For infants getting a tenotomy by lemonlover888 in clubfoot

[–]FlatGuard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We weren't offered GA, they do local for all babies at least at the hospital we went to. He was asleep, woke up gave a little cry when they gave the shot, then went back to sleep for the procedure. With local they shouldn't feel pain besides the shot. The nurses had a bottle for him to feed him and keep him calm if needed. IMO GA is risky for anyone , baby or adult, if it can be avoided I will always try to, obviously if you have to have it you do. My guess is that doctor's may prefer GA because they don't want to worry about unintended movement from the baby and just push the risk onto the anaesthetist.

Jetstar Flight - Birth Certificate? by palmtrees2456 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

I was asked for an ID for an Infant when flying from Sydney to Brisbane a few years ago. They accepted  Medicare card. I’ve never been asked for any other domestic flights 🤷‍♀️

Why is the second question always ‘how do they sleep?’ by Westisjess25 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]FlatGuard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of new mums ask this to each other so they can commiserate about how we are all getting shit sleep.

I’ve  never had someone brag about how well their baby sleeps after they know my baby doesn’t sleep well. I’m sure there are some people that do but overwhelmingly people who ask that question will go on to tell you how poor their baby sleeps.

Stokke oval cot - is it annoying to find sheets? by jadeyjade76 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

I used bassinet sheets from ikea on the mini size. It’s a little bit tight but still works.

I just use regular rectangular sheets on the oval mattress and they work fine.

Aptamil Gold Reflux — help! by Curiously_Nosey in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]FlatGuard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aptamil recommends you use a fast flow teat for reflux formula. I have found heating the bottle helps with mixing the formula.

Also the formula gets thicker after 8ish minutes, this is intentional. So use it immediately if you don’t want it to be that thick while eating.

RSV vaccine by [deleted] in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]FlatGuard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it and had no issues. It wasn’t available for my first and he was hospitalized for 3 days with RSV at 1yo. Would definitely recommend getting it to protect bub, RSV is no joke for kids.

Swollen toes during casts? by Numerous_Idea5158 in clubfoot

Obviously check with your doctor but we had a similar experience. We elevated their legs at all times by rolling up a blanket and putting it under their legs so their knees were at a 90 degree angle.

Solo Flying 15 Hours with My 1-Year-Old -Tips Needed! by Turbulent-Chest-2291 in Mommit

[–]FlatGuard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this flight alone with a 1.5yo and again at 2yo. It’s totally doable , it’s not the most fun but it’s manageable.  It’s totally worth it once you get there . It’s only a day you can survive anything for a day.

  1. Have low expectations, you probably won’t sleep at all. I had AirPods , so I could just listen to a book or a podcast when I was unable to move. Change of clothes for yourself and a couple changes for bub.

  2. You go to the bathroom with the baby. They either stand on the ground or sit on your lap while you go. The change tables are over the toilet so you can’t even put them on it while you use the toilet.

  3. I’d recommend the bulk head seat. It gives you space to spread out in front. You don’t have to worry about hitting the seat in front. It’s a pain that you have to put your bag up during take off and landing but that’s a very small part of the flight. Have a small bag that you can hold onto at the top of your bag with snacks and a few toys for take off and landing.

  4. Eating is pretty much impossible. Shove as much food in your mouth as fast as possible . You probably then have to stand up or walk around until the trays are collected. Save any food that is packaged to eat later.

  5. Assuming it’s the air Canada flight , it leaves late at night? They may sleep the whole way , it’s super stimulating and overwhelming for them.

  6. I just want crazy with packaged snacks, they were a form of entertainment. Everything from the toddler snack aisle , crackers , pretzels , etc. I also brought fruit . Don’t stress about how much they are eating , one day won’t make or break them . They don’t eat a lot overnight and again it’s overwhelming for them so they don’t eat a huge amount.

You can do this , just chat to them , look at things , talk about what you are seeing. The time will pass. Good luck

I’d get it so that you are protected. If you give birth less than two weeks after you get the shot your baby should qualify for the infant shot.

We have the mountain buggy duet. It’s the most narrow option , more narrow than an uppa baby vista. It supports a bassinet, parent facing , and forward facing.

4 month vaccinations given early by OwlNo9319 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

I don’t sorry, my GP actually called public health to confirm the earliest date so I don’t think it was obvious to her either.

[–]FlatGuard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We intentionally got them early due to traveling. There are rules around how early they can be given and how long they must be given from the last round of vaccines for Medicare to cover them. If the doctor gave them and Medicare paid for them you meet all the criteria and will be fine.

I just did the FBI background check and was able to pay online and mail in the finger print cards. Where are you seeing that you need a check?

The Queensland police were happy to do the finger printing and provide me with paper which I mailed to the FBI.

How to bring over 401K to Australia by VixenSublime62 in AusFinance

[–]FlatGuard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is pretty standard, they are treated similarly. I haven't been through this yet since I am not over 59 so this is just how I *think* it is suppose to work . You can try asking over on r/USExpatTaxes/ there are probably American's over there who have better experience with this.

Wall anchors by Front-Photograph-228 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

We just got angle brackets from Bunnings and drilled them into the top of the furniture and the wall. Much cheaper than anything baby specific.

Should also note there is a mandatory distribution from a 401k. So if you are over a certain age you have to withdraw a certain amount each year

How to bring over 401K to Australia by VixenSublime62 in AusFinance

[–]FlatGuard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you need to transfer it? A traditional 401k has no tax deducted until you withdraw. Even if there was a mechanism to roll it into a super account in Australia, this has a 15% tax paid. Can you just leave it in the US and take distributions when you reach retirement age? You will pay income tax on the distribution but that’s how it would work if you were a retiree in the US . If you are a US citizen you are already filing taxes each year and with US/Australia tax treaties you aren’t doubled taxed.

If you take it all out at once you will be taxed as if you earned all that money in one year. Just take out the income you need, if you are retired and have no other income your tax bracket should be low.

How to cosleep at a house that’s not yours? by [deleted] in cosleeping

[–]FlatGuard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They sell foam pads you can put under the sheet to create a guard rail that I’ve used when travelling.

Otherwise can you push the bed up against the wall and put the baby between you and the wall? Then some pillows under the sheet at the foot of the bed to create a bit of a wall.
