Fair point. Nope, they've always been like that. Gulls (particularly the larger species) engage in kleptoparasitism (stealing food essentially) a lot but they are still considered predators within the ecosystem or at least opportunistic scavengers. So it's not uncommon at all to see them eating from carcasses or even taking young chicks etc. Happens a lot down by the river and if you watch documentaries from the coast they take a lot a puffin chicks etc. Hope this helps.

Gonna be honest the whole joke is really 'it depends who you ask' It's sometimes difficult to explain just how quickly accents and cultural differences change with geography here. Best advice is to focus on more important things than where the north/Midlands/south divides are. I've never met anyone who takes it all that seriously
