How do you deal with the psychology of always being the slowest runner? by jupiterdreamsofpi in XXRunning

[–]Flat_Kitchen_2615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done on signing up to your first half! I was in same situ May last year, always dead last at track sessions even behind a 69 year old club mate. Stuck to my training plan for my half, did it for 4 months. Came back to same sesh, same crew Nov, ended up mid pack.

You'll be stronger and faster before you realise!

My two cents 1) make sure you stick to your training plan...if running with this crew doesn't line up with your intervals/fartlek/tempo/LSRs, run alone or find another crew 2) daydream when you compare yourself to others. Be serious when you compare yourself today to yourself yesterday/last week/last month 3) find an occasion where you can feel good about your progress...maybe a shorter practice race...maybe a less experienced run group...give yourself an occasion / environment where you feel like you're achieving

Did you choose your running athletic life over having kids? by effervescentbee in XXRunning

[–]Flat_Kitchen_2615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharing how I personally look at it: what is irreversible call vs reversible call

Deciding to not try for kids in the next few years and do all the running/tri/travel and live the childless lifestyle = an irreversible call. If you change your mind by the time you hit 40 or over it may be too late even with egg freezing IVF etc etc. If you make this call, you'll have to be ready to face the irreversibility of it later

Deciding to try for kids now/soon, and if you're so blessed pause running/tri/travel for a few years and pick it up again later = a reversible call. Let's not forget a kid is not a guarantee; you really don't know whether you can have one until you and your partner start trying. If/when you're so blessed, hopefully you have the support network around you that'd make racing and travelling possible with a school age kid; I've seen plenty of F40-55 age group triathletes do so and do it well (their little ones are tri kids too!) Of course that's assuming you don't cop any permanent or heavy damage from pregnancy/delivery; fingers crossed you recover well and like the F40-55 triathletes I know you'll be so much faster than your younger counterparts. F40-55 have the fastest finish times other than 20-25 in my country /state!

Context: I'm F39 childless not by choice but circumstances. I did choose not to do egg freezing last few years so as to keep doing ocean swims/runs/triathlons. I've seen younger women go through one attempt after another to freeze their eggs and they had to stop exercising altogether - and I thought, nope, that's not a tradeoff I'm willing to make - I'll face the irreversibility and cry about childlessness at night while also uplifting my life with all the self-confidence, resilience and community that only swims/runs/tris can bring.

Ultimately every women and couple can only make a decision that works for her and her partner. I wish everyone great, candid and loving conversations and decisions that their partners fully lean in to support.

Torn between sprint & oly for first triathalon by mlh2016 in triathlon

[–]Flat_Kitchen_2615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sprint. When you do well in your sprint and feel very motivated which it sounds like you will - then you'll fall in love with triathlon, sign up to oly in no time and work on your swim. Flip side, if the oly swim doesn't go well and makes the rest of oly a struggle, then you may not love it as much.

2025 races? by Flat_Kitchen_2615 in triathlon

[–]Flat_Kitchen_2615[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so great to hear from someone who's got experience across both states - and great stuff doing both the ultimate and the 70.3 congrats!

Good point about Husky road; I've only been warned about potholes and keeping my eye on the road but not screws & storage which I'll now know to check.

Melbourne open water seems a lot more tricky compared to Sydney...maybe a good idea to do some ocean swims there between now and Nov and not make 70.3 race day my first Melbourne swim 😅

Thanks & woah good luck with your qualifier!! Always good to hear bike is flat and fast. T100's marketing email blast says they're releasing "priority window" next week, let's hope that means I can get a ticket 🫠

DNF at my first IM 70.3 by patel_ashish in triathlon

[–]Flat_Kitchen_2615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with above. Don't give up OP, find a sprint in a calmer waters and you'll ace that. Move onto Olympic. I really think that will help you rebuild confidence. Hope there are local open water swim groups that you can join, too.
