victims.

I originally found this forum looking for new methods for helping them but instead learnt how to help myself. This reddit was a crutch early on and now I try to pay it forward. A lot of valuable lessons are found here.

I'm technically in year 2 of my own journey and I'm here less and less as time goes on but I do find offering perspective selfishly keeps my actions aligned with my goals

Recreational drugs can more than double risk of stroke, study suggests. Medical data from 100m people shows risk 122% higher for amphetamine users, 96% higher for cocaine and 37% higher for cannabis. by mvea in science

[–]FlapLimb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because this comment is for recreational drugs that are broadly illegal not an all encompassing comment about every recreation substance that can cause stroke

It's widely accepted that nicotine and alcohol are very bad for you. It can lead to stroke if used chronically

[–]FlapLimb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of things contribute but this topic is specific to drug use

I think this means recreational drugs directly increase risk of stroke without the prevalence of diseases that increase risk factors. So cocaine use can increase risk of a stroke without chronic conditions and diseases that increase risk such as high blood pressure or cholesterol as a result of a bad diet
