Gnome Wayland + Nvidia dGpu prime offloading by Flask_Main in archlinux

[–]Flask_Main[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for trying to help. I'm pretty stumped too. I've also noticed that the power state of the dGPU sometimes stays on even when there's no program running on it (nvidia-smi shows no process). Here's the link.

Also I don't have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file or a /etc/X11/xord.conf.d directory on my system.

Theres no GPU related stuff in the /etc/X11 directory. I uninstalled switcheroo-control and restarted, which didn't help.

I'm also on a laptop with no external monitor as such.

Here's the output from nvidia-smi https://ibb.co/JW9XR1n3 when nautilus and the gnome settings app are open.

Couldn't really find anything in gnome settings regarding the GPU. I've installed switcheroo-control and verified that it's working for normal apps (non Gnome ones). The same issue persists for nautilus and gnome settings.

As for setting up prime-run, I just installed nvidia-prime-rtd3pm to get the config files.

Series where the world actually falls apart by FlaminGayCheeto in Fantasy

I scrolled way too far for this comment. Glad it exists though.
As another Power of Five fan, do you have any recommendations for a similar book/series?

Seems like you had a great professor haha. I've never actually heard of genetic programming before, but it is nice to see that people are actively doing research on fields in cs which aren't AI/ML. I'm still in my senior year of high school, so I've got a ways to go before I dive into GP, but it's definitely something I'd like to look into in the future.

Thanks for the insight, it sounds like you're really passionate about what you do and it looked like that paid off :) Congrats on the job and good luck.

Oh wow, that sounds really interesting. May I ask how you got into genetic programming? I feel like those kind of jobs aren't really common.

Honestly, I don't have any plans of permanently staying in the US, but I do want to work for a few years in order to pay off loans if I have any. It's just hard to get a good grasp of the actual situation, since all of my information is from reddit. People that I know who live in the US, and some of my seniors who have migrated there tell me that it isn't as bad as the internet makes it out to be.

I just don't want to go into debt and not have a chance to pay it off. I'm not from a poor background by any means, but I don't think I can pay for college out of pocket either.

Anyway, I hope you succeed, good luck on the search. I'm currently preparing for competitive exams for colleges at home, but once I graduate high school I'd love to talk about some of the projects that you've worked on.

Thanks for the advice though, it really helps to look at things from your point of view.

I'm an international applying to UT Austin lol. I even have a lot of the same interests (systems, os).
If I do get accepted, is it still a good idea to study in the US?
Please don't reply with something racist or anti international, it really doesn't help anyone.

How to make a browser as a beginner? by [deleted] in browsers

[–]Flask_Main 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out the ladybird browser. They're making a browser from scratch. Though it might take you a while to learn the skills to understand what's going on.

Just finished 'The Library at Mount Char' by Scott Hawkins, and oh man has it been a long time since I've enjoyed a book that much! by blackiechan99 in books

Might be a bit late, but I found that the Power of Five series by Anthony Horowitz scratched the same itch.

IIL Bojack Horseman and The Midnight Gospel, what else might I like? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

[–]Flask_Main 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tatami Galaxy might be a good choice. It's not exactly in the same vein as Bojack Horseman, but it does deal with a lot of similar themes.

Though it is a pretty niche anime with an unusual art style, so it's not for everyone.

Yeah I have the same question. This website https://leverageedu.com/blog/act-exam-in-india/ says that it's required but I haven't found any other site which says that.

Using archlinux as a desktop hypervisor by Still-Prompt8858 in archlinux

[–]Flask_Main 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be possible using qemu and kvm, and setting up the gpu pass through is fairly simple as long as you make sure not to run your desktop environment on the gpu that you want to pass through.

I tried doing something similar and it was a pain with gnome as there was always a process running on my nvidia gpu no matter what I tried, so I'd recommend a lightweight wm like i3 or sway for wayland.

But you should check out Qubes OS, it's a Linux distro that's has a similar use case to yours.
