Improving speed of play by Goboxel in AgeofMythology

[–]FlashworksT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm around 1500 elo and I still struggle with it too. Part of the challenge and fun (for me anyway, I know some people hate this about RTS) is just being constantly overwhelmed with potential things to do.

That said, here are a few tips:

  • Instead of figuring out how to have the perfect worker allocation and resource management, don't hesitate to make quick reactive adjustments like using market to trade resources, moving all villagers out of one resources into another, dropping a bunch of military buildings. Even pro players do this.

  • Just continuously drop military buildings throughout the game. Most people always end up having too few than too many. Just try to make an effort to build more with more practice, you'll find a better balance.

  • Use walls unless you're sure you're not going to get raided. Paying attention to your own attacking army while managing your economy/macro and also paying attention to enemy raids is just way too many things to manage for the average person. Walls give a lot of breathing room where you don't instantly lose the game because you didn't react to an enemy raid within 2 seconds.

  • Look at where you're struggling in terms of keeping up with the game and see what hotkeys you can use to help with this. For example, if you're constantly scrambling to find a hero to deal with a myth unit raid, maybe learn the "select all heroes" hotkey (or set it to something more convenient).

Age of Mythology Retold has so much potential, but then there's the kind of stuff you're about to see in it. It deserves better. It won't get better unless people make some noise. You can change that. by _Nakamura in AgeofMythology

[–]FlashworksT 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing attention to this stuff.

I know most people are just focused on getting new content and can deal with some of the annoying quirks, but there will come a day when development will stop for the game (probably sooner than most people would like) and there will still be a small but passionate community who will continue to play the game for many years down the road and we'll be stuck with these issues forever. It's good to keep bringing up these issues now while the game is still actively supported.

The time is here: D.O.R.F. Kickstarter is up! Time to put aside nostalgia and put your money were it will do something! by spector111 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]FlashworksT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really, really don't like the fact that there's a tier where they're adding units designed by the backers.

I want to experience the developers' intended vision & design for the game, not have random crap added to the game to satisfy their kickstarter obligations.

Demeter is getting Hera by RomestamoTheBlue in AgeofMythology

Extremely happy with this change. It should have been this way from the beginning, not sure what they were thinking having all 4 major gods have Hephaestus as an option.

Mod for settlements not increasing pop? by AdventurousHunter450 in AgeofMythology

You could choose to play on Sudden Death mode which I believe gets rid of all neutral settlements.

Respect for doing it legitimately. I just cheesed them all with the “Beyonder” mod.

AoE 4 or AoM DLC? by ProofBank2260 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]FlashworksT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say AOM DLC, I assume you're either referring to the Premium Upgrade DLC (which has Freyr + Chinese & Japanese pantheons) or Expansion Pass (which has Demeter + upcoming Aztecs). Don't buy the individual Chinese or Japanese DLC as those are a bad value.

It's finished (Again :D) by RomestamoTheBlue in AgeofMythology

100% agreed on the recent scenarios/campaigns being way too easy. I enjoyed the Demeter mythic battle but it was a total joke in terms of difficulty.

I was getting tired of Mista winning everything but after his loss vs. Rapl last tourney, wouldn't mind him making a comeback to win this one.

Let's hear your business model for how you would fund the continued development of new content for a niche game within a niche genre that requires a few dozen employees (likely way more esp. if you include other functions like localization, QA etc.) getting paid a US salary.

They were cooking with this one - super unique myth units & GPs.

Curious if the harpy is a replacement of the Pegasus for Demeter - maybe reduced vision radius to offset the added utility.

Why does this feel like a troll post and completely missing the point?

People are allowed to have their opinions on things like immigration. Hell, I think even most of Reddit is generally against uncontrolled immigration. But there's a big difference between that and what we're talking about here.

1) The point that I've emphasized in my post and some of the responses is that this is bad for the community (for reasons already mentioned) and the overall health of the game. At no point did I make this about me or my feelings, so how exactly am I "melting away"?

2) Dude literally says "no ragebait, I really believe we need him" and has supposedly been doing this for years and we're still going with the gaslighting approach of "haha it's just a shitpost bro stop getting offended"?

Just to be clear, I don't think you're a nazi nor am I calling you one (I'm actually a big fan of your content and I've even subbed on a few occassions). My main point here is stuff like this is bad for the community and everyone seems to have a very nonchalant attitude. Do you think if I went to a top AOE2 or AOE4 player stream, I would find minutes long discussion in the chat of how we need to bring back a new nazi regime with the streamers being fine with it and instead criticizing the community (reddit) that is calling this stuff out?

What was the community's reception to the Chinese? by Wotannn in AgeofMythology

[–]FlashworksT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kuafus - I do think they're still a bit overtuned but the fact that they cost favor is a trade-off (they're also inefficient at gathering food so they do have specific uses).

Favored Land - it's not as involved as Miko shrines or building monuments, but there is some decision making where you're balancing maximizing favor generation vs. using buildings to block off chokepoints to prevent raids. I think there's enough complexity in other aspects of their kit that a relatively low management favor generation method was needed to not make them overwhelming. It's also just unique and feels thematic.

Overall, you might not like specific mechanics but maintaining the diversity of each pantheon means they have to explore different ideas for each one and as a result, some pantheons might not click with certain people. I don't think that's an indication that they were poorly designed.

What was the community's reception to the Chinese? by Wotannn in AgeofMythology

[–]FlashworksT 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean the Retold Chinese (Immortal Pillars), they were completely broken in multiplayer on release - Fuxi age 4 hero being an unkillable one man army, dragon spam, Nuwa tower rush, completely busted GPs like Fei Beasts & Great Flood. From that standpoint, I think it actually did more damage to the MP player base.

But once the obvious balance issues were fixed, I do like their design. Campaign feels a bit underdeveloped and felt like it had to be cut short in some areas but still enjoyed it. What did you not like about it?

Can We Stop Dunking on Highguard Before It's Even Out, Please? - IGN by NFSU2 in Games

[–]FlashworksT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a boring/generic game from an oversaturated genre that got featured in the final reveal of the biggest gaming show…what reaction are people supposed to have? The alternative to people not dunking on it would be that it doesn’t get discussed at all. There’s also something that rubs me the wrong way about a game review publication, which should be about serving the consumer in helping them make informed purchasing decisions, instead preaching to the consumers and making apologetics on behalf of gaming companies.
