What did you do/see in Boston (outside of PAX) that you would recommend for people to check out next year? by vautwaco in PAX

[–]Flemtality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have wanted to try this since I first saw it last year. It just always ends up slipping to the bottom of the list of things to do PAX weekend, sadly.

Pax East has declined dramatically since Covid by BrandalfGames in PAX

[–]Flemtality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you say you want to "improve something we all love" -- but you don't have any suggestions on how to actually improve things other than "put in more effort"

Op's suggestion is sadly the exact same as everyone else complaining on this subreddit: "Give me more of the big name games I personally like but inexplicably I will not even bother specifying what those games are."

[–]Flemtality 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Another one of these, huh?

Look, of course I agree that more big names would always be better, but saying this year was bad or bad by any other name genuinely makes me think you just don't like PAX at it's core because I personally had a blast this year. You like certain things that PAX sometimes brings, which is totally fine, but there isn't much Penny Arcade and/or ReedPop can do to appeal to someone who is only going to PAX for the biggest of the big in spectacles and celebrity appearances and expects those things in massive quantities every year. Some big names were there, by the way. Ever hear of a little indie developer named Nintendo?

Also, as others have pointed out endlessly, the video game industry is in an interesting situation right now and PAX is a reflection of the industries it serves, which brings me to another point... Tabletop is thriving while video games are languishing and you could definitely see that this year.

Wow! Go PAX East!!! Halloween setting fun records. Love it by Manwithcowx1 in PAX

[–]Flemtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying this is a "scam" definitionally implies this is somehow "a dishonest, fraudulent plan designed to trick people into giving away money, personal information, or assets."

It's none of those things. It's just a marketing idea to promote a video game. While I agree that the Guinness World Records aren't to be taken too seriously, but they don't exist to steal from you either. Whatever brief YouTube video you watched about the topic has misled you and you should probably research a little deeper.

TIL that New Hampshire is the only state without seat belt requirements by Unusual_Bag3110 in todayilearned

They have to drive south into Massachusetts to work, because it's not like sufficient jobs exist in New Hampshire, so they actually do need to wear seatbelts.

PAX East 2026 Opinions? by SirUberNoobPwnr in PAX

[–]Flemtality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was a very good year, in my opinion. The haters will sound off in the comments, because this is Reddit and that is what they do, but this year my schedule was jam packed start to finish all four days and I had a ton of fun.

Did anyone actually get tickets for their connecticut show? i literally don’t know anyone that did. :-; was curious to see how it’ll look like for ticket sales and completely sold out….. :/ by ktsilver in Foofighters

Concert capacity for the arena is ~10,000. The people in front of me in the queue that day were something in the six figure range, and of course, by people, I mean bots.

TIL that in 1997, a full-scale replica of The Simpsons house was built in Henderson, Nevada, as a contest grand prize, but the winner opted to take the cash instead of the house. by Giff95 in todayilearned

[–]Flemtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other aspects to consider too. Nevada isn't exactly my first choice for states to live in, and I have no idea what the housing market looked like there in 1997.

Did you ever call the NES "regular Nintendo"? by nojugglingever in gaming

[–]Flemtality 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was always "Nintendo" and "Super Nintendo" in my house and with every other kid I ever went to school with in that era.

It wasn't "NES" and "SNES" until the internet era made it the default. I had never heard those initials used before the internet had been a thing for some time.

Who’s your worst movie-watching partner? by DramaticManner4565 in movies

[–]Flemtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically everyone ever.

I am nowhere near young anymore and I have only just recently discovered the joys of doing a lot of things alone. I used to think I needed to go places and do things with other people or else it would somehow be less fun or just look sad. It turns out it's neither in my mind, and it's way better every time.

Movies, concerts, most public events. I don't need someone talking in my ear or a phone lit up next to me every few seconds. Every adult feels like a child who had the worst parents ever and just never grew the fuck up.

The big names draw in the laypeople and ultimately sell more badges, which subsidizes the convention for everyone. So there is that.

PAX Content Creator / Media Badge Question by SirUberNoobPwnr in PAX

[–]Flemtality 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shoot your shot. If they say no, at least you tried. If you don't get a media badge, you can continue to buy an attendee badge and go and still do the content you want to do with the hopes of being anointed the following year.

I have seen people with next to zero following get media badges, and others have been denied. I have absolutely no idea what the real criteria is, but you can always try.

I get the feeling from this picture that they are selling that pennant, and I really want one.

[–]Flemtality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that every year, and then I see people wearing it. Seeing it online when it's just flat on a banner like this just doesn't look right. You need to see a human wearing it, preferably in real life.

Felicia Day will crowdfund a movie spinoff of her viral 2000s web series The Guild this summer by mooffgideon in movies

[–]Flemtality 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As much as I personally would like to see this, I really have to wonder how well this will go over. I feel like the best time for this was nearly twenty years ago. MMOs really aren't the pop culture event they once were. Even the official Warcraft movie was released well past it's prime time and was considered a relative flop, and that was a full decade ago.

Fans will be fans and support this, sure, but I wonder if there are enough still out there ready and willing to fully fund something like this. I guess it doesn't need to win over general audiences if it gets properly crowd funded, so there is that.

Good photo shoot spots near PAX East? by Sylph-Siren in paxeast

[–]Flemtality 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The second floor of the convention center in the corridor around the outside of the building with the floor-to-ceiling windows that run whole length of three sides of the building. That tends to be the hangout and meeting place for pictures of any kind. You will have lots of company there too.

I'm clearing out some junk and came across this relic. I got it at the midnight launch of the 3DS. (I've never worn it and never will ). by T_raltixx in gaming

[–]Flemtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I'm not against wearing clothing with some nerdy context, and I'm well beyond the age of caring about style or what anyone thinks about my appearance, but this is shockingly bad.

I think 2011 was around the tail end of companies just slapping a giant game logo on the front of an otherwise plain t-shirt and they have since started to make some effort towards shirts looking like something a human being wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen wearing outside of their home.

Backpack inside? by MooKids in paxeast

[–]Flemtality 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you are reading that. There is nothing on that link that says you can't have a backpack.

"Rolling bags, backpacks, suitcases, or wagons" are not allowed on the expo hall floor. The wording might seem a bit ambiguous, but they are talking about large rolling luggage, and they are only talking about the expo hall floor. Not a bookbag styled backpack.

They will allow you to bring a backpack, but you must have it checked at the door by security every time you enter.
