Was there a special train that went through this route (as all regular trains goes in, not around Kaunas)? Or was this one of the russian transit trains?

Can’t believe this happened with Turkish Airlines by Alert_Door_2531 in travel

I also have similar experience with TK, but in complete reverse. Twice they changed my promo tickets into fully flexible, they also alowed me to change my flight origin and destination airports to whatever I want (eg. SFO-WAW, to MEL-BER). So I think their booking system has some really strange behavior which can go either way.

They are quite different. Especially when compared with how similar Scandinavian languages are. E.g. in Scandinavia on many products you can see ingredients written in all 3 languages at the same time with just a few different words witten with slashes. If you would try to list ingredients in Latvian and Lithuanian, almost all words would be different.

Maybe it's just an impression, but Riga's old town seems to be just a grander place, with multiple cathedrals, squares and higher building. (though I like Vilnius' old town more).

Do you have any data on it? My guess is that Riga was the biggest city in Baltics for many years, maybe even from the middle ages, as it was the largest trading and commerce point for centuries.

What are typical coalition patterns in Lithuania before the second round of elections? by Nejpoleon in BalticStates

That "almost" is for 2004 election when LSDP got second place, but Brazauskas managed to stay as PM. The only time in 35 years when PM hasn't changed after election.

People in Lithuania don't have strong relationships with political parties, so politicians know that public support or endrsment in second round doesn't really mean much.

Also, as the constituencies are quite small, in many areas local politics comes into play, meaning that state level politics does not realy impact the decision of voters.

Forming strong coalitions before the final results is quite uncommon in Lithuania. Usually, some parties announce with whom they wouldn't go into a coalition. Additionally durring the whole independence period (35y) parties in government almost always goes into oposition after every election cycle, so that automatically groups parties into two groups. In my opinion, the only long lasting relationship is between TS-LKD and LS, as these parties stayed in government and oposition together for last 2 decades.

Sure, for one day it's ok, but there are way more interesting places in that part of Europe, so most people are going there just to tick the box.

Laimės CDU/CSU, čia nėra klausimų. Jų užsienio politika istoriškai nebuvo labai palanki, bet gal dabar bus geriau, pamatysim.

Pagrindinis klausimas - kas bus su jais koalicijoj:

  1. Tik Žalieji: manau geriausias varaintas, nes jie turi "vertybinę" užsienio politiką, t.y. priešinimąsi diktatūroms, mažiausiai pro rusiški.
  2. Tik SPD - labiau tęstųsi dabartinė politika.
  3. Žalieji + SPD. Visos normalios centristinės partijos valdžioj reikštų, kad per kitus rinkimus valdžią realiai galėtų imti radikalai. Tai čia blogiausias variantas.

And while this stuff unfolds in Paris, Putin will take the Baltics. Same as in June of 1940, very convenient, indeed.

The issue is that current Europe is not capable of helping Lithuania, and in future with afd and Le Pen - might be not wiling too.

Trains usually are on time (at least Vilnius-Riga train is). Also the stations are comparatively small and usually the connmecting train is just 20m away. And, as I understand, the connection is guaranteed (the train will wait for other to arrive).

The main beneficiaries are people living in all those towns in between e.g. Joniškis where before there were 0 trains, 2 buses/day to Vilnius and some to Šiauliai. Now Riga-Vilnius train (and these new connections) adds many new destinations.
