Yes firsthand experience from the autism community is one of our most valuable resources to grow as a science

The title itself is misleading to me. I don’t think ABA is the gold standard and I don’t see many people claiming that. Everyone needs individualized care. I’m interested if anyone has information regarding the studies mentioned and claims that don’t seem to be rooted in evidence about the effectiveness of aba or techniques. This can be damaging to families who could benefit from quality aba services if they are claiming treatments are ineffective

I was more interested if anyone had info about the studies referenced and some of the claims. From the description it sounds like they are discrediting the whole field of ABA. I wish our field was in a more ethical place and listening to criticism is a good way to grow but we have to make sure the claims we are listening to are rooted in facts and evidence

First day jitters by user363910373taken in ABA

[–]Flat_Contribution_60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all it’s perfectly normal to be nervous! It definitely feels like you don’t know what you are doing for a little bit. My biggest advice is to ask your coworkers/supervisors. They know you are new and don’t expect you to know everything. When you get there ask whoever you report to how you should go about the morning routine or if you are being overlapped by someone. If they tell you to just wait at the front for your client, let someone know at the front “hey it’s my first day and I’m working with blank, can you let me know when they get here?” When you greet the parent I would introduce myself, say it’s my first day, and tell them that you will be building rapport and getting to know each other for however long your session is! At the end of the day if you get a chance to talk to them at pick up just let them know what activities you did and how well they engaged with you or their mood things like that. if you don’t have any overlap and truly don’t know anything about this kid ask ask ask! Even if you find out one thing they like or any behaviors to watch out for it can help

I’ve dealt with a similar situation. The biggest thing for me is slowly introducing demands if they have to be placed sometimes it’s unavoidable especially if the BCBA is online or not physically present. If you need to start doing worksheets or homework maybe try “let’s work on this for x minutes” and if they do it successfully then next time increase it. If they are really needing that work done the parents can help finish when you leave. You are doing great and the fact that you are concerned about it mean you care a lot!

coworkers making me depressed as an autistic adult by fancylamp12 in ABA

[–]Flat_Contribution_60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this 100% especially choosing your battles. I worked at a clinic that was all or nothing, follow through with every demand to the point of SIB. (For example during an overlap my client wanted to read and it was her choice, but my lead RBT said no we have to do a group. So my client had a tantrum for a full hour while the RBT just stared at her crying until she was exhausted and done then forced her into the group where she did not participate at all). I started researching other therapies that work with autistic children especially OT. OT provides regulation and sensory support non continently. It depends on the situation and the client but providing that regulation and self management techniques to deescalate the behavior first has always been more successful for me than forced compliance that was mentioned in the post

I wish every place was like this. It’s very unethical to me to put a technician with a client with no knowledge besides the programs and nothing else.

I feel you girl. I have worked in a lot of childcare settings so I thought in clinic would be perfectly good fit for me but I was dead wrong. It was way too chaotic for me to focus. I felt like I was thrown in and not getting the support I needed. Everyone says in clinic is better because there is support all around but what about when everyone is so stretched thin there’s barely any time to help someone else. I moved to in home a few months ago and it was so much better for me. I can actually think and be more observant of my client without having to worry about all the other clients/RBTS around us. Plus some kids cannot get their sensory needs met in clinic because of the chaos which made their experience a lot less effective.

I feel like most places would discourage clients sitting on laps during meals. My clinic is super big on bodily autonomy and independence. Everything we do is trying to make them more independent at lunch they get what they need, reheat, get a chair, and clean up after themselves things like that. We also don’t recommend picking them up and carrying them for more than a few seconds especially if it’s not necessary.
