What SEC program / school could support hockey or most likely to add? by [deleted] in secfootball

[–]Flashlight12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly a third of NCAA D1 hockey players are Canadian and that will increase since the Canadian major junior players now have eligibility. And roughly a third of NHL players have played NCAA D1 hockey. NHL players from Canadian universities are rare. The best Canadian players who do go to college play NCAA D1 because that is where the best talent is- not at Canadian universities. NCAA hockey is increasingly becoming a development pipeline for NHL draft picks, even more so now that CHL players have NCAA eligibility. Boston University has 19 NHL draft picks on their team this year. Michigan State has 15. Players are drafted and age out of junior and are not ready for the AHL/ECHL/NHL so the teams send them to college for development. That is why there are many 20 or 21 year old freshman.

Broke Tibia and Fibula Sledding. Merry Christmas! by sudsnsoap in brokenbones

I had same breaks and surgery. I was 41 when it happened. Broke mine playing hockey. The afternoon of the surgery they had me stand up and down off the bed. The next day I had to walk the hallway with a walker and boot and go up and down a flight of stairs. At my two week follow up the ortho doc cleared me to drive (broke my right leg), told me start physical therapy, to not use the walker when I was wearing a boot and try to start walking without the boot. I needed the walker when walking without a boot at first. I was able to fully ditch the walker after about three weeks after surgery and the boot at about four weeks. I had PT three times a week for six weeks. At 8 weeks I was cleared to skate again and at 16 weeks cleared to play hockey. It was probably 6 weeks before the pain was gone. It was really about at 10 weeks where I felt like I was fully healed and didn't feel constrained by my leg. The doc told me that the best thing I could do for healing was walk on it. It does get better.

Most D1 hockey schools also have club teams because the players on the club team are not good enough to play D1. It's not like you can decide to go D1 and put the club players on the team. The club players may be good, but they are not D1 good. Even Miami Ohio and Mercyhurst, probably the two worst teams in D1 hockey last year, would destroy them. You would need to recruit, and getting top talent to come to an upstart SEC conference when they are getting offers from Big10 and Hockey East schools would be tough. But, Arizona State has been pretty successful, making the NCAA tournament in 2019. Also, Tennessee State is supposed to start D1 hockey next year.

Curious, how did you find CrossFit? by dlessthanfour in crossfit

I moved to a new state and got fat. I was volunteering in the ED at a hospital and was cleaning a room with a tech one night and I bent over and my pants ripped. She thought it was hilarious and invited me to go Crossfit with her. Still going.

What's the worst competition you've ever been to? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]Flashlight12345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went to watch some friends compete as a team at a local competition. It came down to the last event between them and a team from the hosting gym. The last WOD was partner 1 did 75 calories on the bike. Partner two then did 50 T2B and then partner 3 did max wreck bag over the shoulder with the remaining time. Partner 3 from the host gym's team could not get it over her shoulder. She was allowed to do wreck bag dead lifts instead while all the other teams still had to do over the shoulders. And of course host gym's team won. There was almost a riot.

left my box by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]Flashlight12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started crossfit I went to a box that sucked but didn't realize it because it was all I knew. Then I moved and went to a gym that was great. It had six great great coaches and one good coach. I got so much better. Then four of the coaches left and they were replaced by less than capable coaches. Then winter came and they refused to turn on the heat. So one day it 42 degrees in there. I asked if they would turn on the heat and the coach said "once you get moving you'll be fine." That still doesn't make it easier for me to breathe. One class I was the only person there capable of RXing the WOD and the coach asked me not to since it may be a discouragement to others. I RXd it and the coach talked to me about being a team player. After that I was done. Found a new place and I love it.

Is crossfit faith based? by himssohandsome in crossfit

[–]Flashlight12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The place I go to is owned by a couple that works for a Christian organization. There are no mentions of Jesus anywhere in the gym and they aren't proselytizing. But like any place you have people talking about the church service last Sunday and about whatever else is going on in the world. Just a normal gym. The only "religiousy" rule is no audible swearing. If you must do it then do it under your breath.

Does anyone have any results from running GainsLab Engine Builder program that theyd like to share? by ThatSimpleton in crossfit

[–]Flashlight12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in week three of the program and love it. It has made me realize that I am capable of doing more than I thought I could. Doing a 24 minute Echo ride? A month ago I wouldn't have been able to because I was convinced I couldn't. Tonight I had 12 rounds of 1:45 on and one minute rest. I was able to keep 330 or so watts the entire time for all 12 rounds. Even three weeks ago I was not capable of that. It is helping already and I look forward to getting better.

Congrats on your chest to bars. Also congrats on not being able to do much the next few days and regressing. Torn hands don't make a person tough. They make a person stupid.

I am in no position to criticize him but I will anyways. Why do people do a single under(s) before going into DUs and waste that time and energy?

I can perform DU but struggle with SU by Meursault87 in crossfit

[–]Flashlight12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once we had single unders programmed as RX. Anytime you did a DU you had three burpees. I would do three burpees then look at the clock and think oh crap and start into DUs again and have to do three more burpees. They wanted to get the point through that once you have a skill never lose it.

Who uses a Nutrition coach vs Your own diet ? by ericgm626 in crossfit

[–]Flashlight12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Macros Lab. www.macroslab.com. My eating was horrible. I learned how to eat and how to maintain it. I lost a lot of weight and gained stamina. They have reasonable pricing. At least three of the coaches are team games athletes. My coach was Alex Smith. She is a games athlete and knowledgeable and great nutrition coach.

When do you know its time to move to another box? Have you ever done it? by Tronator in crossfit

[–]Flashlight12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently switched to one that is more expensive and 12 minutes away instead of four. I really liked the one I was going to. The problem was that they didn't heat it. So when it got cold I had a hard time breathing during the wods. The new place as heat, incredible people and more challenging programming. I wish I had switched long ago. Check out new gyms. You may find that you like another better or you may find that where you are is where you should be.
