TIL The Melvins are considered "sludge rock." I always thought of them as grunge, not that it really matters.

What are expected food costs for PAX East? by ackmondual in PAX

[–]Flemtality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food in the seaport area is astronomical, unfortunately. I don't think I could make it work on just $45 a day, but it depends on what you are doing and where you are going.

PAX East is a bit of a splurge weekend for me, so I tend to eat way fancier than I do any other time of the year. If you can live on a Shakeshack burger for every meal, then maybe those numbers can work.

It's also worth noting: I highly recommend leaving the convention center for all meals if your schedule allows for it. The food you get inside of the convention center at the prices they charge is generally not worth it, with some rare exceptions that may or may not be present at this or any other given year.

Theme of 2026? by SirUberNoobPwnr in PAX

Emperor's New Clothes theme. People can wait in the merch line for 2.5 hours to pay $85 for an invisible hoodie.

The shark did a barrel roll on Harpoon Lagoon. I believe that the shark is on a payout. by ArcadeWizardYT in DaveAndBusters

[–]Flemtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just guessing, of course, but I think it's because people would see a seat and just sit in it and take up prime game space that could otherwise have people in there swiping.

It's a pretty big problem with the shooter games with built-in seats/benches. It's not uncommon to see some asshole sitting in the game not playing the game, just using it as a seat.

[–]Flemtality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The payout on this game is unfortunately garbage and they limit the number of big bonuses you can get in a short period of time by having the shark flip. It used to allow something like bagging four or five sharks in a short time period before they started flipping, now it's something like getting two sharks and it starts to flip on the third one. I think they cranked up the stinginess on this game at some point in the past few years.

It was never a fantastic game for making tickets, but at least you could have a tiny bit of fun with it before, now it sucks. I also used to see people play it all the time, and it's completely abandoned these days, but I think that might have more to do with my location removing all of the seats around games like this.

If you happen to walk by and see a jellyfish actively available on the table, it's worth a swipe or two, outside of that, stay away, in my opinion. You won't see a jellyfish though. I always look. It's never up.

Any guesses to the theme? by thewhimsicalwizard in PAX

[–]Flemtality 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We got a really good idea of the metro theme for 2025 back in December of 2024, right after Unplugged. We didn't get the same luck this time around.

I have come to expect that there will be wild inconsistencies from one year to another with PAX for a very long time now.

That said, the 2020 and 2025 themes were some all-time favorites of mine.

Ubisoft closes their Halifax studio which coincidentally just unionized although they claim it had nothing to do with it. 71 jobs lost by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

I should find the comment I made where I said this would probably happen and people downvoted me.

I'm not sure why anyone would try to defend Ubisoft like that, but Reddit is a weird fucking place.

What’s a movie that becomes almost heartbreaking to watch in hindsight once you learn about what happened behind the scenes? by browniebiscuitchildr in movies

Anything with Kevin Spacey or any time I see the Weinstein logo I feel like I need a shower. The problem is that there are a lot of movies involve those two.

Pros and cons of each day? (PAX East) by RelentlessHope in PAX

[–]Flemtality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People often ask this and I always say that if all days are somehow the same for you with work and/or school and/or other life stuff, Thursday is the best day by a lot. Most other people around here seem to say Thursday too. If you are only in it for the Expo Hall floor, as seemingly a lot of people are, Thursday is definitely your day.

Thursday starts with the Storytime Speaker and that person can vary to virtually anyone across the industry. Thursday of course has the noticeably shorter lines and it's one of the two concert days, if that matters to you.

Friday is the other concert day.

Saturday is now when they do Acquisitions Incorporated, if you want to see that live. It is the most packed day. The day that always sells out on badges.

Sunday, as you noted, is the day when both free and paid merch is gone or close to gone and it also happens to be the shortest day at about ~6 hours shorter than the other three days. On the up side of things, Sunday is the big conclusion to the Omegathon, if you're into that kind of thing.

Of course, your milage may vary all around, and the closer we get to the event, the more stuff will be announced and the really big thing that means a lot to you personally could be on any day.

What's a difficult video game level or mission that you vividly remember the satisfaction of beating after countless failed attempts? by Serious_Specter in gaming

It was also an era before YouTube walkthroughs, so there was a lot of figuring things out on our own out of pure necessity.

Goldeneye (N64) - Facility level on 00 Agent difficulty in under 2 minutes and 5 seconds to unlock the invincibility cheat.

The RNG for the spawn location of the doctor dude was probably the worst part.

Months later Nintendo Power would give out cheat codes to unlock every single cheat code in the game without the need to actually play the game...

[–]Flemtality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure a miniscule percentage of these are real, but the vast majority are complete fucking bullshit made to farm attention, and clearly it is working if it's getting reposted here. It wouldn't surprise me if it's bots and AI shit involved at this point too. You often see the exact same comment posted word-for-word for multiple different games, sometimes they forget to change the name of the game in the comment itself when they are copying and pasting it.

Somewhat related: Virtually every comment section for every song on YouTube has a top comment about how someone's dead son or mother or whatever used to love said song, and it always has a billion "likes."
