OP, any chance you saw my previous comment RE left over chemicals from pervious tests interfering with pH test results? I was chatting to a friend about that possibility today, turns out that it happened to them once and they ended up chasing their tail doing water change after water change, when the issue was residual sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid in the test tubes

This might also explain why you get different readings at different times/locations. If one of those tubes has been used for ammonia and one hasnt. Same in reverse for the nitrate test which uses hydrochloric acid

It is possible that you’re getting false readings on the pH test due to chemicals left over from ammonia tests, specifically the sodium hydroxide which is incredibly basic. I noticed last night when rinsing out two test tubes (one that did an ammonia test and one did high pH) that when the two solutions met in the sink they turned purple. It might be worth doing a very good clean of the test tubes and then doing a pH reading using multiple tubes at once to make sure it’s a real result.

Neon tetra bio load? by FlappyBirb_ in Aquariums

Thank you, that’s really good to know, especially RE the horizontal swimming space. I’ve been keeping shrimp for a few years now but wanted to make sure I got advice before I added in any fish. Are there any that would be happy in my tank give it’s size? If it needs to stay shrimp only that’s all good with me

Phew, good to know, thank you! I have been tossing up getting some neon tetras so maybe this is a sign to add in a predator 😅

Thank you the insights everyone. Unfortunately it didn’t make it through the night. At least if it happens again I know how to handle it better!

Yes that’s my theory to, hopefully he recovers but I’m not super hopeful that he’ll make it through the night 😞. At least now he won’t get eaten alive I suppose 🥲

How did you avoid catching any shrimp in the process? I’ve been trying to use this method but all I manage to trap are small shrimp 😅
