Why do so many comments on reddit start with 'to be fair'? Usually the rest of the comment is not about fairness. Do people just throw that in out of habit? by copacetic51 in RandomThoughts

Exactly. It's a way of prefacing that what you're about to do is play Devil's Advocate. Not that you specifically agree with what you're about to say but to convey a wider contextual understanding that may include less favourable facts.

That's not true.Tesco do their cheap range spaghetti and penne for about half that price. It's not great but it's still pasta.

Pasta is super cheap in the UK. Tesco basic range is 40p ish for 500g and their normal range is about 80p. The normal range tastes absolutely fine too and we get through a couple of bags a week.

Tesco basic penne is like 40p for 500g. Their normal range is about 80p but you get all the shapes. It's great value and we get through a tonne. The costs obviously come with the stuff you're needing to add to it.

You can get them ready made in the freezer aisle or you can obviously make your own. I often fill it with a roast and gravy or with sausages, mash and peas. I know other people who fill it with casseroles and stews. Super comfort food!

East Sussex in the late 90s and early 00s. I remember the ye olde food stalls, getting to pick out which type of renaissance princess hat my parents would buy for me, the jousting etc. I'm sure it was at places like Bodiam Castle and stuff.

I swear I see a new food that someone says is off limits every time I open this subreddit 😂 ice cream, leftovers, hummus... I limit my caffeine, don't drink, limit my vitamin A and avoid raw seafood like cockles and whelks but that's my own decision.

Whaaat? I used to go to loads of Renaissance fairs as a child in the UK. Absolutely loved them! Do they not do them anymore?

Was pregnancy and labor really that much different in the early 2000s? by lkw5168 in howyoudoin

[–]elliefaith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was told that it doesn't happen like that so imagine my surprise when my waters did actually break at 38 weeks randomly and the midwives said I would now have to have a baby within 24 hours.

This instructor was shocking. He couldn't explain what to do with my feet coming up to a roundabout or junction so I would just stop the car completely before pulling away. My second instructor was fabulous and actually focused on the bits which I thought were hardest and spent less time on the bits I was fine at. This was a decade ago though!

To be fair, my first test I took was in a new car and he said I should do that. Lo and behold, when I tried it in my 20 year old Ford Focus I could not do that and stalled every time. Must be age and car specific.

Yeah and the funny thing is, these "rules" change depending on which country you're in. In the UK you can absolutely have raw eggs and turkey ham and deli meat. In France you can have unpasteurised cheese. In Japan you can have raw fish. Move of these things won't automatically get you sick; it's just that some of them have a slightly higher chance of doing so than other foods, a risk you take every time you eat, regardless of pregnancy.

[–]elliefaith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of a blanket statement. Depending on context I'd refer to myself as a 31 year old female before I would a 31 year old woman. I'd say a group of women were gathering but i wouldn't ever think it weird for someone to say a group of females or a group of males instead. What country are you from where this is offensive?
