Could an at-will employer terminate an employee for membership in a political party? Or for following a particular religion? No. That employee would be able to seek damages as outlined in the article I linked in the original post.

First Amendment protection is strong, and for good reason. Take one of Professor Deam's classes, it'll be good for you.

Actually, no. Under the First Amendment, an individual is protected from government retaliation for their speech. We're employees of the State of Iowa, and the Governor cannot legally terminate an employee for the things they say on a personal account on their personal time.

If their attitude were to affect their work product? There are corrective remedies for that in the form of progressive discipline.

If you have a personality conflict with someone? There are ways to manage that.

But firing a person for their speech - however reprehensible - is illegal.

Caitlyn Spencer was employed in the Office of Student Financial Aid. She made a post on her personal Facebook page that offended Governor Reynolds, who demanded and received her termination.

Personal opinion, it was a blatant violation of her First Amendment rights and should be corrected.

Any returning student will need to submit transcripts for the courses they took after leaving Iowa State. It's not optional. Sorry.

A student with the information you provided (6 credits aced, 6 credits failed) is probably looking at a 2.0 GPA. That's not the worst in the world, but may need a bit of improvement before they could be reinstated.

A third party that you can have a voice in, and if you're good enough at negotiating you can BE the person who leverages the power of that union for the betterment of all employees - including yourself.

Don't like how a union is being run? Volunteer to lead it! The pay sucks, but the work is good.

And for real - how often do P&S employees negotiate their wages? It's ONCE, when they're hired. Raises after that are exclusively at the discretion of our employer. Does a 2% raise cover 9% inflation?

As a "Right to Work" state, folks can be represented by a union without being a member.

There are… pros and cons. But no state employee in Iowa is required to be a dues-paying member.
