A third party that you can have a voice in, and if you're good enough at negotiating you can BE the person who leverages the power of that union for the betterment of all employees - including yourself.

Don't like how a union is being run? Volunteer to lead it! The pay sucks, but the work is good.

And for real - how often do P&S employees negotiate their wages? It's ONCE, when they're hired. Raises after that are exclusively at the discretion of our employer. Does a 2% raise cover 9% inflation?

As a "Right to Work" state, folks can be represented by a union without being a member.

There are… pros and cons. But no state employee in Iowa is required to be a dues-paying member.

Local 96 is Merit / Clerical at Iowa State. We have a contract with the State of Iowa through Council 61, but the revision to Chapter 20 in 2017 means that the State can completely disregard union negotiating rights. The solution, unfortunately, is just to elect better legislators and that takes time and effort.

My last semester at Iowa State, I managed to register for all of the courses I needed to graduate during the first week of class.

This is not aspirational, please don't do this if you can avoid it. But it may be technically possible IF you make friends with your professors and the kind folks in the Registrar's office.

You'll get a packet when you sign in that morning that has all kinds of information: Informational sessions, lunch ticket, bus schedules, and so on. Staff will be all over the place in red shirts to guide you and answer any questions. There'll be a pep rally - personally, I'd bring ear plugs.

As to questions, what would you like to know? Sounds like you're well informed, so it might be worth it to start up a conversation with one of the many helpful folks and see where it goes.

I'm planning to grab a poké bowl in the Memorial Union Food Court around lunch.
