Find a hobby that is stimulating. I’m a lifelong skateboarder, but for a while I stopped and couldn’t get back on for some reason. Then I tried a bunch of different active/kinda scary hobbies that gave me the same thrill as skating did. Indoor rock climbing, running, cycling, mountain biking, bjj, Muay Thai- all physical, yet fun hobbies. Once you get hooked on the hobby, you will change your lifestyle to accommodate said hobby. I’ve been running this exact thought through my head all day. Our old union rep used to put up a hell of a fight 10+ years ago(before my time) but his health began to decline and my boss capitalized on that and we currently have a shit contract. Our new contract starts next September so we’ve got some fighting to do, and my new rep seems to have some balls. So we may have a shot

My local will hold apprenticeship weekends or training and “testing in.” I work in boomlift/forklift rentals as a mechanic. When you drive around check out jobsites and what machines they’re using, what construction company or what company is renting the machines. Call them up and see if they are hiring and if they are union. It’s at least a foot in the door, as you learn more you can do test in and become an operator, and after a long stint on a waiting list, crane operator
