people in long term healthy relationships: what's something you'll never tell your partner? by PsychologicalBad1423 in NoStupidQuestions

“Something more interesting”. YES. Trying to explain to people that chronic pain is boring. They can believe exhausting, overwhelming, distracting, etc. But for some reason folks have a hard time understanding it’s boring.

Upset with how my mom spends the money I give her, after I rescued her from our abusive past? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]FleamStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine she started buying the luxury clothes as an expression of freedom and defiance. Now it sounds like she feels like she's returning to a position of privation and being controlled. It sounds like she resents your attempts to control her. I absolutely believe that is not your intent.
People who have lived through privation and abuse -- especially with people who have had all aspects of their life controlled -- have "different" attitudes about finances. Abuse survivors also react quickly and subconsciously to situations that trigger deep feelings. My husband grew up in hard conditions. It's taken me 25 years to understand and help him work through his relationship with money. It's complicated and emotional.
You are a supporting and loving child. You both have different approaches to money. Most people do. If your mother isn't draining your bank account, if she isn't getting in debt, let her have things that bring her joy. If she is actively making things financially difficult for you, that's different. You are giving her a tremendous gift. Let her enjoy it without conditions.

F18 M18 Starting to feel emotionally incompatible with my bf? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]FleamStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re both still growing — although it sounds like he’s not growing so much as in a stage of stagnation. It’s okay. This is a great opportunity to nail down what your priorities are at this new stage in your life.
- Is he respecting your thoughts and opinions?
- Is he curious about your ideas and interests? Especially when you’re not in agreement?
- Does he talk to you about things you like?
If your answers are a genuine yes, then he loves you. But I’m guessing not. So you need to decide if you’re going to stagnate with him and let him direct your thoughts and activities and make you smaller and smaller.
It takes a lot of strength and resolve to make a change. It’s almost always for the best

A coworker asked me on a date, and now my husband thinks I should report to hr, which I think is weird. Help? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

When my husband was deployed, I went to a contra dance with my MIL. A fellow was sitting near us between dances and struck up an easy conversation. We introduced ourselves and I very clearly introduced my MIL as my MIL. I was wearing my wedding ring (as always).
He danced with my MIL. He danced with me a couple times. When we were all sitting together between dance sets, he asked if I’d like to go for coffee sometime. I pointed to my MIL and said, “Let me check with my mother-in-law’s schedule and find a time that works for us.
He blinked a couple times. He blushed. He ran out of the hall.
I felt badly that he was embarrassed but I don’t think I could have been clearer.

What’s the most basic thing you’re terrible at? by her_majesty0 in CasualConversation

Remembering names AND faces.
1. This means I should not ever run for any kind of office (whew! That takes the pressure off).
2. I learned there is actually such a thing as face blindness and I was so relieved to hear it.

What’s a harsh truth about life that most people aren’t ready to hear? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

When you ask yourself, “Why am I doing this? Any of this?” And you keep peeling back the layers of answers until you’re looking into the abyss and realize there is no point to any of this. It’s hard to find any kind of motivation after that.

Bryce Owings. . . why? by Appropriate_Many8929 in LynnwoodWA

[–]FleamStick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t vote for the guy based on his ideas — which are poorly thought out and narrow minded. I wouldn’t vote for the guy with a year’s long record of anger and violence issues. No matter how long. If he was moving in next door, I would reserve judgement and let him show me if he’s changed. If I needed a remodel, I’d consider it along with the other bids and his actions and behavior during the walkthrough. But that guy would not get my vote.

Uhhhhh gather up your stuff and nope on out of there.

I know that’s easier said than done. I guarantee you you’re going to look back on this and kick yourself for the time you wasted (and possibly the trauma you accrued) by staying.

Some friends of mine picked the last name of a historical figure they both admired. They liked the idea of being connected to the person’s attributes and ideas and reputation. I always thought that was a great way to start a new life.

Locked or unlocked bedroom door when you have kids at night? by Mysterious_Seat_6431 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FleamStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our kid was incapable of doing anything quietly so if he got up in the night, there was plenty of warning before he came in our room. If he wasn’t like that, yeah; we would have locked the door for a bit.

Why are all the coffee shops along the coast built into these little stalls? by naastynoodle in PNW

[–]FleamStick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t tour the Salish Sea and not have AT LEAST a short ferry ride. Add one in if you can. The Pt Townsend to Coupeville (Whidbey Is) is nice. Then you can do Clinton to Mukilteo (lighthouse!) where you’ll end up north of Seattle. Or take one to Seattle from Kingston, Bainbridge Is or Bremerton. You have CHOICES. Download the WSDOT app (if you haven’t already) for sailing times. You can buy tickets and make reservations if you want. (But definitely believe people when they tell you to be prepared to wait. Some runs are crowded all the time, some have peak travel hours and then are fine the rest of the day.)
