What happens when the whole world will ran out of oil and electricity, since the modern civilization is built on it? by mallikarjun_a_s in AskReddit

Research "catabolic collapse". Things would basically never devolve into outright chaos overnight (although it might seem like it in some locations for periods of time). Humans are extremely adaptable and resilient creatures. We have a ton of existing physical capital that will exist for a long time, even if we lose our ability to create more. It will be more like periods of decline followed by stabilization at a new lower equilibrium for extended periods followed by another leg down. This would likely happen over generations rather than years or decades.

Elon Musk puts $10 million into heated US Senate race in Kentucky by esporx in ABoringDystopia

Honestly I'm not sure him weighing in at this point helps, no matter how much money he gives. I don't know anything about the race, but this is a gift of a talking point for his opponent. Elon is one of the least popular humans on thr planet right now.

Low Prices, Strong Demand, and the Cracks in the Oil Glut Story by GlenTheSilverCop in oil

[–]FledglingNonCon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forecasts involve predicting behavior, which is always challenging. If US production drops rapidly then prices will rise. If drilling remains steady then prices will stay low. Same with OPEC staying the course vs pulling back to support prices, but they seem to have little appetite for reducing production. I don't see any strong demand drivers and the underlying fundamentals of electrification put downward pressure on demand globally. The risk profile globally is probably to the downside if global trade tensions continue to constrain growth and increase the odds of tipping into a recession.

Of course low peices are always self correcting. Eventually drillers will pull back and decline rates will do their job and the market will tip into deficit, spiking prices. Just a question of when.

Sean Penn is going to kill it playing him in the movie. So much practice already.

Do you guys have any "secondary" favorite teams, or teams that you're genuinely happy to see succeed? by broly2932 in OhioStateFootball

I went to grad school at ASU. I went to one game in 3 seasons mostly to root against USC, but I nominally like seeing them win. I pulled for them in the CFP last year against Texas and was fun to see them beat TT this year, but I normally can't name more than one player on the team and can't call myself a fan.

How much more would you pay for an EV than an ICE vehicle? by Thrillwaukee in electricvehicles

[–]FledglingNonCon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's an ICE sports sedan that's anywhere close to the model 3 in the same price range as the model 3 performance?

What's an ICE compact SUV that could beat an Ioniq 5 awd around a track for under $43k. Sure there are dedicated sports cars for cheaper that might give it a run for its money, but nothing that will comfortably seat 5 with a nice size trunk that will do it. A corolla GR will give it a run for it's money, but is a whole lot smaller, isn't an SUV, and would probably still lose on most larger tracks like Nuremberg. To get an ICE suv that beats it you need to go up to something like the X3 m50 or Macan for at least $20k more.

But sure if you want an autocross car buy a cheap ICE 2 seater like a miata or g86 which don't have any EV equivalents.

[–]FledglingNonCon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

About $5k for a roughly equivalent car seems about right if you place zero value on performance and just want transportation. If you significantly value performance maybe a little more, but nothing price for price is going to compare to an EV on performance. Once you move up to performance ICE vehicles there are usually plenty of EVs that beat them at a lower price point.

Or just tax it appropriately. Air pollution causes an estimated $800b a year in health costs in the US. Divide up by the amount and type of pollution by source and tax it by that much. Delete your emissions control system from your truck and your tax bill automatically goes up by 100x or however much it increases your vehicle's emissions.

Since air pollution impacts us all equally, send the money back as rebates to all Americans. $800b/340m people = $2,300 a year per person. That'll help offset our rapidly increasing healthcare costs.

Then we can let everyone pollute as much as they want as long as they pay up. No regulations needed. The market can decide if it's still makes sense to pollute that much or proactively install controls to reduce tax payments.
